[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is gorgeous! I also love [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] (so sweet and spunky), [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] (such an enchanting combo), and [name_f]Leila[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]!
Ranked from my fave to least fave:
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Leila[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] (this is very pretty, the potential annoyance of having to correct/clarify the spelling a lot is what prevented it from being in the top three)
[name_f]Serenity[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] (not really my style and [name_f]Serenity[/name_f] is the only first name that I don’t think flows with what I’m guessing your last name is)
[name_m]Bowie[/name_m] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] (the only one I actively dislike)
Impressive job in getting it down to just six!
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are:
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - sleek, sharp, and stylish
[name_f]Leila[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] - love the bright sounds, but dark, night time imagery it conjures
[name_m]Bowie[/name_m] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] - bubbly, fresh and balanced
[name_f]Ruby[/name_f] is my favorite, then [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is my second favorite good luck!
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] are my favorites with your surname! [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is my absolute favorite, though - [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is beautiful and the ties to your mom and sister with Mae/Maeve is very sweet. She would be my pick!
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] are my favorites!
[name_f]My[/name_f] top three are [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], and [name_m]Bowie[/name_m] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. If [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] was an option I think that would be my ultimate top
[name_m]Just[/name_m] some pop culture references the names make me think of if that helps at all:
[name_m]Bowie[/name_m] - [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Bowie[/name_m] obviously, probably the first question you will be asked when telling people her name if you are fans
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] - song by the Goo Goo Dolls probably not popular enough to be referenced often and the song doesn’t actually say [name_f]Iris[/name_f] in it
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - Friends will probably be the biggest reference you get, though my first associations are The [name_m]Magic[/name_m] School Bus and The [name_m]Catcher[/name_m] in the [name_m]Rye[/name_m]
I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]! I also love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Leila[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] - I love it and it’s so pretty but it feels a little repetitive for me because [name_f]Leila[/name_f] means “night”
[name_m]Bowie[/name_m] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] - I’m not a huge fan of the trend of giving girls “boy” names
[name_f]Serenity[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] - Personally I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Serenity[/name_f] but the combo is very pretty
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] is my fave but I love how you put all these options together!
Great names/combos! [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] gets my vote!
I have an [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and in almost 7 years nobody ever mentioned the song. The only reason I know about the song is because I researched the name extensively.
I figured it would probably not be a common association. I love the song so it is something that pops up for me when I hear [name_f]Iris[/name_f], but know that it wouldn’t be common place especially since the name is not in the song
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] gets my vote (and seems like it might be your favorite?)!
Hey everyone! First and foremost, we want to thank everyone for all of their insights on our name list. We’ve been reading all the comments for the past few days and have actually found them more helpful than we thought we would! I think asking for outside opinions has given us the opportunity to really sit with this decision and put some more in-depth thought into it. We’ve also spent this week practicing using each name, just to see how they felt. For example, driving to work in the morning, I’d say out loud something along the lines of, “Hey, [name_m]Bowie[/name_m], do you see the cows over there?" [name_m]Or[/name_m] he would say “Phoebe, look at that firetruck!” [name_m]Or[/name_m] we’d be in the house and randomly say “Leila, do you want peanut butter or Nutella on your toast?” (Side note to baby girl: the correct answer to that question is “both” ) [name_m]Or[/name_m] even to each other “Hey, have you seen Serenity’s shoes?” Anyway, this has all helped us narrow down some more names. So, here’s an update on where we stand with our list.
Within probably 12 hours of posting, we decided to eliminate [name_f]Serenity[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. We love the name so much, but we realized out of the six, it was the one we were the least excited about. We had similar realizations over the next few days with [name_m]Bowie[/name_m] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Leila[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f], so as of right now our top three are [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f], and [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. I’d also like to point out that we didn’t necessarily notice this until a few days ago, but my mom, my sister, myself, my soon-to-be SIL (brother’s fiancée) and DH’s mom all have M middle names (Mae, [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Madison[/name_f], Michele,) so it’s kind of fun that even though we didn’t intentionally plan it that way, it appears baby girl will have one as well.
Personally, I think I’m leaning towards [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I can’t really explain why. At first, my one hangup on it was that it didn’t have an obvious pet name form that we liked. Like Phoebs for [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] or [name_f]Rue[/name_f] for [name_f]Ruby[/name_f]. Only ones we could think of were Riss or [name_f]Irie[/name_f], which we weren’t crazy about. So, I literally googled “nicknames for Iris” and the first search result was a post on this forum from like a decade ago, and one of the suggestions there was “Izzy.” I actually really liked that one. Maybe because it’s similar to [name_f]Indie[/name_f], which was on our big list. Not sure, but once we had that was when I started leaning towards [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. A few comments also mentioned the Goo Goo Dolls song, and while that wasn’t exactly the reason we had it on the list, I do have some happy memories attached to that song, which, I think, contributes to why I like the name so much. Also, the Goo Goo Dolls just announced a big tour yesterday for next summer, so idk, maybe that’s a sign Anyway, I do like the idea of naming her after a song. [name_f]My[/name_f] best friend growing up was named [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] after the [name_m]Rod[/name_m] [name_m]Stewart[/name_m] song which I always thought was really cool. Also had another school friend named [name_m]Kyrie[/name_m] after the Mr. Mister song. [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] would tick that box for us, too. There’s “Ruby Soho” by Rancid, whom we both like and which one of my favorite bands in the world did a cover of. I think that definitely made [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] appeal to DH more, but he’s leaning towards [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] the most right now. Neither of us are ready to take [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] off yet, though. So, that’s where we’re at. Hopefully, we’ll be down to our final pick before she gets here, but if not, I’m totally cool with going in with these three and deciding once we meet her. Six-ish more weeks to go! I’ll try to remember to update when time comes. Thanks again everyone!
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] or [name_f]Leila[/name_f]
They’re beautiful names, Iris, Phoebe & Ruby.
I think it’s good you’ve struck off Serenity & Bowie with your last name - Serenity & H are both things you could want for yourself. Bowie H reminds me of “blowing a gale”. I also don’t think they’ll date quite as well as your top 3.
Iris H sounds super clever - giving writer imagery
Phoebe H - gives happy, uppercrust Brit vibes
Ruby H - gives a more playful but forthright feel
For the middle name, with your last name being one syllable, I’d consider:
Iris Marianne / Iris Maven / Iris Marjorie
Phoebe Margot / Phoebe Maple / Phoebe Maris
Ruby Maren / Ruby Morgan / Ruby Matilda
Good luck!
I think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] goes beautifully with your last name! I love the connection with the song and the flower. Also, the nickname [name_f]Izzy[/name_f] is inspired! It seems more fresh and playful when used with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], and yet it’s still very intuitive to me with the similar sounds.
Best of luck
I think you can’t go wrong with any of those three choices! They are all adorable, spunky, feminine and versatile. Side note on nicknames- it’s hard to plan for them! Like, I swore we wouldn’t call my [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] Linky and now we call him that all the time so I wouldn’t reject any of them on the basis that there’s no good nickname. I look forward to seeing which name you choose!
I’m so curious what you picked??
Ooh, these types of names are right up my alley. I love noun MN, like [name_f]Moon[/name_f], [name_f]Snow[/name_f], [name_f]Dove[/name_f], etc,
[name_f][/name_f]Names with meaning are a total plus for me
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] would literally mean “Rainbow Moon”.
However, [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is beautiful and elegant. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] was a [name_f]Queen[/name_f] in [name_m]Irish[/name_m] folklore. The name means “warrior queen”
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Leila[/name_f] means [name_m]Dark[/name_m] or [name_m]Night[/name_m]. I love the meaning of this paired with [name_f]Moon[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]For me
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Leila[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]
