I need help!
I’m starting to get so frustrated with the baby name search!!!
I’m getting closer to ‘the name’, but I don’t have it yet and I’m running out of inspiration.
Help me!
My ODD is named [name_f]Annika[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. I love the homey, down to earth nickname with the more unique/unusual (although traditional) full name.
My DH and I are of Scandinavian, English, and [name_m]German[/name_m] ancestry and would prefer a name that reflects that history, but it’s not an absolute requirement.
I love the nickname ‘[name_f]Katie[/name_f]’ and have been kicking around the name of [name_f]Katarina[/name_f]. And I like it - I really do! But it’s not quite IT.
Neither are [name_f]Katrina[/name_f] or [name_f]Katia[/name_f].
I’ve even been thinking about [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and she will always have the option for [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] if there happen to be other [name_f]Katie[/name_f]'s in her class at school.
(Note - for unrelated, but valid reasons I cannot use [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] as a first name. Derivatives and Middles are totally viable though!)
Again, I think I’m starting to just get a bit discouraged by the name search thing, and I need a pep talk and perhaps a fresh perspective = any ideas, my darling naming wizards?
[name_f]Katie[/name_f] is sweet! Have you thought of [name_f]Catalina[/name_f]? I knew a girl with this name, but she didn’t use a nickname. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to throw it out there.
I absolutely love [name_f]Annika[/name_f], nicknamed [name_f]Annie[/name_f]! You’ve given yourself a real challenge to get baby #2 just right.
I really like [name_f]Katarina[/name_f]. It matches [name_f]Annika[/name_f] in style and is a really lovely name. But if it’s not “the” name, it’s not “the” name. What about [name_f]Catriona[/name_f]? By the way, [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] is a great name as well- [name_f]Annie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is adorable!
Here are some other ideas:
[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f]- It’s a [name_m]German[/name_m] name that comes with lots of nickname options: [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]- Also [name_m]German[/name_m]. What about [name_f]Lola[/name_f] or [name_u]Rory[/name_u]?
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]- [name_m]German[/name_m] again. [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] is a cute choice, and it matches well with [name_f]Annie[/name_f].
[name_f]Rosamond[/name_f]- [name_m]German[/name_m] name as well. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] would both be a nice choice.
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]- [name_f]One[/name_f] more [name_m]German[/name_m] name. I think [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Mila[/name_f] are very sweet.
[name_f]Brigitta[/name_f]- A Scandinavian name with some spunk! [name_f]Britta[/name_f] is a nickname idea.
[name_f]Karina[/name_f]- Scandinavian as well. It’s a bit of a stretch, but I think you could use [name_f]Katie[/name_f] as a nickname.
[name_f]Kirsten[/name_f]- [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] Scandinavian name. [name_f]Katie[/name_f] could work for this too, although [name_f]Kirstie[/name_f] is another option.
[name_f]Kara[/name_f]
[name_f]Mieke[/name_f] (mee-ka)
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] (ee-da)
Laika (lai-ka)
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Elke[/name_f] (elk-ah)
good luck! I know the feeling of being on the endless search of the perfect name…I envy those who can just pick one name and stick with it…I find I am always searching for something better.
Offhand [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f] comes to mind ([name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] is more exotic and luxurious than [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]).
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] is lovely! I also live [name_f]Annika[/name_f]. I think sisters named [name_f]Annika[/name_f] “[name_f]Annie[/name_f]” and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] “[name_f]Katie[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]” would be lovely.
Do you want a name that reflects your heritage or one that also works in these languages? Because a th sound is pronounced like a t in most languages and Katharine would be Kah-tah-ree-ne in german.
Katharina is way more popular here or even just Katrin (which you’ll find more women than kids named this).
I like seraares suggestions, even though you’d hardly find a little German girl named Elke nowadays.
Ida would be fantastic with Annika.
Mila also sounds (I don’t know its heritage) very scandinavian but also German and English to me.
Laika and Mieke are very Nordic names and in Germany only get used by parents who want that (scandinavian) sound.
Sylvia would fit in with Annika, even though you’ll find many more Annikas running around than Sylvies or Sylvias (Sylvie is used more on its own than as a nn).
The question is: Do you want a name that people people in these countries would actually name their children or one that sound very scandinavian and German?
In response to a PP, I’m very much American, but would like a name that reflects our cultural heritage as Northern/Western European. Excellent distinction though between a reflection of a culture and a name that is actually used in that culture!
I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the names [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]/[name_f]Alethea[/name_f]/[name_f]Thea[/name_f]/[name_f]Theodosia[/name_f]! Ha! But my YDS is already named [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u]!
I was in love with [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] for this DD, but DH but the kabosh on those. :o
Similar issue with both [name_f]Callista[/name_f] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] (great names!)
The daughter of a very close friend is named [name_f]Mieke[/name_f] (and she is terribly spoiled which has ruined the association for me to be bluntly honest.)
Ha! And MY name is [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f]!
I’m finding [name_f]Katrin[/name_f] and Katianna intriguing - I’m going to have to do some research and ponder these ideas for awhile…
I may also be finding new interest in [name_f]Katia[/name_f]. I have been afraid it will be too difficult for American’s to pronounce, but perhaps not - I need to think on it…
Hmm…
I really love [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] it’s a lovely combination and I actually prefer the [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] nickname to [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is a sweeter nickname which sounds prettier with [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. [name_f]Katie[/name_f] is rather common in the UK it feels that every other 13-19 year old girl is [name_f]Katie[/name_f] or [name_f]Paige[/name_f]. I’m not sure on [name_f]Katarina[/name_f], the name does reflect your heritage but it’s not my thing. [name_f]Katrina[/name_f] is similar again isn’t my thing! I do like [name_f]Katia[/name_f] I feel this name has a lot of spunk and works with [name_f]Annika[/name_f].
Suggestions of names with the nickname [name_f]Katie[/name_f]:
