Double-Barrel Name w/w/o hyphen? Is saying the WHOLE name all of the time normal or weird?

We love [name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] as a FULL first name. Is it necessary to use a hyphen to clarify that it’s all one name? What looks better “Summer-Faith” or “Summer Faith”? Is saying the full name all the time too much, does it sound strange and too official? [name_u]Or[/name_u] is it giving a cool and unique vibe to constantly say “Summer Faith”?

[name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] is gorgeous! A lovely, joyful name.

Double barrel names are well-established and, while there may be some off occasions, people will call her by her full first name! Personally I would use a hyphen too clarify further, but I don’t find it necessary. I like the like the look of Summer-Faith as a full name, but both are lovely!

Me again! [name_f]My[/name_f] friend has an [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_u]Rose[/name_u] which she’s hoped to stick as a first but really it’s just her family and a few friends that call her [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_u]Rose[/name_u]. She’s 90% just [name_f]Ella[/name_f]. I think this was partly determined by the start because people didn’t really know if [name_u]Rose[/name_u] was part of the first or the middle (there was no other middle).

I have four family members with double firsts and none use hyphens (Mary [name_f]Lynne[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Amy[/name_f] & [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Ellen) but these are more established as doubles than [name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f]. I think you can get away with not using a hyphen especially if you also give the child a middle separately but I think it’s highly likely, she’ll just get [name_f]Summer[/name_f] by most people unless there’s a bit of work from you and then her insisting on the full name - and a hyphen would definitely help in this case. [name_m]Even[/name_m] then, she’ll probably get a nickname like SF, Saffy or Suffy (but at least from the two names).

All I know from those with double names is that if they have been given a double, they do like to be called the double at least most of the time - eg my family members are never Mary/Alice; they’re the full name or nicknames from the smoosh (eg Sanny for [name_f]Alice[/name_f] Anne).

Most double names aren’t hyphenated where I am (southern US), but I imagine it varies by region. I wouldn’t say [name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] is the most intuitive double name, and I expect it would take some parental reinforcement upon introduction to most people. It doesn’t sound strange, but I also don’t find it particularly unique / cool as the names themselves are rather common. Not a bad thing at all, but I wouldn’t choose it if that’s the impression you’re going for!

I think the hyphen makes it easier to get both parts of the name pronounced all the time.
I think three syllables is just fine for a full name, any more would likely result in people nicknaming her very quickly but Summer-Faith rolls off the tongue rather nicely.

Personally I think if someone’s going to use a double barrel name then you should use the full name most of the time. Otherwise just name them the name you’re planning on calling them. So I love the idea of calling her [name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] all the time! There’s a family I follow on Instagram and one of the girls is called [name_f]Makenna[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and she goes by [name_f]Makenna[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] all the time. Sometimes they call her [name_u]Mickey[/name_u], but NEVER just [name_f]Makenna[/name_f]! I think it’s so cool.

Thank you

I’ve known a few people with classic combos, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]David[/name_u], etc who only go by their double names at least when I knew them in school. I don’t personally like hyphens in names but it probably would help people know how to say their name. [name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] isn’t exactly classic so it may be more difficult.

I know a girl with a double name (no hyphen). She goes by both names all the time—at school, at home, with family, at church, everywhere. It’s not weird at all to say both. It’s just her name!!! Not having the hyphen means that sometimes only one of her names gets written or called, but either those around her or she herself can correct it easily.

I think if you want both to be used, hyphenating would emphasise that

I think a hyphen would make it known that it is one whole name. If the name is shorter, like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], I think people would still call her by both names. But if the name is longer, like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Rose[/name_u], then most people would take to calling her by her first only.

Hyphen seems unnecessary to me. It is a little long for a double name but lovely.
