Due in October, no girl's name picked yet (long)

[name]Hi[/name] everyone, long time reader, first time poster… I apologize in advance for the length of this post but I can sure use some naming help.

My husband and I are expecting our first baby this [name]October[/name], and although we’ve had our boy’s name selected even before we started trying for a baby, girls’ names have been far more elusive for us. We find out the gender of the baby next week, so perhaps we’re worrying for nothing and it will end up being a boy after all, but we want to be prepared either way.

So here are a list of names I like, along with comments about what might be holding me back from making it THE name. Please feel free to combine names to come up with first-middle combos that I might not have thought of, or suggest other names that would pair well with the names I have listed here!

By the way, our last name starts with a B and rhymes with “the fun yak”… yes I’m serious, lol, it’s Russian.

[name]Amelie[/name] - this was our name until hubby realized it sounds very close to [name]Emily[/name], the name of a co-worker he hates. Middle name would have been [name]Rose[/name] because we found out I was pregnant on [name]Valentine[/name]'s [name]Day[/name], aww.

[name]Annika[/name] - love this but since our last name ends in “ak” I wonder if the K-sounds are too much?

[name]Arabella[/name] - this was the name of my wedding dress, lol, and it sort of stuck with me. But I don’t really want to be caught up in the [name]Isabella[/name]/[name]Bella[/name]/[name]Ella[/name] trend. (my username is ironic

[name]Astrid[/name] - don’t know why I like this, but I do. I dig Scandinavian names even though I’m Italian and hubby is Russian. Is it too harsh sounding? Too much potential for teasing with the “As” beginning?

[name]Aurelia[/name] - I only like this if it’s pronounced Oh-REHL-i-a, not Oh-REEL-i-a. Otherwise it sounds like “Oh REALLY-a?!”

[name]Avery[/name] - I used to love this, now I think it’s way too trendy/unisex for me.

[name]Freya[/name] - again, a Scandinavian name I like. I can’t think of a middle name to go with it to save my life though. Also, I dig that she’s the Norse goddess of love, again because of the [name]Valentine[/name]'s [name]Day[/name] thing.

[name]Hazel[/name] - I like this for a little girl but I wonder if it transitions into the teenage years gracefully?

[name]Isadora[/name] - my husband’s #1 pick. I’m not too keen on the NN’s [name]Izzy[/name] or [name]Dora[/name] though

[name]Isla[/name] - love, and I lived in [name]Scotland[/name] for some time so I like the Scottish roots. Need help with a middle name. But [name]Isla[/name] is actually the letters of my first name rearranged… pure coincidence, don’t want people to think that’s why I chose the name.

[name]Marina[/name] - love it, pretty sure my fisherman dad would love it too, lol. Nice that it has both Russian and Italian roots

[name]Noelle[/name] - this is my default middle name, it seems to flow well with a lot of names on my list. But it means [name]Christmas[/name], and baby is due in [name]October[/name]. Is that weird? Hubby hates it for this reason.

[name]Sigrid[/name] - like it, again worry that it’s a bit harsh sounding though. Maybe an ultra feminine middle name would lighten it up?

[name]Violet[/name] - like it mostly as a middle name, I’m not sure it sounds very good as a first name with our last name though. I think [name]Aurelia[/name] [name]Violet[/name] would be pretty.

So there you have it, our current short list… though I’m sorry it’s so long  Please work your magic, Nameberries!! =)

Thanks!! <3

Personally, I really like the sound of ‘[name]Freya[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]’. (If your name is an anagram of ‘[name]Isla[/name]’, possibly it is also a common nn for [name]Elisabeth[/name]?) I like scandinavian names too, and for me, I like pairing them with a classic or gaelic name - it seems to soften them up a bit.

I really like your idea of ‘[name]Aurelia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]’. I think that combo is beautiful. As far as I know, [name]Aurelia[/name] is pronounced ‘ah-rehl-ee-ah’, or at least that’s how I say it. So I think you’re okay there.

Anyway, those are the two names that stuck out to me. All of your choices are really pretty, though. Good [name]Luck[/name]!

Of your ideas I REALLY like (although they are all great names):
[name]Astrid[/name]–All names have teasing potential. I think this name would be fine
[name]Aurelia[/name]–I never knew some people said uh-reel-ya. I think [name]Aurelia[/name] softens your last name and is so gorgeous and feminine.
[name]Hazel[/name]–I think a teenage [name]Hazel[/name] would be super cool and sweet.
[name]Marina[/name]-I also like that it incorporates both heritages.

My favorite is probably [name]Hazel[/name].
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Isla[/name] “The Fun Yak”
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Marina[/name]
or
[name]Aurelia[/name] Solvig
or
[name]Astrid[/name] [name]Freya[/name]

GL!

I love [name]Astrid[/name]! I doesn’t strike me as harsh at all. I agree it may have teasing potential, but I still love it. It would certainly work as a middle name.

Here are more combinations to consider:

[name]Marina[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Hazel[/name]

[name]Astrid[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Astrid[/name] [name]Violet[/name]

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Violet[/name]

[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Violet[/name]

[name]Sigrid[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]

[name]Love[/name] [name]Freya[/name], [name]Astrid[/name], [name]Aurelia[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]!

I love your list  all the names on it are so pretty. I don’t think you can go wrong no matter what you choose.

[name]Annika[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] (probably my favorite combination)
[name]Arabella[/name] [name]Violet[/name] (really pretty too. I also like [name]Arabella[/name] [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Arabella[/name] [name]Sage[/name], [name]Arabella[/name] [name]Gray[/name], [name]Arabella[/name] [name]Poppy[/name], and [name]Arabella[/name] [name]Grace[/name])
[name]Isla[/name] [name]Marina[/name] (there is something about this combination that I like. It sounds like a 20’s movie starlet name or something like that)
[name]Freya[/name] [name]Astrid[/name] ( I really like this combination too, I think [name]Freya[/name] is super girly and where it isn’t over-the-top I think [name]Astrid[/name] is a great accompaniment to the girlyness idk if that makes sense)
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Avery[/name]
[name]Sigrid[/name] [name]Noelle[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name] [name]Noelle[/name]

I think that [name]Freya[/name] [name]Rose[/name] sounds cute
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Isla[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Isla[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Viola[/name]
[name]Finley[/name]/[name]Finlee[/name]
[name]Riley[/name]/[name]Rilee[/name]

Really like [name]Marina[/name]. Would have used it ourselves, but the last name is all wrong.

I really love [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Freya[/name]! So lovely!

I’m really loving [name]Marina[/name] ! I like
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Noelle[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Astrid[/name] (similar to stella maris, like star of the sea ?)

[name]Just[/name] for the record, I’ve never heard anyone pronounce [name]Aurelia[/name] any other way than Oh-REEL-i-a, so you might find yourself correcting pronunciation a lot.

I really liked the name [name]Marina[/name] and the fact that it had roots in both of your heritages. I also like [name]Isla[/name] and don’t think most people would know or care that it’s an anagram of your name. As a pp mentioned, [name]Isla[/name] [name]Marina[/name] would make a great combination. [name]Marina[/name] also goes with [name]Rose[/name] for the [name]Valentine[/name]'s day connection, although only as [name]Marina[/name] [name]Rose[/name] and not as [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marina[/name].

If you’re not a fan of the -bella naming phenomenon I wouldn’t go with [name]Arabella[/name] even if it has a cool reference to your wedding dress.

[name]Astrid[/name] is a great name but I admit it does lend itself to embarrassing nicknames. What about [name]Ingrid[/name]? Similar sound and just as acceptable in an English speaking place. [name]Freya[/name] is a good Scandinavian name though - I heard it is extremely popular in [name]England[/name] right now, surprisingly enough.

I wouldn’t push for [name]Noelle[/name] if your husband hates it. What about another French name with the emphasis on the second syllable, like [name]Sabine[/name], [name]Simone[/name], [name]Delphine[/name], [name]Clemence[/name], etc? Or perhaps [name]Adele[/name] might sound similar enough to [name]Noelle[/name] for you but not sound too close for your husband to think of [name]Christmas[/name].

I like [name]Isadora[/name] and if you’re concerned about nicknames maybe you could appease your husband by using it as a middle name?

I also really like [name]Hazel[/name] and have no problems imagining a little girl [name]Hazel[/name], a teen [name]Hazel[/name] or an older woman [name]Hazel[/name].

My favorites are

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Marina[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Freya[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Ingrid[/name]/[name]Astrid[/name]/[name]Sigrid[/name] [name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Ingrid[/name]/[name]Astrid[/name]/[name]Sigrid[/name] [name]Marina[/name]

Many of your names end in -a so it’s actually quite difficult to combine them in many ways.

The ones I think work best from your list:
[name]Arabella[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Noelle[/name] and [name]Violet[/name].
If your name is [name]Lisa[/name], then I wouldn’t go with [name]Isla[/name].

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions, Berries! This will take some time to go through in detail  One name in particular jumped out at me and the more I said it aloud, the more it made me smile: [name]Sigrid[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]. So I’ll be pitching that one to the hubby for sure. I’ll keep everyone updated!!

I did mention it to my best girlfriend today, though, and the reception was lukewarm at best, lol (surprising because she has an 8-month old girl with an unusual Nordic name too). She thought [name]Sigrid[/name] sounded like a man’s name because she associated the “[name]Sig[/name]” prefix with the captain from Deadliest Catch… but that’s sort of silly to me because that’s like saying you can’t name a girl “[name]Robin[/name]” because you know a man named “[name]Rob[/name]” But maybe her concern is valid? She said to me “[name]Just[/name] be prepared that people might call her [name]Sig[/name] or Siggi for short.” But I actually think those are cute little nicknames… nothing she would officially go by, of course, but cute to call her informally. [name]Siri[/name] is supposedly the “official” nickname for [name]Sigrid[/name], but that might be a stretch, and people will no doubt accidentally call her “[name]Suri[/name],” right?

[name]Annika[/name] - I like [name]Annika[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Astrid[/name] - love this
[name]Freya[/name] - love this one, too
[name]Hazel[/name] - I think it’s just gorgeous!
[name]Isadora[/name] - what about [name]Sadie[/name] as a nn? I love [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Violet[/name].
[name]Marina[/name] - another name I love

I can’t choose just one. They’re all gorgeous.

[name]Sigrid[/name] sounds somewhat masculine to me, I like [name]Ingrid[/name] better, but if you love it that is all that matters. From your list my favorites are [name]Annika[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name]:
[name]Annika[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] or [name]Annika[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Marina[/name] or [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Arabella[/name] (I think [name]Hazel[/name] would be great for a teenager!)

[name]Just[/name] for the record, I’ve never heard anyone pronounce [name]Aurelia[/name] any other way than Oh-REEL-i-a, so you might find yourself correcting pronunciation a lot.
Then I guess my or-eel-ya is wrong.

[name]How[/name] would you feel about [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Isadora[/name]?

Not a fan of the double middle names to be honest, but if I was, that would be a lovely one

We’re finding out the baby’s gender this Friday (argh can’t wait!!) so we’ve tabled the name discussion for now, although I did tell hubby “I searched for the name [name]Sigrid[/name] on Facebook to see what a grown-up woman with that name looks like, and they’re all frickin’ gorgeous.” lol. Everyone tells me I’m having a girl, so if it turns out that way on Friday, we’ll have so many wonderful names to choose from thanks to everyone’s suggestions =)

[name]Sigrid[/name] is very interesting, but I must admit to favouring [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Isadora[/name]. I know plenty of people who are never nicknamed, so I don’t think you have to worry about [name]Izzy[/name]/[name]Dora[/name], but you could try [name]Sadie[/name].

[name]Isadora[/name] [name]Rose[/name], perhaps, for the [name]Valentine[/name] connection? In the same vein, you could try [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Fleur[/name] or [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Florence[/name], or the name of a famous lover such as [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Daphne[/name] or [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Thisbe[/name] (too much IS?).

But I think the PERFECT name for you is [name]Freya[/name] [name]Valentine[/name]. Two connections to the date and wonderful flow, plus two unusual but stunning, feminine names.

Good luck! [name]Auburn[/name]

I quite love [name]Freya[/name] from your list, and think it would be adorable on a little girl. I personally am really not a fan [name]Sigrid[/name], it sounds quite masculine and I also don’t particularly like the end “rid”. But anyways, if you love it you love it and don’t listen to me!
