Is [name_m]Eli[/name_m] a name in its own right?
Or is it a nickname for names like [name_u]Elias[/name_u] and [name_m]Elijah[/name_m]?
Husband keeps suggesting this one so I thought I’d check with my round of experts [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know any [name_u]Elis[/name_u]? What are your impressions of this name? Any feedback and input welcome!
Definitely a name on its own since it is Biblical figure as well. I only know one [name_m]Eli[/name_m] though (he must be around 15 now I think). I like this name! It feels sweet and I think it will age well but I do think of it as a religious name.
To me [name_m]Eli[/name_m] is a Biblical name, and so a name in its own right. I don’t know any [name_u]Elis[/name_u] personally - where I live (UK), a lot of Biblical names like [name_m]Eli[/name_m] are less popular than they are in the States. I think it’s a handsome and distinctive name.
I think [name_m]Eli[/name_m] works either way. I know a handful. Some of them are just named [name_m]Eli[/name_m] while others use it as a nickname. I don’t really have a preference on it either way but I do think that, even though [name_m]Eli[/name_m] is just three letters long, it is perfectly fine on its own.
As far as impressions, I’ve always thought of this as a wise-sounding name. Sort of like [name_m]Solomon[/name_m]. What I love about [name_m]Eli[/name_m] is that it still holds the wisdom connotation while working brilliantly for a little boy or for a grown man. I mean, I can easily picture a male of any age by this name (unlike something like [name_u]Brayden[/name_u] or, on the opposite end, [name_u]Neil[/name_u]). It does also feel very biblical, but if that isn’t your thing, it still doesn’t feel like a dealbreaker. I know boys of this name from all sorts of backgrounds and belief systems. It really does work for anyone!
