For some reason a friend of mine is dead set on naming her daugther Eclipse [name]Emmeline[/name].
I really don’t know what to think of this pretty unusual name.
What do you think? have you met a girl named Eclipse?
To me it sound beautiful and mystical, but still…I have my doubts about it.
*UPDATE: Decided! We don’t like Eclipse as a first name…
For me it’s quite out there, but personal style aside, I think it would be difficult to live with this name. It’s fine if your friend’s daughter grows up to be an artist or a musician or something creative, but what if she dreams of being a lawyer or business woman? Eclipse also doesn’t seem to offer any nicknames that would be suitable in less mystical environs. [name]Emmeline[/name] Eclipse on the other hand seems fine yet still maintains the good qualities you like.
You’ve lured me in with one of my favorites, [name]Emmeline[/name], but I have to say that I cannot support Eclipse as a first name. It isn’t just that the name is so far from my own naming style - vintage classics, like [name]Emmeline[/name] - but more the fact that eclipses, though immensely spectacular and rare, terrify me!
You see, when I was little, I was always told that, during an eclipse, I could never look directly at the sun. Obviously, looking directly at the sun during a normal day can cause immense retinal damage, causing debilitating impairments in vision and potential blindness. Usually, the sun is so bright that it is near impossible to look directly at it - this is a feature that protects us from blinding ourselves every day. However, during an eclipse, so much of the sun is covered - by the moon - that it is easier, and more tempting, to look directly at the sun. Unfortunately, it is just as dangerous to look at the sun during an eclipse as it is on any other day. I don’t mean to launch into this huge lecture on why eclipses are dangerous, as I really don’t know enough to speak with assurance on the topic, but I’m merely trying to explain why the name gives me, personally, the chills - and not in a good way…
I did like the suggestion of [name]Emmeline[/name] Eclipse, though! If the baby’s mother is interested in celestial and astronomical events, perhaps some more options could be found by exploring star names, planet names, the names of planets’ moons, or other forms.
I think space is cool, astronomy and such, the universe… I don’t know why anyone would choose a name that means to block something, the sun! Hello new baby daughter, when you were born, it blocked the sun out of our lives. Not for very long, but still. You took our light away and the source of energy for all or most living things.
I also don’t like the way it sounds, but when people choose meaningful word names, that hardly ever seems to matter. “Clipsey” for short? It’s just an awkward thing to call someone, Eclipse. I just don’t like the sound - as a name - or the meaning - as a name. It seems to have some sort of “punch” as a spacey cool phenomenon kind of name, but I don’t think it’s that great in the reality outside the concept.
I actually think Eclipse is a really cool name, but only in the middle. As a middle name it’s cool and funky but hidden if the child doesn’t really like it. As a first name though, it’s just a little too much for me.
At least the daughter will have the middle name to use. [name]Emmeline[/name] is beautiful. Eclipse is interesting, but I think it sounds like a fantasy book/gamer name/.
I also vote [name]Emmeline[/name] Eclipse. I actually think it sounds quite pretty. And [name]Emmeline[/name] can always choose to go by Eclipse later if she wants. Best give the child the chance to go wacky if she’s that bold, as opposed to saddling a child with a name that’ll probably cause difficulty later.
And let’s face it – Eclipse will, at some point, cause the child some difficulty, one way or another.
When I read the title to your post “Eclipse [name]Emmeline[/name]?”, I thought you were asking if you should “eclipse” the name [name]Emmeline[/name] (that is, veto it, or cross it off your list). For this reason (that Eclipse could be a synonym for ‘veto’), I do not think it makes a good name. Would you name your kid Veto, Extinguish, or Erase?
Nah, I know she didn’t got it from Twilight. She despises the [name]Saga[/name]…Does any of you know if Eclipse has a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] conection? that might be the source of this whacky choice…[name]Don[/name]'t worry berries, I’ll convince her of not choosing Eclipse as a first name…
I love [name]Emmeline[/name] and I think that the child would be very happy with that name, on the other hand I think she would be ashamed of being called Eclipse. It is a dark kind of name with negative vibes.
Eclipse and [name]Elise[/name] are similar in look, so why not go for [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Elise[/name]?
It does sound better as a middle, but that does dampen the cool factor, doesn’t it? That’s my main problem with it: too cool. Sounds like a comic character - well, except that [name]Emmeline[/name] isn’t a typical comic book-y name.
[name]Every[/name] time I see a weird name like this, it stretches my limits. Maybe seeing Eclipse doesn’t make me brave enough to use it, but there’s probably another name I didn’t like before that I now will.
