Oh dear, how could I miss that!? I only just realized, that [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] don’t work together at all!!
That’s awful because I love both names to bits…
I have a third alternative. What about:
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] & [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Birgitta[/name_f]
Nicknames could be [name_f]Lizzi[/name_f] and [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] when they’re little and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] when they’re little grown-ups.
Vote for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] & [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Birgitta[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] & [name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_f]Birgitta[/name_f] would be a close second.
I prefer your boys name of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] more than [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] so I’m going to vote for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ([name_f]Leonie[/name_f]) and [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] ([name_f]Birgitta[/name_f]).
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] & [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Birgitte[/name_f].
Thanks for your votes and answers, berries.
I think I will have to mull it over some more. My first choice names for either gender are [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] & [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] for now. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is pretty much set in stone, as it is the only girls’ name, my husband rates 9/10. The next ones are only 6s and 7s. Also I have loved this name forever!
For a boy’s first name we have 4 main choices: [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and [name_m]Ludwig[/name_m]. My husband likes [name_m]Richard[/name_m] most while I tend towards [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. [name_m]Ludwig[/name_m] is a bit of a guilty pleasure of ours. I think on a real baby it would be a bit [name_m]OTT[/name_m]. For second name the choices are [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Clemens[/name_m] and [name_u]Michael[/name_u]: his grandad, my grandad and my father respectively. I love [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and [name_m]Clemens[/name_m], but I’m not really a fan of [name_u]Michael[/name_u].
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] & [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Birgitta[/name_f]
Thoughts that popped into my head:
[name_f]Leonore[/name_f] isn’t pronounced the same in english as it is in german and so isn’t [name_f]Louise[/name_f].
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce the names? English or [name_m]German[/name_m]?
Because if you pronounce [name_f]Louise[/name_f] english whilst living in Germany, it will sound like [name_m]Luis[/name_m].
[name_f]Leonore[/name_f]'s last “e” isn’t silent in Germany either.
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s name might get butchered, since the “th” is hard to pronounce for non-english people.
Anyway, now to your names:
My favourite set is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] & [name_f]Leonor/name_f.
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] I like in English but not it [name_m]German[/name_m].
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] I find too masculine.
From your signature I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] would fit in very well with your choices. Especially since it is pronounced the same in both languages.
Dear [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f],
thanks for your insightful reply. I can see from the names in your signature that we have similar tastes. About the pronunciation: I would let my children choose how they want their names pronounced. When I lived in [name_m]Britain[/name_m] I was often called [name_f]SHAR[/name_f]-lot whereas I’m shar-LOT-uh in Germany. It didn’t really bother me.
I love the way [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] is pronounced in [name_m]German[/name_m] and English equally: lay-oh-[name_f]NOR[/name_f]-uh and [name_u]LEE[/name_u]-oh-nor. With [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] there is of course the issue of s/z. I prefer the spelling with z as I like a softer sound instead of a sharp ss in the middle. Although this spelling is not very common [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would probably be pronounced as [name_m]German[/name_m] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] over here: eh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-za-bett. Again, I like both pronounciations.
Now for [name_f]Louise[/name_f]: I really like the simplicity and elegance of this name and the fact that it means “famous warrior”, but you are right that there is an issue with the [name_m]German[/name_m] pronounciation. The name [name_f]Luise[/name_f] is very popular here right now (Top 20) and is pronounced loo-EE-zuh. I am afraid that people will pronounce [name_f]Louise[/name_f] the same, when I actually far prefer the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation. This is one major concern I have with that name.
The name [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] I like because of the x and because to me it sounds strong and regal, but I am not 100% convinced on it.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] I have loved ever since reading the [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl book, plus it means mighty warrior (again with the warrior chicks :p). However, an acquaintance has recently named her child [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and although I we’re not very close, I get flooded with information about little [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] from common friends and facebook. It feels like this name is hers now…
Another name I really like is Swedish [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] (lyn-NAY-ah). When I was little this was the name of my doll and I still have a very tender spot for it. But with this name I’m afraid that it doesn’t fit in with my other favourites: [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and… [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]??
Well, still plenty of time left to ponder this dilemma…
[name_f]Dotti[/name_f]
I wish it were but sadly my name isn’t [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], I am very uncreative with username choices, so I just picked my favourites…
I’m from Germany too, that’s why these thought entered my mind in the first place.
I think the pronunciation of the names should be clear before he / she enters the world, as there will be years of saying the name out loud before the child can pick which one he or she likes better.
What do you think about [name_f]Leonora[/name_f]? As it is pronounced the same in both languages it might be an alternative for [name_f]Leonore[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (the english name) but am glad that the [name_m]German[/name_m] part of the family would use E-lee-sa-bett (pr.).
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] is indeed very scandinavian but it would fit in wonderfully with [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Ludwig[/name_m] and [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] (sp).
Maybe not so much with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] but definitely with just “[name_u]Theo[/name_u]” (how would you pronounce [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]?)
It’s a shame that you can’t use [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], it is a gorgeous name.
Anyway, I really like the names from your signature and don’t think you can go wrong with any of them
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
I prefer the English pronunciation of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] but I wouldn’t be too cross if people said [name_m]Teodor[/name_m]. In general, since living abroad I’m not so fussed with pronunciation anymore. I see it as a sort of nickname when people call me SHARlott.
The “official” pronunciation of our children’s named will be English though because they will have an English last name.
I voted for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Birgitta[/name_f] (best combo of the bunch, so classy and sweet!) and [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. I don’t like [name_f]Louise[/name_f] at all, I have to admit, though I love [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]. [name_f]Louise[/name_f] just feels stuffy and stiff to me. I like the [name_m]German[/name_m] pronunciations of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] (though [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] might be better in the context) as well as the English ones. I think it’s fine to have two pronunciations- I know many people with ethnic names have their names pronounced differently at home than at school/elsewhere and most don’t mind.
