Our first baby is due soon and we’ve been really struggling with his name (it’s a boy!).
We want something strong and easy to spell BUT nothing common.
We both love [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] and more recently [name_m]Dudley[/name_m].
Our surname is one syllable and starts with Q!
It’s been tricky. Both names seem to go really well with our surname.
We like [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] in that it’s a nod to my Scottish granny but also that he can be [name_m]Dougie[/name_m] when he’s a baby and then [name_m]Doug[/name_m] when he’s older and then [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] for anything professional!
However, we’ve recently started to think that [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] might be a bit geeky. So then [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] came to mind - we think [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] is cooler than [name_u]Douglas[/name_u].
I associate [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] with the handsome actor [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] [name_m]Booth[/name_m].
[name_m]Dudley[/name_m] instantly makes me think of [name_m]Earl[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Dudley[/name_m], [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I’s close friend.
I find both names equally lovely though [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] sounds more modern and [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] - a bit more aged. Plus [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] has royal associations which is always good so I think [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] is the better option.
Here are some suggestions from me that you might like:

[name_u]Douglas[/name_u] reminds me of [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] [name_m]Fairbanks[/name_m], and [name_m]Dougie[/name_m] is a cute nickname.
The only association I have with [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] is from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]; I think it lacks the sophistication of [name_u]Douglas[/name_u], and I can’t get over the first syllable of “dud”.
I’m another vote for [name_u]Douglas[/name_u]-- it’s much more distinguished and classic to me. [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] reminds me of [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] [name_f]Do[/name_f]-Right from [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] and Bullwinkle. Some similar names are [name_m]Duncan[/name_m], [name_m]Donald[/name_m], [name_m]Donal[/name_m], or [name_m]Gordon[/name_m]. Out of these I like [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] best.
I love both names very much and think they are both old-fashioned cool!
Personally if I were a boy/man, I’d rather have many nicknames to choose from ([name_m]Doug[/name_m], [name_m]Dougie[/name_m], [name_m]Doogie[/name_m], [name_m]Fairbanks[/name_m], [name_m]Dougal[/name_m], [name_m]Dougray[/name_m]) than just one, particularly if that one were Dud!
I much prefer [name_u]Douglas[/name_u]. I’m sorry to say that [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] only makes me think of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].
Agree with the others: [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] is much better and comes with nicknames [name_m]Dougie[/name_m] and [name_m]Doug[/name_m]. Dud is not a good nn. [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] Dursley is about the worst possible association.
