[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all! We’re down to 4 weeks until the due date, and my husband and I can’t officially settle on anything! Is that a problem? I think we’re going to take a list of 100 names with us to the delivery room We don’t know if we’re having a boy or a girl - so we have names galore for each of them. I apologize for going over these names again - some of them now for the third time - with you all. I just never imagined it would be this hard to make a decision! I’ll list our “short” list on both - kind of in order of how we’re feeling right now. I’ve only listed them separately, so maybe listing the boys & girls together will help figure out what goes better with what for any future sibsets. [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!
Boys:

Girls:

Thanks AGAIN for any input. Anyone else completely clueless at this stage in the game?
I think these names would be my top three choices:
1 [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m] - two of my faves
2 [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] - two classics
3 [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] - a saintly twosome
1 [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] - Gallic perfection
2 [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - I like this mix of spunk and tradition. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] would be lovely too.
3 [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] - two fine underused names in this modern time
It’s okay to not be sure! You only get one chance at this after all. You’ll probably be more certain about the name once you see your baby.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites for a boy:
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (beautiful name, [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is getting quite common though, I don’t know if popularity is important to you)
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] is so cute!)
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] (I have always loved the name [name_m]Felix[/name_m], lovely meaning and it’s nice that you get to honour your grandfather)
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites for a girl:
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Betsy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] (very retro, it would be cute to see this name on a little girl)
[name_m]Saint[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] of [name_u]Como[/name_u]'s feast day is [name_f]July[/name_f] 1, so we think it would be neat to use this name if baby comes that day!
Thanks! I’m a little concerned about the popularity of [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but if we end up with that name, we know we’ll call baby [name_m]Hank[/name_m], which isn’t nearly as popular. I also scoured the name boards when visiting local daycare centers … no Henrys
You have some great choices! Here are my top three for each…
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Gerald[/name_m]- thanks to Orphan Balck I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]! [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] is my dad’s name.
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m]- a very close second! I really like [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]- I prefer [name_u]Cal[/name_u] as a nn.
[name_m]Enoch[/name_m] nn Nucky I’d be terrified people would nn him nooky which is slang for sex.
[name_u]Blaise[/name_u] reminds me too much of a friends dog named [name_u]Blaze[/name_u].
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] I like, but I just don’t understand the nn [name_m]Hank[/name_m]. However, I do like [name_m]Hank[/name_m] on it’s own. [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Philip[/name_m] or [name_m]Hank[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Erin[/name_f]- such a cute name… I have always loved [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. I met a little girl named [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and she had the nn [name_f]Effie[/name_f].
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]- love love love! Very spunky and girly.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]- [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is such a sweet name.
I have never personally cared for [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], Or [name_f]Margot[/name_f].
I hadn’t heard [name_m]Enoch[/name_m] before, but it would be my least favourite of the names. To me, it looks really similar to the word “Eunuch”.
I liked a lot of your girl names!
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Dory[/name_u])
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Betsy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
Personally I find meeting the baby to be very beneficial to picking a name, so you may find it much easier then. Although it’s probably a good idea to have it narrowed down to a handful of each gender at most when the time comes. [name_m]New[/name_m] baby is a lot to deal with without making the name picking more stressful. But we all have our own baby naming methods. I didn’t know until my son was born what his name would be, and it wasn’t the name we had tentatively picked (because at the time we thought we had to have one picked) or on the short list but a name I had crossed off previously. Luckily I had obsessed over the names enough I didn’t even need to look at the lists, they were all in my head and his name just came to me moments after he looked at me.
One thing you could do is try each name on for a day and see how it feels. Call the bump by name, say it out loud. Practice saying it in various life situations. (this is my son/daughter…, nice to meet you…, …isn’t home right now etc).
Give up on anything that gives you some doubts, so cross off [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Enoch[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]Blase[/name_u] [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Betsy[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] (how likely is it that she’ll be born on a specific day? not likely enough to bet on it for a name I think)
so what you have left is:
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Gerald[/name_m]
[name_f]My[/name_f] personal top two choices are [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m]. They make a rather nice set to choose from I think also, being comprised of the same elements theo and dora but reversed.
It is more than okay to not be sure about the name- I think it is worse when parents become rigid on a name, and then they realise it doesn’t fit their child at all, though it may be a lovely name. Then they either stick with it, or have to go back to the drawing board. Personally, my favourites are:
Boys:
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Gerald[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (with the nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u] or [name_u]Vinnie[/name_u], not CJ)
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Philip[/name_m] ([name_m]Hank[/name_m] is a wonderful nn)
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is either [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Philip[/name_m] (you don’t meet many little [name_m]Henry[/name_m]'s nowadays- at least not where I live) or [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (I love [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]- such a strong, luscious, handsome name). [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] is wonderful too- I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Gerald[/name_m], probably because of the book [name_f]My[/name_f] Family and Other Animals :).
Girls:
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Betsy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Erin[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] very favourite is [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]- it is very classy, and everyone knows the name, but it is underused, with a gloriously rich sound- like velvet.
I’m going to have to read that book! I looked it up and see my name, my dad’s name, and other baby name picks as characters/family members/pets - what a neat coincidence!
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m] nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] nn [name_m]Hank[/name_m]
Hopefully you figure out the names before he or she is born I think [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Erin[/name_f] are cute together and I like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m] with [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Irene[/name_f], if that helps at all too.
For boys, I really like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] from your list and I think it would sound good with any of your middles listed. I like it’s familiar but spunky feel and quite honestly I am burned out on [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Blaise[/name_u] just doesn’t seem to fit.
For girls I love love love [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] but I may be biased because they are both honor names in my family that I would love to use someday. I love familiar and fun [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] with classic [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] as a sibset are just too perfect!
