Less than two weeks to go and it seems our short list is growing. Our rough criteria is something that is traditional/old fashioned but not popular (ruling out [name]William[/name], [name]Thomas[/name] etc) but not too obscure (like [name]Herbert[/name]) and I’d love there to be a natural nickname (like our son, [name]Theodore[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name]).
My husband vetoed [name]Arthur[/name], which was one of my favourites. His current pick is [name]Felix[/name] but I just don’t love it. Seems too popular and trendy. My pick is either [name]August[/name] or [name]Solomon[/name].
All comments would be hugely appreciated. Middle name is possibly [name]Jack[/name] (wouldn’t work for [name]Jude[/name] though). Last name is Campton. Our son’s name is [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Henry[/name].
I love [name]August[/name] [name]Jack[/name] with [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Henry[/name]! Then again, I’m biased. [name]Jack[/name] [name]August[/name] [name]Cole[/name] is on my short list.
I like [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Jude[/name], but they don’t really have good nicknames. [name]Solomon[/name] ([name]Sol[/name]?) is nice, but not a favorite.
[name]Angus[/name] ([name]Gus[/name]) - I prefer this to [name]August[/name], also [name]Augustine[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name] (Phin)
[name]Dashiell[/name] ([name]Dash[/name])
[name]Calvin[/name] ([name]Cal[/name])
[name]Wesley[/name] ([name]Wes[/name])
[name]Hudson[/name] ([name]Huck[/name])
[name]Lennox[/name] ([name]Knox[/name])
[name]Quentin[/name] ([name]Quin[/name])
[name]Edgar[/name] ([name]Ed[/name])
[name]Zachariah[/name] ([name]Zach[/name])
[name]Ezekiel[/name] ([name]Zeke[/name])
[name]Bennett[/name] ([name]Ben[/name])
[name]Landon[/name] ([name]Andy[/name])
[name]Solomon[/name] [name]Jack[/name] gets my vote. [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Jack[/name] are perfect as brothers.
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Henry[/name], first of all – very nice naming job! [name]August[/name] [name]Jack[/name] is my favorite by far. [name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Gus[/name]! I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Frederic[/name] (esp. with nn [name]Freddie[/name]), but [name]Frederic[/name] [name]Jack[/name] seems a little too heavy on the hard “c” sound. Although this is not on your list, I’d like to throw out my son’s name for consideration since [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]August[/name] were the other names on our short list: [name]Samuel[/name]. [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Jack[/name] sounds very nice!
I agree that [name]Frederic[/name] [name]Jack[/name] has too many hard “c” sounds, and even [name]Felix[/name] [name]Jack[/name] almost seems like a tongue-twister.
My top pick is [name]Solomon[/name]. I love that it means “peace” in Hebrew and it goes well with the meaning of your other son’s name (“gift from God”). As for [name]Solomon[/name]'s nickname, I think [name]Saul[/name] or Solo (pronounced “[name]Saul[/name]-oh”) would be perfect!
Catheyc - [name]Samuel[/name] was an option but we’ve decided it’s too popular here in Australia. [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Jack[/name] is a fabulous name! Thanks for your comments on [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Henry[/name], [name]Theo[/name] really suits him!
agirlinred - [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Jack[/name] would work well with [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Henry[/name]. I just don’t know if we are brave enough and it does feel like a big name for a little boy. I’m certainly giving it serious thought.
kala_way - if we use [name]August[/name] we’d nn him either [name]Gus[/name] or [name]Augie[/name]. [name]Wesley[/name] and [name]Quentin[/name] have been on my list but my husband knocked them off.
ashthedreamer and dantea - I do have a soft spot for [name]August[/name] [name]Jack[/name]. I just have some convincing to do with my husband!
I think it fits your criteria well, has the great nickname [name]Sully[/name], and brothers [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Sullivan[/name] ([name]Theo[/name] and [name]Sully[/name]) work perfectly together.
I have been crushing on [name]August[/name] lately - and I think [name]Jack[/name] is lovely paired with it! So, my vote goes to [name]August[/name] [name]Jack[/name].
Maybe its too obscure for you, but another 3-syllable old-fashioned name (like [name]Theodore[/name]) is [name]Sylvester[/name]. I like [name]Sylvester[/name] [name]Jack[/name]. However, I also like [name]August[/name] [name]Jack[/name] very much.
euonym - we haven’t thought of [name]Sullivan[/name], here in Australia it’s definitely still in the surname, rather than first name, category.
lori johnson - I’ve ruled [name]Sebastian[/name] out, mostly because my sister in law observed that ‘every [name]Theo[/name] she knows has a brother called [name]Seb[/name] ([name]Sebastian[/name])’! I want to give her an exception to that rule!
It seems that [name]August[/name] [name]Jack[/name] has the most support. Now to convince that pesky husband of mine…
Thanks berries.
everwaiteing - [name]Sylvester[/name] is an interesting one, I expect my conservative husband wants to play it a little safer than that.
I think [name]August[/name] would go great with [name]Theodore[/name] but I also love [name]Solomon[/name] (though not crazy about [name]Sol[/name]). I also love [name]Jude[/name]. And [name]Arthur[/name]… Would your husband be on board if you suggested [name]Ari[/name] as a nn? I love [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Ari[/name] together!
[name]August[/name] Campton or [name]Frederic[/name] Campton would be my favourite picks from your list!
I think they’re all brilliant names though, and I’m sure once you meet your little man you’ll make the perfect decision. Goodluck
onelove19 - my husband is dead against [name]Arthur[/name], even though I think it’d be perfect. [name]Alas[/name]! I too love [name]Solomon[/name] but feel blase about [name]Sol[/name] or [name]Solly[/name] as a nn, and her in Australia a nn is important.
Thanks elizabeth1, I suspect we’ll head to hospital with a short list of 3 and decide from that. We did the same when we had [name]Theo[/name] (decided between [name]Frederic[/name], [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name]) and we liked making that final decision once we met the baby.
My favorites are [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Jack[/name] or [name]August[/name] [name]Jack[/name]. I agree with you on [name]Felix[/name] being trendy, but I do like that one, too. I like [name]Jude[/name] in the middle, but I do stumble over how it rhymes with dude, which guys are often called in a jokey way. [name]Frederick[/name] is a great name but I would think you’d need to be comfortable with [name]Freddie[/name], which doesn’t match [name]Theo[/name] that well.
Thanks thuja, you’ve basically articulated my thoughts. Neither [name]Felix[/name] nor [name]Jude[/name] really excite me and while I like [name]Frederic[/name] I am not comfortable with [name]Freddie[/name]. [name]Solomon[/name] or [name]August[/name] it is. If we use [name]Solomon[/name] we may go with [name]Jude[/name] as a middle name rather than [name]Jack[/name] as both [name]Solomon[/name] and [name]Jack[/name] are family names, so it’d be nice to have a more individual name, like [name]Jude[/name], as part of the mix.
