Due in 3 weeks! Help us choose - Thomas, Andrew, Jacob, or Ryan?

Hi everyone,

We will be having a baby boy shortly (a brother for Daniel) and are having trouble choosing a name for our little guy. We would love to hear your thoughts/impressions for each name. We are looking for a classic, traditional name. Our family last name is one of the most common (if not THE most common) hispanic last names with 3 syllables. Aside from my husband’s heritage giving us the last name, that is about it - we don’t speak spanish, all name pronounciations would certainly be american, etc.

Here are the names we have tossed around so far:

Thomas (nn Tom is what we would use nearly 100% of the time)

Andrew (I like, hub’s not so sure)

Jacob (Hub’s favorite, I like nn Jake but worry about having such a common first and last name)

Ryan (Does this one sound dated?)

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

I would choose [name]Thomas[/name] or [name]Andrew[/name]. Good luck!

I like [name]Ryan[/name] (my nephew) and [name]Andrew[/name] (but I prefer [name]Drew[/name]). I like [name]Thomas[/name], but not [name]Tom[/name]. And [name]Jacob[/name] is just too popular.

[name]Thomas[/name] is one of my favorite boys names!

I like all but [name]Jacob[/name]. I am SO sick of [name]Jacob[/name]

[name]Thomas[/name] is my favorite. Most boys I know with [name]Thomas[/name] as their first name go by their middle name, so it’s less common than the statistics say. [name]Daniel[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] are perfect together.

Definitely [name]Thomas[/name]! I like [name]Thomas[/name] best unshortened, but [name]Tom[/name] is nice enough. I don’t like any of the others as a first name at all, but [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jacob[/name] or [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Andrew[/name] would be lovely combos. [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jacob[/name] could also go by TJ if you/he want to. My least favorite is [name]Ryan[/name]. Dated, common, boring, and nowhere near as nice as [name]Daniel[/name], which seems a bit unfair.

I’d say choose anything but [name]Jacob[/name], which is SO common.

With [name]Daniel[/name], I really love either [name]Ryan[/name] (which I do not consider dated!) or [name]Thomas[/name] best.

Actually, I think [name]Ryan[/name] is my favourite, so [name]Ryan[/name] gets my vote. [name]Ryan[/name] is a handsome, strong, boyish name with lots of charm!

My favourite is [name]Thomas[/name]!

[name]Thomas[/name]. It’s a classic that would sound so fresh on a baby.

[name]Thomas[/name]! I adore [name]Thomas[/name]. I actually like all the names on the list except for [name]Jacob[/name], just not a fan. I think [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Andrew[/name] or [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Ryan[/name] has a ring to it myself.

  1. [name]Jacob[/name] - my fav!
  2. [name]Thomas[/name]
  3. [name]Andrew[/name]
  4. [name]Ryan[/name] - I’ve seen this on too many girls

[name]Ryan[/name] and [name]Jacob[/name] are dated now. [name]Thomas[/name] is a lovely name and works with [name]Daniel[/name] too. I really like [name]Andrew[/name] too so for me it would be a toss up between [name]Thomas[/name] and [name]Andrew[/name].

If you chose [name]Andrew[/name] your sibset may end up being [name]Drew[/name] and [name]Dan[/name] or if you go with [name]Thomas[/name] - [name]Tom[/name] and [name]Dan[/name].

I think I would choose [name]Andrew[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] as baby’s name.

rollo

I like [name]Jacob[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name]

I like [name]Andrew[/name]

[name]Do[/name] you call [name]Daniel[/name] by a nn? [name]Dan[/name] or [name]Danny[/name]? I like both [name]Daniel[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] in their full form. If [name]Daniel[/name] is called [name]Daniel[/name], then I don’t think you should use [name]Thomas[/name] and call him [name]Tom[/name].
I love [name]Jake[/name]! [name]Jacob[/name] is the #1 boy’s name though.
I like [name]Ryan[/name]. It doesn’t feel dated, but it is over used. It is like [name]Jennifer[/name] for girls. There are lots of famous Jennifers and Ryans!
However, I do still like it.
[name]Andrew[/name] is okay. A tad boring. I dislike [name]Andy[/name]. [name]Drew[/name] is okay. I do think of [name]Drew[/name] Barrymore when I hear it, even though I dislike boy names on girls and [name]Drew[/name] for girls isn’t that popular.
[name]Thomas[/name] is my pick. [name]Thomas[/name] is a classic, like [name]Daniel[/name], so they go well together.

I love the name [name]Thomas[/name]!

Thanks for all the feedback. I appreciate it.

Someone asked if we call [name]Daniel[/name] by his full name, and we do. In that sense, I guess it could make sense to pair it with another name that we plan to use in its entirety. Probably as [name]Daniel[/name] gets older he will shorten it to [name]Dan[/name], but maybe not?

Meanwhile, I love [name]Tom[/name] but can’t see myself saying [name]Thomas[/name] much at all. Same with [name]Jacob[/name] ([name]Jake[/name] would be what we called him). [name]Andrew[/name] I like best as a full name, and while I hate [name]Andy[/name] I could deal with [name]Drew[/name] down the road if that happened. [name]Ryan[/name] would be ryan but I had not realized how many girls were being named that!

[name]How[/name] bad would it be to have a “[name]Daniel[/name]” and a kid who goes by a nickname?

[name]Daniel[/name] and [name]Tom[/name] (or [name]Jake[/name], or [name]Drew[/name]) sound fine together, I think. It makes [name]Daniel[/name] seem older and perhaps more serious. Other people may start calling [name]Daniel[/name] by [name]Dan[/name] though, especially if they meet [name]Tom[/name]/[name]Jake[/name]/[name]Drew[/name] first. But you can always just correct them, and that will likely be the end of that.
