Dolores

Hello! I have recently become smitten with the name [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], but I’m not sure about her actual usability. What are your thoughts on the name [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], nn [name_f]Dolly[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f][name_f][/name_f]?

[name_f][/name_f]

Is she too out of fashion? Did [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] Umbridge ruin the name? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f]? Other nicknames & sibling suggestions?

[name_f][/name_f]

Thank you!

I like the name. Possible nickname, [name_f]Lorey[/name_f].

I’ve been seeing [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] in a new light lately! Such a cool name!

[name_f][/name_f]

It does read as religious to me. Not sure if that’s good or bad for you. But I like the way the sounds roll and the plethora of nicknames available. [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] [name_m]Allen[/name_m] White and [name_f]Addison[/name_f] Timlin have a daughter named [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] [name_m]Wild[/name_m] which I think is gorgeous.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Lola[/name_f] and [name_m]Louie[/name_m]. Not the biggest fan of [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] (I like it as an at home nickname but not really as “I’m [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] but I go by Dolly”)

Personally [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] isn’t my favorite. But I absolutely love [name_f]Lola[/name_f]! And if I were to meet a little [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] I think I qould be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you! [name_f]Lorey[/name_f] is cute!

[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] [name_m]Wild[/name_m] is such a cool name! Thanks for the insight!

[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] is definitely starting to move away from the Umbridge association for me but I do think that would be quite a strong association for many people still. I like the sound of [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] and I like the nickname potential (Dora, [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], Lola). I am however a little put off by the meaning.

I think it could work! Especially with it’s familiar nicknames! I don’t associate it too heavily with HP, probably because she was mostly ‘Umbridge’ in that and no one has been choosing it as a HP name (compared to say, Hermione or Luna) ?

I like Lola best as a nickname - but I also lovvvve nn Dessie! Dora, Dodie, Rory, Lori, Lore as other ones?

Edit: for sibs, I’m thinking…

Marisol (Sol, Maris, Molly, Maisie)
Pamela (Mela, Pammie, Pip, Pippa, Pasha, Ela)
Geneva (Ginny, Eva, Neve)
Roberta (Birdie, Betty, Ro, Robyn)
Marcella (Marcy, Mallie, Marley)
Gwendolyn (Gwen, Dolly (if you don’t use it for Dolores), Gwenna, Wendy)
Antonia (Nia, Ana, Annie)
Susannah (Sunny, Susy, Suki, Annie, Sanna)
Monica (Mica, Minnie, Mia Mimi)

It’s not my personal favorite but [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f] are cute! I prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f] only because i think I have a bias against [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] due to a very annoying peer. I like the suggestion of [name_f]Lorey[/name_f] as well. [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_f]Dodie[/name_f], [name_m]Rory[/name_m], or [name_f]Delly[/name_f] may be options for a nickname as well

[name_f][/name_f]

I think kids nowadays would probably associate a [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] more with Encanto than Umbridge which to me a real step forward for the name

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Sib[/name_f] suggestions:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Nancy[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Irene[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Odette[/name_f]

Personally I find her super old fashioned. Victorian kind’ve outdated. (although theoretically that means she should be back in style). As soon as I hear ‘Dolores’ I think Umbridge and evil. But I do think it could work in hispanic communities.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] are cute though.

I think Dolores is really nice! The babysitter I had as a child was a lovely Mennonite woman who had a daughter named Dolores (they spelled it differently though). I think Della or Lola are charming nicknames for her. Dolly is fun too! I would love Dolores to come back into style, I think she makes a great name. I think Dolores Charlotte in particular is lovely. I’ve also worked with a couple Doloreses now that I’m grown up and every time I see it it makes me smile. I’ve never been into HP so I can’t really comment on the Umbridge connection.

The Dolores I knew had a brother named Delb3rt, so that’s my first thought, but I like the idea of something that feels maybe a little Latinate and/or Catholic?

Peter
Nathaniel
Augustine
Maximilian
Florian
Boniface
Ignatius/Ignacio
Alban (not sure if Alban is a saint in Catholicism too, but I do think Dolores and Alban are great together!)

And for girls, something long with lots of nn options, like:

Cecilia
Evangeline
Liliana
Lydia
Philomena
Juliet or Juliana
Clementine
Aurelia

I’m a big Lola fan, so I do prefer Lola to Dolly.

Good luck!

It has recently made it’s way onto my list…I love it!
[name_f][/name_f]I love both [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] …other options [name_f]Dory[/name_f] or Rory…
[name_f][/name_f]I love her with [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] or [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] and (Birdie and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] so sweet) [name_f]Francine[/name_f] (Frankie and Lola) Magdelena (Magda and Dolly) [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] (Glory and Lola), [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] (Plum and Dolly)

She does feel a bit old school but in that charming way where I would be delighted to meet a toddler with the name and it would fit well enough with current/upcoming vintage revival names that it wouldn’t cause her issues with her peers.

[name_f][/name_f]

The [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association is extremely strong for me and has completely turned me personally off the name but I’m pretty sure that’s just a me problem and not an everybody problem. If I met more people called [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] out in the wild or made other pop culture connections to the name I would probably get over it.

[name_f][/name_f]

I prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. Other ideas: [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Dori[/name_f], [name_f]Lora[/name_f], [name_f]Lori[/name_f], [name_m]Dez[/name_m], DeeDee.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] and…
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Wilbur[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Robert[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Conrad[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Nadine[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] and think she’s underrated. For some people the HP association might be there, but there’s also Westworld to balance it out. Not to mention all the real life people named [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]. I don’t think of it as a single person name with one overwhelming association. For nicknames, I haven’t seen anyone add [name_f]Lolo[/name_f] or just [name_f]Lo[/name_f] to the list, which could be cute.
