Edith?

Hey everyone…

I have been a big fan of NameBerry for the last year ever since I was assigned to write a story about baby names for a class of mine. I love reading the blogs, playing the games, and looking up the meanings of names. Lately I’ve really been feeling older names, giving them a new lease on life. A name that I heard recently was [name]Edith[/name]. I think its super cute. Its classic but unique. I certainly don’t know anyone named [name]Edith[/name]. I also think the nn [name]Eddy[/name] is cute. I was just wondering if it was too old? And does the nn work? Maybe I’m thinking too far out of the box. What does everyone think?

Thanks!

Oh, I love the underused name [name]Edith[/name] but my favourite nn is definitely [name]Edie[/name]. It’s a great vintage name and I would consider it along with [name]Agatha[/name]. [name]Agatha[/name] & [name]Edith[/name] ([name]Aggie[/name] and [name]Edie[/name]) - what a pair of gems!

Haha, I’ve actually thought about [name]Edith[/name] before. I think I really want to like it, but it still feels a little old lady-ish to me at this point. Maybe that will change, but for now I’d still like to see other people naming their daughters this. I’d love to met a little [name]Edith[/name]!

I like the idea of having a couple different potential nicknames handy, like [name]Eddy[/name] and [name]Edie[/name], because you don’t know what kind of kid you’re gonna get. I imagine an [name]Edie[/name] as sweet, creative, and a little girly, while [name]Eddy[/name] would be a great nickname for a little girl who’s a bit of a tomboy, vivacious and imaginative.

My mom’s best friend’s name is [name]Edith[/name] ([name]Edie[/name]), named after her mother, and she is around 60 years old. I have known her my whole life and have always considered this name really dated. Old fashioned, but not the comeback kind of name. I don’t like [name]Eddy[/name] on a girl, but [name]Edie[/name] is ok.

I really like [name]Edith[/name] but I prefer [name]Edie[/name] to [name]Eddy[/name]. I think it’s ready to come back (but then, I’m pushing to get my boyfriend on board with [name]Vera[/name] so I reckon almost anything could come back!)

Well, I am re-reading [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name] at the moment, and so I have been thinking that she would be rather a stylish namesake. But there is something about the ‘eed’ sound that I just find very unpleasant, so I can’t get behind a full revival.
Also, you know anyone considering the name is going to have to deal with grandma’s complete horror at the thought of their granddaughter being named after [name]Edith[/name] Bunker.

I love [name]Edith[/name], and it’s a top contender if I ever have another daughter. I don’t care for [name]Eddy[/name] much, but I don’t like masculine names, even just nicknames, on girls. Plus [name]Edie[/name] is so cool and stylish and unique, I don’t know how you could have an [name]Edith[/name] and pass on [name]Edie[/name].

Plus [name]Edith[/name] was my great grandmother’s name. Family names aren’t a huge priority for me, but it’s nice to have a good family name.

I thought it was an “old lady name” until I held a 4 month old with this name. Adorable! I can see it catching on.

[name]Edith[/name] makes me think of [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name]! Super cute and classy.

I think it’s a beautiful name. It was on the long list for my daughter (partner veto’d). It sounds really great - the long EE, then soft th. It’s really old, an ancient English name but not Aethelreda or Eadburga, but also suggests sweet old ladies, which I think is always a good thing.

I live in [name]England[/name], where all the sweet, old-fashioned names I always liked - [name]Alice[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Simon[/name] - are just…names. So for the vintage feel, you’ve got to dig a little deeper. [name]Edith[/name] (and [name]Edie[/name]) - perfect!

[name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] Bunker - what better namesakes could you want?
