We are expecting baby number two in [name_u]July[/name_u] and I am realizing that names are coming much more difficult this time around (and I thought I had a lot of criteria and extensive lists last time around ;)). Our first son is [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m] Karrer. The middle is after my father in-law.
Current criteria includes; Recognizable, but not overly popular, would like to avoid names with multiple common spellings (ie [name_m]Caden[/name_m], [name_m]Caiden[/name_m], etc.), avoid names that sound similar to others (ie [name_m]Caden[/name_m], [name_u]Jaden[/name_u], [name_u]Hayden[/name_u] etc). I like names that have nicknames but want to avoid names that have common nicknames with other names. Names with meaning or at least do not have negative meanings would be nice but not required. I notice that I like a lot of old fashioned names, but that is not necessarily a requirement.
My current, very early list is as follows:
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Abraham[/name_m] or [name_m]Abram[/name_m]
[name_m]Byron[/name_m]
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u]
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m]
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] (maybe mn)
My wife really likes [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], but since we already have a [name_m]Felix[/name_m] I just can’t do it. We also have liked [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], [name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], and [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], but they are off limits for one reason or another.
I am focusing on first names for now. We don’t really have any family inspiration this time so I am not sure where we will go with a mn.
Such a great list! My personal favorites from this list are [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and I think they match well with [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. The nickname [name_u]Sully[/name_u] is so cute and underused.
The only names I’m not too keen on are [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] and [name_m]Byron[/name_m]. [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] seems to be a different style than the others, and isn’t my taste. For the other two, [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] sounds like giddy up (am I pronouncing it correctly?) and [name_m]Byron[/name_m] reminds me of [name_m]Bryan[/name_m] and I automatically think it’s dated, even though it may not be.
Other suggestions:
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] or [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Henrik[/name_m]
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]: I love the nn [name_m]Art[/name_m], but I think it has a more middle-age-guy vibe than [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
[name_m]Abraham[/name_m] or [name_m]Abram[/name_m]: I love [name_m]Abram[/name_m] with [name_m]Felix[/name_m]! [name_m]Bram[/name_m] is a great nn
[name_m]Byron[/name_m]: Not a fan
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]: I like it a lot!
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]: Too long next to [name_m]Felix[/name_m], imo. Mn maybe?
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]: I don’t like it too much…
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]: I like it!
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]: I don’t love it
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]: I love it, but nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is shared with all the [name_m]Fin[/name_m]- names.
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u]: It looks and sounds similar to other names.
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]: I like it, but I don’t think it fits with [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]: Same
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]: I really like this one too!
[name_m]Orson[/name_m]: I like it
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]: Same
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]: I don’t love it with [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]: I like it a lot
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m]: I like it
My faves with [name_m]Felix[/name_m] (as a fn) would be [name_m]Abram[/name_m], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and [name_u]Orion[/name_u].
[name_m]Abram[/name_m] [name_u]Everett[/name_u] or [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] feel like great combos!
My favorites with [name_m]Felix[/name_m] would be [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_m]Abram[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m] and [name_u]Kieran[/name_u]. [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] is very handsome too next to [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Jeffery[/name_m].
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
I like [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] and [name_m]Soren[/name_m]. They have been added to the list. We have discussed some more and [name_m]Silas[/name_m] was vetoed hard lol. We also know someone that just had an [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] so cross that off too. After letting some ideas sit I have been focusing on: (Still nothing jumping out at me)
Wife likes O names but I am not really too fond of any. I am a bit concerned that some of the names that I am keen on have been shooting up the charts lately (ie [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m]) and I wonder how far they will climb. I also seem to be focused on nn ideas more than I did with [name_m]Felix[/name_m] (we call him [name_f]Fe[/name_f]/[name_u]Fee[/name_u] for short). Any other thoughts/ideas? Wife suggested using [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] as mn (my name). I am not sure if I like that…
I also really like [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_m]Lucius[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], [name_u]Francis[/name_u] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] from your vetoed list. Maybe as a middle if you don’t care for [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]?
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]-Are you in the UK? If yes, than [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is very fresh and wearable. In the US however it’s still a little middle aged.
[name_m]Abraham[/name_m] or [name_m]Abram[/name_m]- not my favorite
[name_m]Byron[/name_m]-ditto
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]- really like but it’s quite popular next to [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]- love it
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]- love it
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]-REALLY love it
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]- see [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]- not a fan, very overused in my opinion.
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u]- [name_f]ADORE[/name_f]. It’s on my list as well
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]- not crazy about this
[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]- nice
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]- OK. Not my style.
[name_m]Orson[/name_m]- Adorable!!!
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]- like
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]- I like this a lot
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]- not my favorite
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] (maybe mn)- No. Very common/popular imo
I don’t get why [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] wouldn’t be good?
You have excellent taste! I will say that I think surname names recently popularized as first names, like [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], sound trendy and are likely to sound dated in a few years (in the way that [name_m]Caden[/name_m], [name_u]Jaden[/name_u], [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] et al are starting to now).
My favorites from your list are [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_u]Everett[/name_u], and [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], interesting names with the same kind of history and timelessness as [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
Thanks! We are in the US. [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] are the main characters in the TV show The Odd Couple. I think it is too strong of an association.
