Due in July, Need opinions!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Nameberries! This is my first time posting, although I’m constantly on here reading about names. We are due in [name_u]July[/name_u] with our first - a boy - and are having a hard time coming up with a solid list of first name choices. We decided not to discuss names with our friends or family, because I’m indecisive and don’t want their opinions to sway how I feel about a name. That’s why I’m counting on you, the experts, for help! We tend to like old man names, and the ones we like are unfortunately becoming trendy. Here are the names we have both agreed on so far:

[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] - We both love this name, but it’s becoming SO popular and I don’t like that.

[name_u]August[/name_u] - This was my first choice before we were expecting (and is still my husband’s first choice), but I’m due at the very end of [name_u]July[/name_u] and worry I’ll have him in [name_u]August[/name_u]. Is it weird to name a baby [name_u]August[/name_u] if he’s born in [name_u]August[/name_u]? [name_u]August[/name_u] is our anniversary month, which is one of the main reasons we love it. It also seems to be getting more popular.

[name_m]Leo[/name_m] - My favorite right now, but our last name is Leav1tt. Does [name_m]Leo[/name_m] Leav1tt sound like a cartoon character? Not sure how I feel about alliteration.

Any and all opinions and new first name suggestions are welcome! Thank you!!

I love [name_u]August[/name_u]! [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] would be my second choice

I love these names and I’m also worried about how popular [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is becoming. Ultimately though I think you should go for it if that’s what you love most! [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] is one of my favorite combos. I think [name_u]August[/name_u] stands on its own as a name so it wouldn’t be weird if he were born in [name_u]July[/name_u] or [name_u]August[/name_u].

I love [name_m]Leo[/name_m] too but I don’t think it works with your last name (a bit like a cartoon character, you’re right).

I adore [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] (as a stand alone name and a nickname), and [name_u]August[/name_u]. I used to feel neutral about [name_m]Leo[/name_m] starting to like it. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] make handsome combos.

Maybe [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], if you’re not convinced on just [name_u]August[/name_u]? I like both. [name_m]Leo[/name_m] Leav!tt does not bother me either, it’s not [name_m]Levi[/name_m] Leav!tt.

[name_u]August[/name_u] is cute! I think it’s fine to name your child after the month he is born in. I also think [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] are also great! I like the suggestion of [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. You could also use [name_u]Theo[/name_u].

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]August[/name_u]. It’s one of my favourites for our baby, but my husband isn’t sold. I don’t think it would be weird to name him [name_u]August[/name_u] if he is born in [name_u]August[/name_u] (from all the blogs I’ve read about the name - many! - you’re going to get questions about it either way).

I also really like [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. But I agree with you that the alliteration can be tricky. You have to make your own decision, but I’ve personally ruled out all of my favourite D names, simply because of the “[name_f]Dee[/name_f]” sound of our last name.

[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is also adorable, with a great nn possibility in [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. It’s not the MOST popular name I’ve ever heard. Plus, I think you need to make your decision based on if YOU love the name. My husband’s has one of the most common names in our area (he had 3 others in his class) and he still maintains that it never bothered him in the least growing up (he thinks it’s a problem that adults create).

Best of luck and congrats!

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I am starting to feel better about using [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] or [name_u]August[/name_u]. I do love the combo [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u], just not sure I want to use [name_u]August[/name_u] as middle if I have another boy down the road

I also love the suggestions of [name_m]Otto[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m].

Thanks again!

I was joking with my husband the other day that based on the trajectory of names I hear at the playground, within a few years, 100% of boys will be named [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. So yes, I think it’s getting extremely popular.

But popularity isn’t the worst thing. It’s still a good name with history, substance, a good sound and appealing nicknames.

I think from your list I would go with [name_u]August[/name_u]. I don’t think it would be strange for an [name_u]August[/name_u] to have an [name_u]August[/name_u] birthday.

[name_m]Leo[/name_m] is a fine name and the alliteration isn’t a huge problem, although I can see why it would cause second thoughts. Another potential problem is that, said out loud, the full name sounds a bit like [name_u]Lyle[/name_u] [name_m]Lovett[/name_m]. Not a bad association, but hard to not hear once you’ve said it.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], but I don’t like [name_m]Leo[/name_m] with your last name. I also think it would be odd to name a baby [name_u]August[/name_u] in [name_u]July[/name_u] or [name_u]August[/name_u], but it would be perfect for a middle.

[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] L.
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] L.
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] L.
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] L.
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] L.
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] L.
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] L.

dizzy, I think you’re right. I’ve been hearing [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] A LOT lately. I can’t decide how much it would bother me to have it become hugely popular. My husband doesn’t care about popularity, as long as we love the name. He’s the normal one  I never would have thought about [name_u]Lyle[/name_u] [name_m]Lovett[/name_m], but I’m really glad you did! This is exactly why I decided to post! I think [name_m]Leo[/name_m] is out :frowning:

knnames, I am starting to strongly agree about not liking [name_m]Leo[/name_m] with our last name. I really like your suggestions of [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u]. I will talk those over with hubby.

Does [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] automatically lead to nn [name_m]Fred[/name_m]? I’m not a fan. Any other nn for [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] that could work?

Sorry if I’m not responding correctly. Not sure if I can tag people in my responses? If anyone has any tips for responding in the forums please let me know. Thanks for all the responses! Keep them coming

You could call a little [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_u]Red[/name_u], [name_m]Derick[/name_m], or [name_m]Rick[/name_m], though I personally don’t mind [name_u]Freddy[/name_u].

I really like the suggestion of [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. I definitely don’t think he would have to go by [name_m]Fred[/name_m] (although I think [name_m]Fred[/name_m] is actually pretty endearing)
