I am in love with the name [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Elinor[/name_f]. I am uncertain which spelling I prefer. Which one do you prefer? Does either spelling have a different pronunciation to you? They don’t for me but I am curious if anyone pronounces them differently.
I think they both are legitimate, and I actually like [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] quite a bit, but I would probably use [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] even so because I think it would avoid hassle and confusion.
I like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] best i think, though [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] is also very pretty
I’d pronounce them just slightly differently
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]: [name_f]El[/name_f]-un-noor/[name_f]El[/name_f]-un-ah
[name_f]Elinor[/name_f]: Eh-lin -noor
I pronounce them the same, and I like them both. I’d use [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] to avoid confussion. I think when someone says [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Elinor[/name_f], I’d be more tempted to spell it [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].
My favorite spelling is [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] for the Tolkien reference, but of the two you’re considering, I prefer [name_f]Elinor[/name_f]. It’s got a lightness to it, where [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] feels a bit cumbersome to me. And, as someone else mentioned, there’s the [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] tie-in.
But I do think you’d be spelling it all the time. People will assume it’s [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].
I prefer the ea of [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. And it might make life easier as it’s the dominant spelling. But if you like the [name_u]Austen[/name_u] tie-in, use the i. I pronounce them the same.
My favorite spelling is [name_f]Elanor[/name_f]. but of those two, I think I prefer [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. I like the look of the ea, and it’s the more familiar spelling.
however, [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] has been growing on me. it’s very neat and pretty looking.
I think you can’t go wrong either way! [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is a very beautiful name!
[name_f]Elinor[/name_f]! I love this version: it’s clean and strong and a bit elfin, plus there’s the [name_u]Austen[/name_u] connection as pps have mentioned.
I pronounce both broadly the same: [name_f]ELL[/name_f]-uh-nuh. [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] is perhaps more [name_f]ELL[/name_f]-in-ore if I’m not being lazy, which I much prefer.
Agree that [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is the expected spelling of the name though, generally speaking, so you would probably get it quite a lot even if you chose [name_f]Elinor[/name_f].
Thank you everyone for your opinions. I am leaning towards [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] at the moment. Does anyone have any more opinions before I make my mind up?
I simply like how the [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] spelling looks vs. the [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] spelling, and also for us the big role model for our daughter is [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_m]Roosevelt[/name_m].
I pronounce both spellings the same: [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-nor (nor like neither/nor). A few people do pronounce the name [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-ner, which grates a bit, but not many people so far, thankfully!
I pronounce [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] with more of an “ih” sound while I pronounce [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] like “ella-nor”. I personally prefer the look of [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], but a lot could depend on the middle it was paired with. Both names are beautiful!
Like a couple of pps, I like [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] for the Tolkien reference. Of the two spellings you asked about, I prefer the traditional [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], although the [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] & Sense & Sensibility reference is very appealing. Either way it’s a very attractive name!
