Don't hate

So…
My husband & I really like surnames on girls, ones that could easily work for a boy, but would really be stretching it for a girl.

Anyways, some of my favorites are below…thoughts?

[name_m]Palmer[/name_m]
[name_u]Chandler[/name_u]
[name_u]Landry[/name_u]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_m]Lennox[/name_m]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_u]Hartley[/name_u]
[name_u]Collins[/name_u]
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u]

Any others out there like me with good ones to add?
Would any of you consider these for your girl?

I like [name_u]Collins[/name_u] quite a bit, it is on my list you could say; also would like hearing [name_u]Landry[/name_u] on a girl but wouldn’t use it myself

I like [name_u]SPencer[/name_u] for a girl and a boy

I think these would work best for a girl…

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u]
[name_u]Landry[/name_u]
[name_m]Lennox[/name_m]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]

All of those names have “feminine” connotations. [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] sounds like [name_f]Alice[/name_f]; [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] sounds like [name_f]Holly[/name_f]; [name_u]Landry[/name_u] and [name_m]Lennox[/name_m] are surnames of famous women ([name_u]Ali[/name_u] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f]); and [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], well…[name_u]Spencer[/name_u] just works on a girl too! The other names sound too masculine for me or have masculine connotations (e.g. [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] from Friends; and Mr [name_u]Collins[/name_u] is a character from Pride & Prejudice, which instantly makes me think ‘male’).

Favorites on your list would be: [name_u]Chandler[/name_u], [name_u]Landry[/name_u], [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and [name_u]Collins[/name_u].

Least: [name_m]Lennox[/name_m], [name_u]Hollis[/name_u].

[name_u]Channing[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_m]Sayer[/name_m]
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]
[name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_u]Brinsley[/name_u]
[name_u]Marley[/name_u]
[name_u]Gray[/name_u]

From your list I really only like [name_m]Lennox[/name_m] or [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] for a girl. I could see [name_u]Hartley[/name_u] on a girl, but I don’t like it, reminds me of [name_u]Harley[/name_u]. The others I think are pretty far into boy only territory.

You might also like:
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]/[name_u]Austen[/name_u]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]
[name_u]Payton[/name_u]/[name_u]Peyton[/name_u]
[name_u]Presley[/name_u]
[name_u]Marley[/name_u]
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_m]Tanner[/name_m]
[name_u]Langley[/name_u]

My favorites are [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] (which is particularly wearable for a girl I think, since it sounds a bit like a cross between [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]). [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] is OK. I’ve heard [name_u]Landry[/name_u] for a girl before but it just sounds like laundry to me.

I like [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], [name_m]Lennox[/name_m], [name_u]Hartley[/name_u], and [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] best. I think [name_m]Lennox[/name_m] is actually my favorite. It reminds me of the character from “the [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden”.

Others: [name_u]Sutton[/name_u], [name_u]Vega[/name_u], [name_m]Brooks[/name_m], Carrigan, [name_m]Callaway[/name_m], [name_u]Easton[/name_u], [name_u]Gray[/name_u], [name_u]Holland[/name_u], Lexington, [name_f]Marin[/name_f], McKay, [name_m]Rivers[/name_m], [name_u]Sinclair[/name_u]

I quite like [name_u]Landry[/name_u] for a girl. I wouldn’t use it because if I was blessed with a girl I would use something frilly but [name_u]Landry[/name_u] it’s nice

Palmer, Chandler, Landry - Fine, NMS. Landry fits better on a girl than the others IMO, I think Palmer and Chandler work better on a boy, but they’re uncommon enough I think any of them COULD be used for a girl without major issues.
Ellis - This is one of those names I like to think of as totally unisex! I like it.
Lennox - I like the idea of this on a girl with nn Lennie/Lenny, actually!
Spencer - I prefer this on a boy, but it’s not awful on a girl.
Hartley - Could work on a girl. Not popular or known enough to be strongly gendered.
Collins - Too close to Collin to work as a girl’s name, IMO.
Hollis - Erk, I like this for a boy! But I do think it’s usable on a girl, I suppose.

Great suggestions! I like [name_f]Marin[/name_f], [name_u]Holland[/name_u] & [name_u]Sutton[/name_u]!

I think [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], [name_u]Collins[/name_u], [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] could all work for a girl.

I could get behind [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] for a girl. The rest are either all boy to me or just shouldn’t be used as first names. Since [name_u]Seth[/name_u] and [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] are one syllable, why not consider a one syllable name for your daughter as well? Instead of [name_u]Hartley[/name_u], what about [name_m]Hart[/name_m]? I also like [name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_u]Grey[/name_u], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], [name_u]Brett[/name_u], and [name_u]Kit[/name_u] for you.

Without divulging it’s incredibly sexist and oppressing to give your daughter a predominantly masculine name. Please, please don’t.

*although [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me… the ‘‘Chandlers a girl! Chandlers a girl!’’ Friends reference makes it SO COOL but yeah, I absoluuutely wouldn’t.

I love unisex names! I’m glad I’m not the only one. My absolute favorite is [name_m]Palmer[/name_m] for a girl. I saw [name_m]Just[/name_m] go with it (jennifer anniston and adam sandler) and I thought [name_m]Palmer[/name_m] seemed very feminine and different in that movie. My other favorites are [name_u]Collins[/name_u], [name_m]Lennox[/name_m], [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], [name_u]Sutton[/name_u], [name_u]Finley[/name_u], [name_u]Emery[/name_u], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], and [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u].

I find it very very sad that someone has to start a thread on nameberry with “[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t hate…” You would think that people would see how sad that is, but I was sure SOMEONE would be disrespectful and there you are. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know what tolerance means? Everyday there are hundreths of names discussed on this website that I don’t really like. But as long as we’re not talking about [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f] or [name_m]Dresden[/name_m], I don’t care. It is not my business, everyone has their own taste, many people like frilly, “cute, darling” names for girls, not what I look for in a name, but to each their own. I comment based on what they are looking for. And sexist, excuse me? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know their reasons to chose these names? Maybe it’s just because they like the sounds of them. I find it kind of sexist to look for a “cute, darling, beautiful” name for a daughter and for a “cool, strong” name for a boy. What you know what? Not my business.
You are even begging the OP to not chose one of those names. Does it affect you personally? Are you personally hurt by what they name their daughter? There are many people who love “boyish” names, there are many people who have those names and like them. As long as their not offensive or extremely ridiculous (and this trend is waaaay too popular to compare it to ridiculous names that will make the kid suffer, way too normal). TOLERANCE people.

Of you list [name_m]Lennox[/name_m], [name_u]Hartley[/name_u], [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] and [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] are the best. I second [name_f]Marin[/name_f]/[name_f]Maren[/name_f].

My suggestions for you…

[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]Ellery[/name_u]
[name_f]Bronwen[/name_f]/[name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Everly[/name_u]
[name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]
[name_u]Larkin[/name_u]
[name_f]Bryony[/name_f]
[name_u]Teagan[/name_u]

[name_m]Just[/name_m] because someone doesn’t agree with a post doesn’t mean they’re being hateful.

I know a [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], if it helps. No-one bats an eye at her name. She is a strong, athletic girl who has overcome a great deal in her young life. A strong feminine name, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

I have known little girls named [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], [name_u]Hartley[/name_u], [name_m]Lennox[/name_m], [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_m]Berkeley[/name_m], [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_f]Grier[/name_f], and [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]. I used to work in child care and came across lots of interesting names. Though I was surprised to meet little girls with some of these names, it was neat to see how well they fit their personalities, despite being traditionally male/surname names.
