We really like the name [name_u]Drew[/name_u]… just [name_u]Drew[/name_u], not [name_m]Andrew[/name_m].
If you heard the name [name_u]Drew[/name_u], would you assume it’s a nn for [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]? Or is [name_u]Drew[/name_u] now common enough as a standalone?
Also, just realising that Drew could be considered a girls’ name. When you hear Drew, would you immediately think boy, or be unsure?
I would, yes, but practically I’m not sure it would make all that much difference. If he introduced himself as [name_u]Drew[/name_u] it’s not like I would start calling him [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]. I would ask ‘Is that short for [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]?’ if I had to use his name in any sort of official capacity. I imagine a man named [name_u]Drew[/name_u] might get a bit tired of explaining that his name was ‘just [name_u]Drew[/name_u]’ in certain circumstances, but for everyday life I’m sure it wouldn’t be a big deal.
I actually had never thought of [name_u]Drew[/name_u] as short for [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]. (All the Andrews in my life go by [name_u]Andy[/name_u]).
And while I do know one girl [name_u]Drew[/name_u], this name remains firmly in the boy category for me.
