[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! My husband and I are expecting our third baby in [name_f]October[/name_f] and while we don’t know the gender yet (we considered going team green, but I’m not sure I can wait that long), we’ve been discussing names. High up on our girls list is [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as double barrel first name, with a separate middle name altogether. I’m conflicted on how to do this though and am looking for opinions.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] - Probably the easiest option, though I fear that people will just assume [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is the middle name and leave it off. There’s also the option of having the first name be [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as the first middle name, that way if she wanted to ditch the double barrel as an adult, it wouldn’t be a problem.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - I think this would be the best way to signal that the name is double barrel but I’m worried that the hyphen could be annoying to have to write out over time.
ElizaJane - My least favorite option. I think this looks nice for certain double barrel names but here it just looks very smooshy.
My personal favorite is [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. You can try with a second middle too, but I guess that if you introduce her as [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] all the time people will get use to it.
I have two first names and a middle. My names aren’t hyphenated. I would say go without it. It adds less confusion for standardized tests and stuff like that.
People will always assume that Jane is her middle name, and you’re most likely going to have to correct people a lot, which honestly isn’t that big of a deal. People always assume Louise is my middle. It’s very annoying but I still love my name and wouldn’t change it at all. I’d say just go with whatever you love most!
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. In the tech era hyphens can actually he a real headache with regard to documentation and filling out forms online.
ElizaJane is just not appealing aesthetically. With compound names, it generally looks better to only have the beginning of the name capitalized ([name_f]Maryanne[/name_f], for example) but that doesn’t really hold up for Elizajane.
Since classroom rosters don’t typically list middle names, it should be pretty intuitive that [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is her first name, same goes for applications and then when she gets older since the forms clearly mark where first, middle, and last go.
I prefer [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f]. It seems to be best at conveying the double name imo. As someone who works with kids, I’ve seen administrators accidentally lop off the latter half of a double barrelled name before, thinking it was a middle.
I personally would use Eliza Jane. If that’s just what you call her, I’m sure people will follow suit. Eliza-Jane is fine, but double barrelling names with a hyphen is not for me. I would not use ElizaJane.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f].
This is the easiest option that clarifies that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is not to be left off.
I would not feel obligated and probably would not say [name_f]Jane[/name_f] if a hyphen wasn’t present.
I think I would go with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. A hyphen might cause more confusion when it comes to documents, with some allowing the hyphen and some not. I think the way to clear it up is to always introduce her as [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and people will follow along!
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] here as well. I just think hyphens look kinda messy and other posters have talked about how some forms will drop it anyways. I have a friend named [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] (fn mn) and she goes by both. Sometimes people will call her just [name_f]Anne[/name_f] but it’s a simple correction and it doesn’t happen more than once.
Where I live, double barrel names are always hyphenated and (as far as I know) it doesn’t create any problems. 99% of the time the second name isn’t used anyway. I think [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f] creates the desired effect best.
However, [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] does give the flexibility for your daughter to change her mind in the future. Personally, I would put [name_f]Jane[/name_f] in the middle ([name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] MN) and just call her [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
I’d use [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. It’s your favourite, looks best and you could always add a second middle to show that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is part of the first. Plus a lot of forms give you option to write down the name by which you are known and that could always be filled in as [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
