Always loved the name [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but after talking with some people it seems most think it would hardly get used. Apparently 4 syllable names usually get nicknames for day to day use. I like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] but it’s not the most common NN for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]…that would be either [name_f]Liz[/name_f] or [name_f]Beth[/name_f] ([name_f]Beth[/name_f] is OK, [name_f]Liz[/name_f] not so much). But for years I really liked the name [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Are these concerns on the mark?
I wouldn’t worry about it. I have known [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s who go by [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], Bethie, [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I think if you really want her to be called [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] then she will be. Though I would say you shouldn’t really hate any of the nickname possibilities because you never know what she may decide she likes later on!
If you or your daughter make it clear that she doesn’t want a nickname and only wants to go by [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or only [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], I doubt anyone will insist on calling her something else. I know two [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s who simply go by [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
I definitely don’t agree. I have two friends who are both [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] all the time, no nicknames, so I don’t think that nicknames are inevitable for this name. Now, that being said, I think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has some super cute nicknames and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is 100% doable
I think you are overthinking it. I don’t think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] needs a nn.
I know an (adult) [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who only goes by her full name. I know an (adult) [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who only goes by her full name, and that’s even more of a mouthful!
I’ll also add that, as common as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is supposed to be, we’ve not yet met another small one. We’ve met some Charlies, and a surprising number of Eleanors, as well as a few Noras. But no other [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], much less [name_f]Libby[/name_f]!
Potentially…most little girls would go by [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] etc…I don’t think her full name would be used until older and I guess she’d have to say it’s the full version, otherwise people will be inclined to shorten, same with [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and vic.
I agree that [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] doesn’t really need a nn. I am binge-watching a show lately that has an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who is the main character of the show, but she really doesn’t get a nickname at all. Some of her sisters sometimes call her a nickname ([name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] or [name_f]Beth[/name_f], I think), but to her friends, her fiancé, etc., she’s always just [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (which I find really refreshing honestly!).
My favorite nns for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] are [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], and [name_f]Lily[/name_f], and if I didn’t want [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] all the time, I’d probably gently encourage others to use whichever one I ended up using most of the time, if they tried for a nn I wasn’t fond of (like [name_f]Beth[/name_f]).
Good luck!
If it’s any consolation, of the three Elizabeths I’ve known, two have gone by just [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and no one automatically nicknamed them. The other sometimes went by [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
As an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], I can assure you that most people respect your wishes when it comes to your name. Some people will straight up ask what your name preference is and others might assume a nickname. [name_m]Just[/name_m] correct them and there should be no issues. I’ve certainly never had anyone argue with me over what to call me.
At work, I am [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and they respect that. My friends call me [name_f]Bette[/name_f] and occasionally my grandmother calls me [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. I went by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] in high school and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] in college. One of the things I love most about my name is how versatile it can be. It’s a name you can grow up with and grow into.
Best of luck!
Most of the young Elizabeths I know ALWAYS go by their full names. A few go by [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f]/[name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]. I have also met one [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who goes by Liddy. I have literally never met anyone under 18 who goes by any other nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I am in the U.S. and my sense is, if you want to use the full name (and your daughter agrees), you can definitely make it happen.
I do think that [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] will end up with a nickname (from you and her friends), however, even if her friends call her [name_f]Liz[/name_f] at school you can still call her [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]) at home and would rarely ever hear [name_f]Liz[/name_f].
Thank you everyone for your comments, its helping clarify some of my concerns.
The reason I am brought it up is that our other daughter has a very short name which before 2 years of age she could perfectly say and I like that. I understand she will be an adult much longer than a child however. When my 1st daughter was born it was between her current short name and the name [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and we obviously went the other way. At the time I never had any concerns about length of names or potential nicknames or whatever but now after the experience of my first daughter I wonder if perhaps some of these considerations should be taken into account.
*Another option we have considered is Ellie as the name on the birth certificate. One of us feels that Ellie is a great nickname but not certain how it would translate to an older woman later on, while the other wonders if we will be using Ellie 90% of the time instead of Elizabeth then why go that route?
For the record our first daughter is [name_f]Eva[/name_f] and we’ve been debating between [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for the next one.
I think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is a way better choice than [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]; the latter has very little substance imo.
