Double Barreled Surnames

Thank you all for your in put. I have decided against a double barreled surname.

Any help please?

I don’t have a double barreled surname so I can’t speak to that. However, I’ve known people with double surnames and it hasn’t been an issue for them.

My favorite combinations would be:
[name_u]Kay[/name_u]-Abbotts
Lovekin-Abbotts
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]-Abbotts
[name_m]Watson[/name_m]-Abbotts
[name_u]Marlow[/name_u]-Abbotts

I like Abbotts at the end for some reason.

Okay, I do have a hyphenated last name. Its unique, usually memorable once explained and doesn’t destroy the flow of my name, nor my siblings and their kids names.
I have had a few issues with it, i’ll explain;

My surname is Myers-Cave. One from mom, one from dad.
Often, mostly over the phone people think my first name is Myers and my last name is Cave. I have to explain it and sometimes it takes people a while to understand.

I also find that many companies won’t accept hyphens and so my name ends up all mashed together.
This is also an issue when I go to login in or create accounts online, some places wont accept hyphens so i’m in a constant struggle of remembering if this particular website has a hyphen or not.

Sometimes the Cave is left off all together whether its because computers just don’t register the hyphen and deletes everything after it or because people think its not my actual name and think its not important.

It’s frustrating at times, but once you get set up and have explained it the few times to the important places it should be fine. Until you have kids and have to do it all over again for them.

I hope that’s given you some things to think about, if its important to you to have both names I don’t think you’ll find it as frustrating as me because it would have been your choice.

[name_m]Edward[/name_m]-Abbotts and [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]-Abbotts sound very fancy. Or if you’re looking for the other way around I like Abbotts-[name_u]Ellis[/name_u].

And just a wild one, what you said about water made me think of Abbotts-Clearwater. I think that’s very nice.

Goodluck.

Thank you both for replying. I do have a lot to think about. However are there any more opinions?

I like how [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]-Abbotts, Lovekin-Abbots, [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]-Abbotts, and [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]-Abbotts sound.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I should keep Abbotts the surname I have now in the first or second spot of the hyphenated surname?

Also which of these surnames sounds better together?

[name_m]Mayer[/name_m]-Abbotts

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]-Abbotts

Myers-Abbotts

Abbotts-Caldwell

Abbotts-[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]

Abbotts-[name_m]Hayes[/name_m]

I think it would be best to leave Abbotts as the ending surname as it’s already been established as your last name and you’d be adding the name in front of it. Are you changing your middle name? You could use any of the names as a second middle rather than combining the last names. I took care of twin boys whose father wasn’t in their lives, but their mother gave them two middle names, the second of which was their dad’s last name.

My husband has two last names. His second last name is cut off 70% of the time. His whole last name doesn’t show up on his bank card, the DMV either squished both last names together or put a hyphen. A lot of online forms only accept one last name. For all these reasons, I chose only one last name for myself and our daughters. If you really want to have two last names, I would do something that doesn’t end in s.
