[name_m]Just[/name_m] popping by to say I love the name [name_m]Granger[/name_m] and I don’t think it’s a terrible choice at all! It is a bit unusual, but fits in perfectly with current naming trends, and I can’t see why it would cause your son any trouble.
He might get [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] comments, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near the same as if you named him [name_m]Severus[/name_m] or [name_m]Albus[/name_m] or even [name_m]Potter[/name_m]!
[name_m]Granger[/name_m] is rustic, cool, and the perfect blend of buttoned-up and just a little wild.
I don’t see anything wrong with [name_m]Granger[/name_m] (prefer this spelling). I did immediately think of [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], but that’s not even a bad association.
If you love the name then go for it! He will certainly make it his own.
Personally find it to be soft but still manages to have a nice boyish sound, I like it and don’t find it to be ugly at all. If I heard it used I’d think almost nothing of it, to be honest.
My takeaways -
I’m not a harry potter fan at all (have read most of the books when I was like 12 but uuugh already) so I couldn’t care less. However, real fans are likely to bring it up in passing (but also thinking it’s more likely the parents to even care to comment on it. Guessing kids will be less likely to even notice or care as time goes on)
People have character names sometimes and this is some random last name of a character. She doesn’t go by her last name iirc so…whatever.
Don’t give yourself too much stress since it could be a girl in there afterall
Might get some hate for this one but…I’m thinking many regular reddit users are a bit niche in their preferences and maybe a tad…umm…rude in my very little experience and tbh i don’t know people in my regular cirlce of friends/family who frequent reddit so…they’re not really my type of crowd if you know what I mean?? (AKA I don’t care for their opinions)
popping in to agree with the sentiment of most posters that [name_m]Granger[/name_m] is not ugly, nor will using it doom your son.
it is incredibly associated with HP for me though. my first thought when I hear the name is Malfoy referring to [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] by her surname (Granger). as in, that’s how my brain reads the name, in his tone and accent. im not a HP fan but I have read the books and seen the movies so I am quite familiar with the franchise. it would absolutely cross my mind that [name_m]Granger[/name_m] was used in reference to [name_f]Hermione[/name_f].
It’s really not that bad. If you like it and tell your son why it’s special then that’s what matters. It would be a problem if it sounded like something bad or had a bad association, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
It gives me the vibe of [name_m]Hunter[/name_m], [name_m]Hudson[/name_m], [name_m]Gage[/name_m], [name_m]Grey[/name_m], etc.
I really like the name Granger! It instantly reminds me of Hermione in HP (but I’m a fan and she’s a great character so it’s not negative at all) I’d almost definitely bring up HP thinking y’all were fans and if it angered you it would be pretty awkward. That’s something to think about as fans will prob try to bond with you over a shared love for HP since it’s really the only association I have with the name.
Personally for me the only reason I wouldn’t add it to my top 3 list is because the word “anger” is in the name, otherwise I think it’s great so if that doesn’t bother you, you should definitely use it!
A top 3 name for my baby due Feb (if they’re a boy) is Grover, nn Grove (like a grove of ) It has the same feel as Granger just a little different.
Grover is in sesame street so if you care about that it’s something to consider. I personally don’t care. I’ll prob even buy him Grover stuff (my son Marshall has like 4 Marshall from Paw Patrol dolls in his room from family )
Everyone has different views on whether associations are okay for them or not! I don’t mind them at all as long as they’re not bad ones. But if there is a strong association I recommend you embrace it with positivity when brought up - and if not you should probably steer away from the name.
I like granger it reminds me of a hunter, quigley, fisher, colter/ [name_m]Colten[/name_m], dalton, [name_m]Dawson[/name_m], like a rugged country boy feel
Grange/ Gage/ gray could be a nn
I love [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], but it took me a minute to make the connection because I was thinking of a country boy name and not hermione
I think it’s very sweet and not super overwhelmingly common and plus plus honoring a family member!
[name_m]Granger[/name_m] feels very cowboy-ish to me even with the [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] association. I believe there’s a current country singer called [name_m]Granger[/name_m] also. With surnames so popular as given names, I think [name_m]Granger[/name_m] will fit right in.
