Elijah VS Elisha

I was just wondering which full name for [name_m]Eli[/name_m] you prefer.

I personally like [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] better, since it’s uncommon and has some kind of charm to it for me.

[name_m]Both[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] are names of biblical males ([name_u]Elisha[/name_u] was [name_m]Elijah[/name_m]'s apprentice), but [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] tends to be used on females as well ([name_m]Just[/name_m] like [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]).

Of the two, [name_m]Elijah[/name_m].

I like just [name_m]Eli[/name_m] though. It’s a Biblical name in itself. And as far as uncommon forms, I like [name_m]Elazar[/name_m]/[name_m]Eleazar[/name_m] or [name_m]Eliezer[/name_m] best, or Elchanan/Elkhanan.

[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] by far

Definitely [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] imo

[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] is my fave

I like both, but I like [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] best.

[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] is more familiar, and people will most likely know it’s a boys name. A lot of people will probably try to pronounce [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] like [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] and guess its wearer to be female, probably because the most prominent [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] in the public eye that I know of is [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m]. So that’s unfortunate.

I do really like [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], though.

Edit: After thinking about it a bit, I think Eli Manning might be the most prominent Elisha in the public eye. The only problem is that most people don’t know his full name. He might be someone to point to if you decide you want to go with Elisha, though.

I agree with previous comments. I prefer [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] as it is securely masculine. I love the nickname [name_m]Eli[/name_m]. [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], like nono said, would probably be assumed to be a girl and pronounced like [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] by someone who didn’t know better.

I know a female [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] so [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] by far.

I always found myself liking [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] for a boy. I thought it was striking, handsome and much more special than [name_u]Elisha[/name_u]. And I still think that.

And I would use it, if my aunt hadn’t used it for her daughter in 2010.

So I prefer [name_u]Elisha[/name_u]

I prefer [name_u]Elisha[/name_u]. One female celebrity doesn’t make it a girls name. For boys, it’s usually “e-LYE-shuh” and girls version is usually “e-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-shuh”. [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] is rarely chosen and it would be a far bolder and more memorable choice than [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] (the “jah” is pretty harsh sounding to my ears). [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] has never been a favourite “[name_f]El[/name_f]” name for me. Like [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] is a Biblical name that sounds masculine enough for a boy.

Def [name_m]Elijah[/name_m].

I love both but [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] is better. [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] Cubert (or whatever her name is) is not a big enough celeb to turn this into a girl name

Or someone who was familiar with the Hebrew. I’ve never heard [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] used as a guy’s name by a non-Hebrew speaker, and in Hebrew it does have an “ee” sound in it, like [name_f]Alicia[/name_f].

I think it sounds fine el-ee-sha. If el-LYE-shuh it will always be mistaken for [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] when heard aloud? And [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] is so popular.

I prefer [name_m]Elijah[/name_m]. It took me reading the comments to know [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] was like e-lye-shuh. I assumed it was [name_f]Alicia[/name_f]. I also think I’m not the only person who would think that.

I prefer [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], but I do think the vast majority of people will be more familiar with it as a feminine name, so if that bothers you I wouldn’t choose it. I’ve kind of always been drawn to masculine names like [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_u]Hilary[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], etc. that are now predominantly used for females. They seem so much more attractive to me as male names!

I would pick [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] over [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], because every time I’ve heard [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] has been on a girl. I also really like the earlier suggestion of [name_m]Eliezer[/name_m] for [name_m]Eli[/name_m].

[name_u]Elisha[/name_u]'s uncommon-ness draws me to it.
