Elin (EE-LYNN) SPELLED ELYIN ? PLEASE HELP

[name]HI[/name], I have an ill grandmother who loves the name [name]Elin[/name]… I would be happy to let her choose the name… But, I really dont like the spelling [name]Elin[/name]… Its pronounced EE-[name]LYNN[/name]. What do you think about Elyin? Please give me feedback. Thanks in advance.

I’m sorry to hear of your grandmother’s illness. I think the Swedish spelling of [name]Elin[/name] is beautiful in its simplicity. I like it better than the similar [name]Ellen[/name]. Sorry but I don’t find Elyin very appealing with the “y”. When I saw it, I wanted to pronounce it “ellie-in”. I think this spelling may give you more pronunciation headaches than [name]Elin[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Helen[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Elena[/name] or [name]Elaina[/name] as alternatives to [name]Elin[/name]? I guess you could always spell it [name]Elyn[/name].

I would stick with the traditional spelling. If I saw the name Elyin, I would automatically pronounce it el-yin.

Given all of the press that [name]Tiger[/name] Woods’s wife has received, I would think more people are familiar with the name, [name]Elin[/name], as it is.

I agree that [name]Elin[/name] is beautiful as is!

Find out why she loves [name]Elin[/name]. Is it because she is Swedish and wants her grandchild to have roots to her native country? Does it remind her of a dear friend? Sometimes knowing the reason will help you decide. Spelling it ‘wrong’ will not have the roots and if it is because of a friend, maybe there is a middle name that you like better. [name]Elin[/name] has grown on me. Maybe because I picture [name]Tiger[/name]'s ex and she is very pretty and remained classy through her whole ordeal.

Elyin would end up being pronounced [name]Ellie[/name]- in or EE- [name]Lion[/name]. I would not go with that spelling. It is too phonetically incorrect.

[name]Elin[/name] is lovely as is. I would pronounce Elyin as [name]EL[/name]-yin or [name]EL[/name]-ee-in not EE-lynn.

[name]Elin[/name] is lovely, and I think most Americans are now familiar with the pronunciation. I would pronounce Elyin with the y sound, like [name]Ell[/name]-yen… not like Ee-lin at all.

[name]Hi[/name], my name is [name]El[/name]ín, however it is NOT pronounced as ee-lynn. This is a common mistake that many Americans make because this name is supposed to be spelled with an accent mark over the /í/ to make the long e sound NOT ee-lynn. Doesn’t that sound so much prettier? I love my name!

Pronunciation of [name]El[/name]ín: [eh-leen] /E/ has a short sound vowel (as in ‘bed’). /lín/ has a long sound vowel (as in ‘me’ or ‘bee’).

If I saw Elyin, I would pn it el-yin, not ee-lin. I have apparently been saying it wrong all along. I prefer ee-lin, but that’s probably because I don’t like change. I could get on board with the proper pn, though.

My name is [name]Elin[/name] (originally from my Icelandic great aunt) and my Canadian and American friends pronounce it ee-lynn (as you would). Growing up though NO [name]ONE[/name] pronounced it correctly and I was constantly spelling it. It has been a wonderful change more recently as it has become slightly more popular that I don’t have to spell it each time. I think adding that extra ‘y’ would lend to your child spending a lot of time spelling it and having people mis-pronounce her name growing up. [name]Elin[/name] is still fairly uncommon in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name] so choosing it alone is special and she will be joining a fairly small group of us
