Edith or Eleanor - nickname help!

We’re expecting a baby girl in [name_f]July[/name_f] and we’re stuck on a name. Help!

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband lovvvves the name [name_f]Edith[/name_f], nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f]. I love the name [name_f]Edie[/name_f] but [name_f]Edith[/name_f] doesn’t “feel” like my daughter’s name. (And I definitely want a full name - not a nickname on the birth certificate.) I might be able to eventually warm to it but it’s not my favorite.

We definitely agree on the name [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] (I especially love that it has three syllables), but I am nervous about the inevitable and ubiquitous nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. It’s just too popular for me. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband has nixed [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] as alternate nicknames.

I know that [name_f]Edie[/name_f] isn’t a natural nickname for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] can we compromise? Is [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] with mn [name_f]Edith[/name_f] too much of a mouthful?

Or maybe [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] with a “D” mn? (E.D. = [name_f]Edie[/name_f]?) Not sure what that would be at this point, though… Suggestions welcome!

Help!

I absolutely [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. I think the nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is definitely avoidable. I was also going to suggest E.D. for you - I think that’s a perfectly natural way to get to [name_f]Edie[/name_f]! People get called “C.J.” so why not “E.D.”? Some suggestions:
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (I think my favourite!)
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f]

Other [name_f]Edie[/name_f] options:
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Edwina[/name_f]

Good luck!

I think [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is gorgeous and doesn’t need a nickname. I really detest [name_f]Edith[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Edith[/name_f], I think it would be so cute on a little girl. You could always put [name_f]Edith[/name_f] on the birth certificate but exclusively call her [name_f]Edie[/name_f]. That way you and your husband get what you want.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_u]Nori[/name_u], [name_f]Lena[/name_f] or [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]?

[name_f]Edie[/name_f] is one of my favorite nicknames. I have seen [name_u]Eden[/name_u] suggested elsewhere on the forums as a full name for [name_f]Edie[/name_f] (nms but thought I’d throw it out there). There’s also [name_f]Edita[/name_f]. Or if you don’t mind stretching it, Estrild, [name_f]Enid[/name_f], or [name_f]Evadne[/name_f].
