Elimination Thread: Lasses

Hello lovelies,
I’m Vix, I used to be an active member (@mclevine) but I have been lurking around since my daughter’s birth. However, my hubby and I are planning to start TTC soon, and it got us both back into naming.
We’re huge geeks - history, literature, music, mythology, [name_m]Monty[/name_m] Python, you get the idea. Our daughter is called [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and we want to find a name as beautiful as hers for our future little one.
I really need your help narrowing down our list. It’s pretty long, but we’re still open to suggestions if you have any. Bonus points if it is connected to music (hubby is a musician) or works in Russian/Ukrainian.
Elsinore
[name_f]Yseult[/name_f]
[name_f]Halcyone[/name_f]
Hespera
[name_f]Azenor[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
Euterpe
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f]
[name_f]Ligeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Medea[/name_f]
[name_f]Parthenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
Rosmerta
Polyxena
[name_f]Sappho[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
[name_f]Olwen[/name_f]
Galadriel
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f]
Faerydae
[name_f]Endellion[/name_f]
Ceinwen

You can divide our names into likes and dislikes, rank, comment, eliminate - anything goes. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you can work your berry magic! (And there is a boys version, too!)

I really like:
Elsinore (so glad I’m not the only one who thinks it makes a nice name), [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], [name_f]Azenor[/name_f] and [name_f]Yseult[/name_f]!

Names I like, but only for middles:
[name_f]Endellion[/name_f], [name_f]Leontine[/name_f], [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] and [name_f]Olwen[/name_f]

Names I dislike:
Galadriel, Faerydae, Euterpe

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f] back Vix!

With [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], I love [name_f]Halcyone[/name_f] (gorgeous name, and with the e takes away the pills association), [name_f]Ligeia[/name_f], [name_f]Olwen[/name_f], [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f] and [name_f]Leontine[/name_f].

The ones I dont like are Euterpe, [name_f]Astraea[/name_f], [name_f]Parthenia[/name_f], Rosmerta, Polyxena and Ceinwen.

I really like Faerydae but only as a middle. Same goes with [name_f]Medea[/name_f].

I really love your taste! I just want to suggest one name that I actually just found today: [name_f]Harmonia[/name_f]. It’s of Greek origin - she was the goddess of order and daughter of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] and [name_m]Ares[/name_m] ([name_u]Love[/name_u] and War). It also ties in nicely with music as of course it sounds just like harmony. Actually, come to think of it [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] is a pretty name too. [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Harmonia[/name_f] sound like such cute sisters though.

Like: Elsinore, Hespera, [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], & [name_f]Olwen[/name_f].

Dislike: Euterpe, [name_f]Ligeia[/name_f], [name_f]Medea[/name_f], [name_f]Sappho[/name_f], & Galadriel.

Like: Elsinore, [name_f]Yseult[/name_f] (but prefer [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]–are they pronounced the same?), [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f], [name_f]Olwen[/name_f], [name_f]Leontine[/name_f]

Dislike: [name_f]Halcyone[/name_f] (too wordy), Hespera, [name_f]Azenor[/name_f], Euterpe, [name_f]Ligeia[/name_f] (seems like teasing potential), [name_f]Medea[/name_f] (too tragic), [name_f]Parthenia[/name_f], Rosmerta, Polyxena (sounds like a chemical), [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] (too tied to lesbians), Galadriel (too Tolkein)

Your tastes are way more adventurous than mine, so those are just my thoughts.

Other ideas:
[name_f]Hildie[/name_f] (for [name_f]Hildegard[/name_f] von Bingen and maybe [name_f]Brunhilde[/name_f])
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Violetta[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] (patron saint of music)
[name_f]Apolline[/name_f] (slightly more wearable than [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f] to me)

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f] back! I’ll keep:

Hespera
[name_f]Azenor[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
Galadriel
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f]

I love how unconventional and mythological your names are! Great list.

My biggest piece of advice is don’t use [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] as a first name. I’m a lesbian and you should know that the name [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] is extremely associated with lesbian culture and history. The term “lesbian” actually comes from the fact that [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] lived on the island of Lesbos. If I met a girl named [name_f]Sappho[/name_f], I would assume her parents were lesbians, and if they aren’t, it strikes me as a little odd. It’s a great middle name option though! [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] was an amazing poet and historical figure. [name_m]Just[/name_m]…maybe not the best first name option, since she may come to resent that association over time. But again, it would be an excellent middle name choice.

Here are my other thoughts:

Names I like -->

Elsinore - Very cool name! I love this as a first name idea. It’s a great spin on the more common [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], while having its own history and flair.

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] - I like this name, but the mythology surrounding it is a bit negative, isn’t it? If I recall correctly it means something along the lines of “lady of darkness” and she was [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]'s main nemesis (as you know). But it could be a cool name to use as a reclamation of female power. Kind of reminds me of the name [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], with a similar dark-yet-powerful vibe.

[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] - I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] this name. I think it’s very underused. It sounds a bit like the Spanish word estrella, which is cool because they both are connected to the meaning of stars/constellations. 10/10 yes to this name!

[name_f]Sappho[/name_f] - Like I mentioned above, I love this as a middle name, but do not suggest it as a first.

[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - I’ve always personally preferred [name_f]Athena[/name_f], but I really like the idea of switching it up and using the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] version! [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] McGonagal breathed new life into this name, and I think both the [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] and the character would be fabulous namesakes.

Galadriel - I love this as a middle name! Galadriel was an awesome character in LOTR, and would be a fabulous namesake. However, I don’t see it working as a first name. It feels too character-specific. Maybe if you had a more modern feeling nickname?

[name_f]Leontine[/name_f] - I prefer [name_f]Leona[/name_f] or [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], but this is a cool name. I don’t love it, but I like it.

Names I dislike, either because the pronunciations just feel too weird/forced/awkward to me, or because I don’t like the meanings/sound of it -->

[name_f]Yseult[/name_f]
[name_f]Halcyone[/name_f]
Hespera
[name_f]Azenor[/name_f]
Polyxena (wouldn’t this mean “many xena?” Like many strangers? Or multiple Xenas? Too weird for me)
[name_f]Ligeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Olwen[/name_f]
Faerydae
Ceinwen

Names I don’t feel strongly about either way – >

Euterpe (Cool mythology association, but feels a bit stiff)
[name_f]Medea[/name_f]
[name_f]Parthenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
Rosmerta
[name_f]Endellion[/name_f] (I would really like this if I could get past the fact that it starts with the word “End”)

Good luck! [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to message me if you want to discuss names in more depth, since I have a similar appreciation of these kinds of names :).

I adore:

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Olwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f]
[name_f]Endellion[/name_f]
Ceinwen

I think [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f], & [name_f]Leontine[/name_f] goes best with [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]!

First, I just wanted to say that [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] is a lovely name, and your list is fab, so I’m sure whatever you choose will be wonderful. I’ve left reasons for most of my placements but not all, so if you have any further questions, feel free to ask! (And I’d love to know [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]'s middle names because this list is so fab!)

Names I love for you:
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f] - I love this name and when I saw it on your list, I immediately thought it would be the perfect sister for [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - this has the same strength as [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], and I think “Nellster”/"[name_f]Nell[/name_f]" and [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] would be adorable!
[name_f]Endellion[/name_f] - I love how unusual the sound of this name is and I think [name_f]Endellion[/name_f] would be a fab sister for [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f].
Hespera - this has been moving between the ‘love’ and ‘like’ lists. I think the name is elegant and striking and really unusual and I love it for you, but it gives off a very different vibe to [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I find [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] soft and warm, whereas I find Hespera a little witchier and spikier. I think they could be sisters but they aren’t obvious ones.

Names I like for you:
Elsinore - I’m not hugely familiar with this name, but I like how familiar it feels due to the ‘elsie’ start and the similar to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ending. This would be in my ‘love’ list but it is less traditionally ‘name-y’ than [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and I think it could be mistaken as a made up smoosh of [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elinor[/name_f].
[name_f]Yseult[/name_f] - it’s such a fab name, but it feels quite harsh next to the soft [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f] - I’ve known 2 people with this name, so it feels very usable to me, but I’m not hugely keen on the matching ‘ia’ endings, as if you had a 3rd daughter, you might feel locked into a theme. I think [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Apolline[/name_f] would be wonderful though.
Rosmerta - the only time I’ve heard this name was in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], but it gives off a very friendly and loving vibe to me. It is quite a lot more unusual though.
[name_f]Olwen[/name_f] - I think this is a funky name, but the sound is much more unisex than [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] so I don’t think they’re a fab match. It would be a great middle though.

Names I think only work in the middle:
[name_f]Halcyone[/name_f] - due to pronunciation problems
[name_f]Azenor[/name_f]
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] - the style feels too different to [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Parthenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sappho[/name_f] - for the reasons @silversky109 said. It’s so linked to lesbian culture, that it’s best left in the middle at the moment if you have to use it. I love the sound though, so maybe something like [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] or [name_f]Sapphira[/name_f] could work instead?
[name_f]Ligeia[/name_f]
Faerydae - a little too romantic and fantastical to work in the first name spot.

Names I’m not a huge fan of:
[name_f]Medea[/name_f] - not the kindest of characters
Euterpe
Polyxena
Galadriel - I’ve watched one [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings film, but even so, this feels so linked to LOTR that I don’t think it works, unless you want to tell everyone you’re huge fans!
Ceinwen - so hard to pronounce and it sounds quite whiny [name_f]IMO[/name_f]

With [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] I like:

Elsinore
Hespera
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
Rosmerta
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]

[name_f]Halcyone[/name_f] is alright, but for some reason I like [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] a bit more? [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is okay too, more a fan of [name_f]Estrella[/name_f] spelling personally. Same with [name_f]Yseult[/name_f], vastly prefer the spelling [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]. [name_f]Medea[/name_f] is kinda iffy, the sound is nice but the association and pop culture references put it just a little off for me.

I do not like [name_f]Sappho[/name_f], [name_f]Olwen[/name_f], Galadriel, or Faerydae.

Other ideas:

[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f]/[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
Salacia
[name_f]Halia[/name_f]
Ananke/Anance
Hemera
Clymene
[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]
Lysagora
Alectrona
Idyia
Bona Dea
Carmenta
[name_f]Clementia[/name_f]
Deverra
Lua
Moneta
[name_f]Atalanta[/name_f]

Wow, you have a really interesting style - I love it!

Like: [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f], [name_f]Astraea[/name_f], [name_f]Endellion[/name_f], [name_f]Halcyone[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and Rosemerta

Dislike: Euterpe, Faerydae, Galadriel, Hespera, [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] and [name_f]Yseult[/name_f]

My favourite with [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] is [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - they both have a really unusual vintage vibe that I think is very charming, and the nicknames Nellster and [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] and/or [name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_f]Mira[/name_f] work great together.

Suggestions: [name_f]Antigone[/name_f], [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]

Names I think go best with [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]:
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] & Elsinore
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] & [name_f]Leontine[/name_f]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] & [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
Faeryday

My top five are Elsinore (with the nickname [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]), [name_f]Endellion[/name_f], [name_f]Yseult[/name_f], [name_f]Leontine[/name_f] and [name_f]Olwen[/name_f]!

Ps. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to find someone else who likes Cornish names!

My dd is [name_f]Iseult[/name_f]
All my children have names from mythology so we’re on the same page here!

I love Galadriel. Nn gal, gala, gallie all lovely too.

I also love Elsinore and [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f].

Galadriel is my favourite though.

Other possibilities:
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Leda[/name_f]
[name_f]Dido[/name_f]
Tinuviel
[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]

Wow, what a cool list!

[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Nell[/name_f] is beautiful. My favourites for her sister are:

Elsinore
[name_f]Yseult[/name_f]
[name_f]Azenor[/name_f]
Hespera
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
Rosmerta
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f]

I adore [name_f]Endellion[/name_f] but to me the sounds are a bit too similar, plus the logical nn is [name_u]Dell[/name_u]/[name_f]Dellie[/name_f] so again a bit too close.

I wouldn’t use [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] (too teasable), Galadriel (too LOTR) or Faerydae (too frilly/insubstantial to me, sorry!)

I would suggest:

[name_f]Demelza[/name_f] (I actually know sisters called [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Demelza[/name_f], but the rhyming nn thing may be a problem again)
[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
Proserpine
[name_f]Nimue[/name_f]
Niniane
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Arianwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Araluen[/name_f]
[name_f]Tatiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Titania[/name_f]
[name_f]Eponine[/name_f]
[name_f]Apolline[/name_f]
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Ferelith[/name_f]
[name_f]Anstice[/name_f]
[name_f]Ismene[/name_f]
Hecate
[name_f]Hannelore[/name_f]
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f]
Vespertine
[name_f]Svetlana[/name_f]
Merewen

Our styles are quite different, but from your list I love [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] and [name_f]Olwen[/name_f]. I’m not really a fan of Euterpe, Polyxena or [name_f]Sappho[/name_f].

I don’t have much time right now, but I saw Faramir on your boys list and I see Faerydae here, might you like [name_f]Ferelith[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] “[name_f]Nell[/name_f]” and [name_f]Ferelith[/name_f] “[name_f]Fae[/name_f]” would be the most darling of sibsets!

I like [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]. [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and [name_f]Leontine[/name_f] are okay. The rest are either difficult to express or spell.
