[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I have finally narrowed it down to three names: [name_m]Colin[/name_m], [name_u]John[/name_u], or [name_u]Connor[/name_u].
We would love feedback on all three and suggestions for middle names. Last name is Hoffman. We would like it to complement our oldest’s name: [name_m]Alan[/name_m] [name_u]Reid[/name_u].
All feedback, positive and not so positive is welcome and appreciated.
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] is my favourite! It just has this laid-back, friendly vibe to it that I really like. [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_m]Alan[/name_m] are too similar for my tastes, and I just find [name_u]Connor[/name_u] more charming than [name_u]John[/name_u]!
How lovely! All three names are great. I think [name_m]Colin[/name_m] most closely matches [name_m]Alan[/name_m], but perhaps too closely. So my vote is with Connor–complementary, but not matchy. [name_u]Connor[/name_u] Hoffman is very handsome.
I think [name_u]John[/name_u] is classic, timeless, laidback, and handsome yet steadfast. A really nice, solid versatile name. I also like the 1-2 syllable flow of the first and last names better than the 2-2 flow of [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_u]Connor[/name_u]. [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] are a bit too close for me, while [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and [name_u]Connor[/name_u] seem like more of a stylistic mismatch. [name_u]John[/name_u] is the clear winner for me!
However, [name_u]John[/name_u] is my absolute favourite. [name_u]John[/name_u] is my dad’s name so for me this is a lovely association so I’m already a sucker for this name. Still even without this association I still love him. [name_u]John[/name_u] is strong, dependable, relaxed and has this rugged feel. [name_u]John[/name_u] has great biblical history along with the lovely meaning ‘G-d is gracious’ which I love. I also really like the nickname [name_u]Johnny[/name_u]. I think [name_u]John[/name_u] & Al@n sound really handsome together very cohesive and I think [name_u]John[/name_u] sounds strong with your surname.
[name_f]My[/name_f] fave for you would be [name_u]John[/name_u] - I feel like it goes best with [name_m]Alan[/name_m], and goes well with Hoffman. But [name_u]Connor[/name_u] also works well.
I ADORE the name [name_m]Colin[/name_m], probably more than the others, but I don’t feel like it works so well with [name_m]Alan[/name_m] (both 2 syllable names with an l ending in n, too matchy), or with Hoffman - once again 2 syllables ending in n, and with a matching o sound makes it feel kinda trickier to say, a bit if a mouthful?
Stylistically, [name_m]Colin[/name_m] works too, but [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_m]Alan[/name_m] are a bit match-y for me!
I’d go for [name_u]John[/name_u], for it’s solidity, it’s sort of clunky, slightly dated but timeless charm. Together, they’re giving ‘Victorian [name_m]Classic[/name_m] Hero’ vibes.
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] is nice too - takes the sibset in a slightly more contemporary direction. It’s sort of rugged and cool but gentle too.
I like all 3 names. [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was that [name_m]Colin[/name_m] fits best as a brother to [name_m]Alan[/name_m], but others are correct that soundwise it clashes a bit.
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] is a great name. It does sound a lot more contemporary to me than [name_m]Alan[/name_m] does, but I think it works. (I know 2 brothers named [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and D@rcy, which feel like a similar pairing to me - one classic, one more modern, but they do complement each other).
[name_u]John[/name_u] is the best fit with [name_m]Alan[/name_m], I think. It’s obviously such a classic name that I think it suits anyone, so it’s a failsafe choice. But for boys today, it’s relatively uncommon, which makes it that little more interesting.
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] is too similar to [name_m]Alan[/name_m], I think. [name_u]John[/name_u] or [name_u]Connor[/name_u] would both be fine though. Both go well with [name_m]Alan[/name_m].
I think that for either, last names that don’t end in n would be good middle names for you.
Some ideas:
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Bennett[/name_u]
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Parker[/name_u]
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Maxwell[/name_u]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_u]Maxwell[/name_u]
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Barrett[/name_u]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_u]Hayes[/name_u]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Beckett[/name_u]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_u]Beckett[/name_u]
[name_f]My[/name_f] vote goes to [name_u]John[/name_u]! I think [name_u]John[/name_u] and [name_m]Alan[/name_m] sound magnificent together for siblings. [name_u]John[/name_u] is a timeless, elegant, classic choice. Despite its constant popularity, I think nowadays sounds refreshing as a first name. Both [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and [name_u]John[/name_u] could be considered old-fashioned, traditional, gentle and charming short names.
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_u]Connor[/name_u] are great charismatic and distinct names for a boy too. However, they feel more attached to the recent decades (80’s, 90’s, 00’s and 10’s). Both names have a more modern/ less timeless energy.
Great short list. I feel [name_u]John[/name_u] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] complement Alan’s traditional style best. I would be thrilled to meet either as both names have appeared on my own list. [name_u]Connor[/name_u] would be unexpected but not a completely startling choice. It comes across as a more modern choice but it’s warm and friendly like the other two.
As mentioned by others in the thread, [name_m]Colin[/name_m] is closer to [name_m]Alan[/name_m] in sound but if it’s your favourite I wouldn’t let that be the reason not to use it. I think [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] are distinct enough to avoid issues. It strikes me as a handsome pair and I wouldn’t assume any effort was made to match the sounds. It just seems like the style of name you like.
I personally think [name_u]John[/name_u] works the best but [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_u]Connor[/name_u] are good too!
[name_u]John[/name_u] and [name_m]Alan[/name_m] sounds good together
[name_m]Alan[/name_m] [name_u]Reid[/name_u] Hoffman and [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Adam[/name_m] Hoffman
