So we have long loved the name [name_f]Electra[/name_f] but are afraid to use it because of the association with [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it is totally unusable? I do know someone in he 20’s with this name, I assume she was named before [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f] came on the scene.
I have no idea who this woman is and I love the name [name_f]Electra[/name_f]. ^^
We do too! It seems like such a powerful name! It reminds me of [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] as I think they are both powerful names for girls.
I think you’re fine to use [name_f]Electra[/name_f]. [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f] won’t be around forever and the newer generation might not even know who she is.
I don’t know who [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f] is but there is the [name_f]Electra[/name_f] complex.
[name_f]Electra[/name_f] in mythology plotted and helped murder her mother Clytemnestra. Her mother had murdered her father,Agamemnon because he had in turn killed [name_f]Iphigenia[/name_f], [name_f]Electra[/name_f]'s sister, and Clytemnestra’s daughter as a sacrifice to go to war. The fact that he brought home [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] the tragic prophetess of [name_m]Troy[/name_m] as a war “trophy”, probably didn’t help.
The Electra Complex is the female equivalent to [name_m]Oedipus[/name_m] Complex in Freudian psychology.
Then of course there there is a the [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] super hero [name_f]Electra[/name_f]. For whom this wonderful movie was made.
If you google images just [name_f]Electra[/name_f] this is the first page you get.
The name has a lot of baggage. To me an [name_f]Electra[/name_f] seems like a girl with daddy issues who grows up to be a professional dancer at a gentleman’s club. However in general I would say that if you really love the name and truly feel that it is the name your daughter should be for her whole life then you should name her that. ![]()
Good luck and congratulations. ![]()

Elletra the Italian version seems to cut back on a lot of the baggage while still being very appealing.
I think your daughter will make her name her own. [name_f]Electra[/name_f] is a classic and elegant choice. I dare say most people, especially in your daughter’s generation, won’t know any of the more troubling associations with the name. If you love it, use it!
I know [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f], the association wouldn’t bother me. I also know [name_f]Electra[/name_f] complex, a lot of baggage, I agree. But on the other hand, my strongest connection is the Pleiades. [name_f]Electra[/name_f]'s a star. It’s a shiny and beautiful name, imo.
I hate to be [name_f]Debbie[/name_f] Downer, but please do not name your child [name_f]Electra[/name_f]. She will be relentlessly teased. It sounds like a stripper name and [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f] is not a good association in my opinion.
[name_f]Electra[/name_f] sounds really vibrant, I quite like it!
[name_f]Electra[/name_f] is name with lot of baggage. It’s pretty and rather unique, but not a great baby name.
I do like [name_f]Electra[/name_f], but worry that it might be too much baggage for a child. However, I want to suggest [name_f]Elettra[/name_f] with the nn [name_f]Lettie[/name_f] as an alternative. The Italian version seems softer.
Maybe as a middle. I like it, but it would be a lot of baggage to carry as a first.
I agree with the messages above.
It’s a beautiful name, I don’t have any association with [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f], but it’s ‘heavy’ as a first name.
There was a crazy shetland sheepdog on my street while I was growing up and her name was [name_f]Electra[/name_f]… random association that is of no value to you, but that’s what I think of, haha.
I do really like [name_f]Elettra[/name_f], though. It’s a little more exotic in less of a “strip aerobics” kind of way. [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f] has obviously made a great name for herself in her branding and stuff, but I think a lot of people just think “Baywatch”, which is fine… but if it’s a concern, I think [name_f]Elettra[/name_f]'s a lovely alternative.
I agree with those who said this name has “too much baggage” associated with it. I do quite like the alternative version [name_f]Elettra[/name_f]. It’s a little softer, and [name_f]Lettie[/name_f] would be an adorable nickname!
I wouldn’t be worried about [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f]. But I would be worried about the association with the [name_f]Electra[/name_f] Complex (similar to the [name_m]Oedipus[/name_m] Complex.) Obviously, her kindergarten classmates are not going to be familiar with this though.
I don’t know who [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Electra[/name_f] is. I prefer [name_f]Elettra[/name_f] though.
I don’t know about all the, um, undesirable references, but [name_f]Electra[/name_f] sounds too much like the word electricity for me to like it.
