My best friend of ten years passed away unexpectedly on [name]Tuesday[/name]. I’m due with my second son in a couple of weeks and was planning to name our new baby either [name]Leo[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] or [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name]. I’m sure some of you have seen me posting before, agonizing over these two names and trying to find a strong third contender
So now I find myself wanting to honor my friend. Her name was [name]Nicole[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. I know there are a bunch of options for us if my husband and I decide to use her name for our new baby. I think she would have been very honored by this and I’m hoping I’ll be able to do it, but we’re so emotional right now that it’s hard to know what to do.
If we do use her name, I don’t want to do straight up [name]Nicholas[/name] because it’s too popular. I was thinking [name]Nico[/name] or [name]Nikolai[/name], and keeping [name]Maxwell[/name] as the middle name (because her middle named started with an M) or using [name]Griffin[/name] as the middle name (because her last name started with a G).
I’ve always liked the name [name]Nico[/name] and thought about using it even before she passed. The first little boy our family ran into after we found out about our friend’s death happened to be named [name]Nikolai[/name] (and then ten minutes later we ran into another boy named [name]Nick[/name].) We could also use [name]Nicholas[/name] or [name]Nikolai[/name] as his middle name: [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nikolai[/name] Sweet, [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name] Sweet, etc…
Any words of advice? Is this even a wise idea? I know that right now we’re overwrought and thinking so much about the loss of our dear friend, so maybe I’m not thinking straight. Should I stick with [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Griffin[/name]? Or go for [name]Nico[/name]?
I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s terrible to have such bad news of a death of a loved one when you’re almost due to give birth to a new life. It’s a very emotional time for you and it’s quite natural that your first reaction would be to honour your friend [name]Nicole[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. I know you’ve spent so much time, energy and care in choosing your final two names, [name]Leo[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] Sweet (my fave) and [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] Sweet. For me, [name]Nico[/name]/[name]Niko[/name] is just a nn so I prefer [name]Nikolai[/name]. I think I like [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] Sweet a little better than [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Griffin[/name] Sweet. Another nn for [name]Nikolai[/name] is [name]Nikita[/name]. The more popular [name]Nicholas[/name] can be used in the middle as well (eg [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name] Sweet or [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name] Sweet). One word of caution: if you decide to choose [name]Nikolai[/name], your may find your name options for future children more limited in scope than if you stuck with [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Griffin[/name]. [name]Nikolai[/name] is the Russian version of [name]Nicholas[/name] so it’s a bit more exotic in feel. What would you choose for [name]Niko[/name]'s siblings? [name]Just[/name] some food for thought. [name]May[/name] I suggest that you take all of your names to the hospital with you and decide what name is the best “fit” for your baby. He may look more like a [name]Nikolai[/name] than a [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Griffin[/name]. Take care and let us know how everything goes!
I’m so sorry you’ve lost your friend. That’s just awful, and especially hard at this time, I’m sure. I think honouring her would be a lovely thing to do and the best option from your list, [name]IMO[/name] is [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] Sweet, it sounds wonderful.
I am sorry for your loss. I am sure your friend [name]Nicole[/name] would be so flattered if you honored her.
I love [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] sounds awesome together and [name]Niko[/name]/[name]Nico[/name] is such a fresh take on [name]Nick[/name].
So very sorry for your loss. It’s wonderful that you plan to honor your friend. I would do the same.
I agree with previous posters…I love [name]Nikolai[/name]. I’m a big fan of just plan [name]Nicholas[/name] as well (I think it’s a classic, and also very sweet this close to [name]Christmas[/name]!). But between [name]Nico[/name] and [name]Nikolai[/name], I say go with [name]Nikolai[/name]. It feels much stronger and more substantial as a name, in my opinion. [name]Nico[/name] is a great nickname, though.
I’m so sorry for your loss, and I think this would be a wonderful way to honour your friend, and also to make sure that she’s still involved in the life of your second son.
As both [name]Nico[/name] and [name]Nikolai[/name] are great names (I personally prefer [name]Nikolai[/name], as you then also have the option of [name]Nico[/name] as a nickname) I am sure you wouldn’t regret this. As handsome as both [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Griffin[/name] are, a name with such a deep, personal meaning will always by more … rewarding? fulfilling? I can’t quite find the right word … in the long run, I think. The only thing I would caution is to make sure that her family are comfortable with the idea, but other than that I am sure you would not regret it.
[name]Both[/name] [name]Griffin[/name] and [name]Maxwell[/name] sound great with [name]Nikolai[/name], but in my opinion the flow of [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] is just that little bit better. Very handsome, and once again, I’m sure your friend would be delighted.
My thoughts are with you at such a terrible time,
[name]Auburn[/name]
I am sorry for your loss. I think it is wonderful that you will honor your friend. I completely agree that the name will mean so much more to you in the long run.
I love [name]Nico[/name], and I think it is substantial enough to stand on its own. However, I love the name [name]Nikolai[/name] so much – why not have the best of both worlds? You can name him [name]Nikolai[/name] and call him [name]Niko[/name]…[name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name]! I think [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] Sweet is outstanding! My second choice would be [name]Nico[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] Sweet. Actually, if you would never plan on calling him [name]Nikolai[/name], then I would just name him [name]Nico[/name] and make it less confusing! No point in giving him a name you never intend to use (if you are only using [name]Nikolai[/name] as a way to get to [name]Nico[/name]). But you really can’t go wrong with either name.
I’m sorry for your loss. I really love [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Griffin[/name], but it would be more meaningful to honor your friend. I prefer [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name], nn [name]Niko[/name].
I’m sorry to hear about your friend. I think its great that you want to honor her. I love the sound of [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Griffin[/name]. [name]Niko[/name] could still be the nn, then you get both names. [name]Nicolai[/name] is also a accepted spelling, if you prefer [name]Nico[/name]. Whatever version you choose, it would be lovely.
