Our baby girl is due in just four weeks. I had really wanted to have her name nailed down before she was born, but it feels like we’re still largely at square one. We probably need to meet her to officially name her, but I’d like to have some names in mind when the time comes, so we’re not going in with nothing. But… it’s hard.
. I prefer names that begin with vowels; husband doesn’t have a preference.
. Nothing that starts with a hard K sound or ends in -on (to avoid similar sounds with the last name)
. Nothing super common or super weird - we like “different” in that she won’t go to school with 5 other kids with her name, but we’d like something that’s an actual, recognizable name that won’t illicit weird looks. And our last name is boring, so the first name can’t be too extravagant, anyway.
. I’d prefer the name didn’t end in an “ee” sound
. Her middle name will probably be a family name, though I’m not sure what yet. Maybe [name_u]June[/name_u].
. We have a son named [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m], so I’d rather our daughter’s name didn’t also begin with a W.
We’d had [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] picked out for [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] if he’d been a girl. It’s still my favorite name and about the only name we can both say that we really like, but now my husband thinks it’s too close to my niece’s name (which is [name_f]Isla[/name_f], but spelled differently so it looks closer to [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] on paper), and he doesn’t want to use it. Neither of us like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
Our short list of maybe names consists of:
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
Husband suggested [name_f]Thea[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f], both of which I’m pretty “meh” about. I like [name_f]Freya[/name_f] but I feel like it’s a little clunky, maybe, and not as feminine as I would like. [name_f]Thea[/name_f] sounds too much like a nickname ([name_f]Theodora[/name_f] and [name_f]Althea[/name_f] are no-gos). I suggested the other three, which he’s pretty “meh” about, so we don’t really have anything solid to work with. My personal favorite is [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] (with [name_u]Rory[/name_u] or [name_u]Story[/name_u] as nicknames), but Hubs isn’t convinced.
Other names I’ve suggested that Husband vetoed: [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Cybil[/name_f], [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], [name_u]Finlay[/name_u], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Elora[/name_f], Azaela, [name_f]Athena[/name_f]
Names Husband suggested that I’ve vetoed: [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]
We both like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] but feel it’s too popular (he likes [name_f]Olive[/name_f], but I don’t), as well as [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], but he has a close relative named [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], so that’s out too.
Any suggestions? It was stressful for me not having a name picked out for our son when he was born. It caused me a lot of anxiety right after giving birth, and I’d like to avoid having to go through that again, if it’s possible. Hubs likes Eastern European names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know of any that are fairly straightforward for spelling/pronunciation that we may like?
Thank you!!
