It is a name made up by Game of Thrones, and I predict that eventually it will become a proper name (like how we always take names from literature - [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f], et cetera).
To me, [name_m]Ned[/name_m] (in the books/show) was someone who I admired for his bravery and honesty, yet also his devotion to his family, his friends, those who work for him and to himself. Definitely someone I wouldn’t mind naming a child after (even though I know he’s fictional).
But is GoT too recent for it to work or wait a while?
It’s always been on my GP list, but was unsure whether it should stay there.
Thanks
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f], you’re still a teenager, right?
If you’re a little while away from kids, then I reckon keep it on your list. By the time you’re pregnant it will have been long enough that it’s another [name_m]Ed[/name_m] name, I think.
I also think its a great name and I love [name_m]Ned[/name_m] and [name_m]Ted[/name_m] nicknames.
Haha, yeah. Maybe I’m just using that as an excuse
Many people are familiar with A Song of [name_m]Fire[/name_m] and Ice or Game of Thrones - so I think it’s well known, but wasn’t sure if it was ready yet.
Yes I am a teenager, and I hope I’m a little while away from having kids
Thank you. I thoroughly enjoy [name_m]Ned[/name_m] as a nickname, but wasn’t sure if that would be GoT overdo.
I like it. Nothing wrong with literary names. Someone has to be the first to start using them. And it’s much more useable/wearable than [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f], which I wouldn’t have thought useable/wearable at all!
I have never seen or read any of GoT, so the reference is fully lost on me and I’ve never heard of Eddard as a name until this post. I agree that we often take names from literature, so I wouldn’t dismiss it on that basis, and it looks to me like it could have been a surname that crossed over. I do imagine it would often be mistaken for [name_m]Edward[/name_m] - like someone would see it on a class list and think there had been a typo.
Well I love the Eddard from the books as well, but I loved the name [name_m]Eideard[/name_m] before I knew of the character. It’s still one of my favorite names but I would also be afraid of people making the connection to GoT. I would think [name_m]Eideard[/name_m] (a great Scottish version of [name_m]Edward[/name_m]) would be a good alternative. It’s certainly on my list!
I don’t like [name_m]Edward[/name_m] or any of it’s variations, made up or not. And Eddard sounds…dumb to me. I don’t like either the books or the show, but I agree that, since many names have been taken from literature, Eddard could most definitely be useable in few years.
I would love to see some of the names from ASOIAF cross over into the real world. Eddard works, definitely, but I think an Eddard would frequently have to deal with being mistaken for an [name_m]Edward[/name_m].
I would have suggested this too… I’m a big proponent of choosing any name that you really like.
I adore Endora and while it’s a made up name for Bewitched (yes I know she’s the annoying Mother in law, but she is also my favorite character with her love of life, her mischievous streak, and sense of grand adventure…) - people keep telling me they like th ename but “Bewitched”, and I keep thinking "I love the name - because of Bewitched.” lol. I don’t know if I’m explaining this correctly but just because something is a negative to one person doesn’t mean it’s not a positive to you. So Eddard being GoT or SoIaF might be a negative to many but a positive to you!
Also… keep it on your list for now, but who knows what you will like once you have kids. And, hopefully you won’t be having to do the whole kid thing alone - so who know’s what your partner will like as well. (I’ve been avoiding the mentioning of “Bewitched” and most definitely the viewing of the show around my husband. I’m trying to get him on board with Endora - he’s not a huge fan, yet - but I am certain the connect that I love will not be a positive in his book. Hopefully, he won’t think about it until then, and if I’m lucky he won’t google it either…lol).
I like the Uniqueness of this name. Since you are not needing a name now, keep it on your list.Sometimes a name is like wine…the more it ages the better it tastes.
