Elizabeth or Eliza?

[name]Elizabeth[/name] is my great grandmother’s middle name. My grandmother always said that she wished she would have named one of her daughters [name]Elizabeth[/name] and called her [name]Beth[/name] which really made me fall in love with it even more. The nickname [name]Beth[/name] isn’t really my style but it is growing on me. I would probably use the nickname [name]Eliza[/name].

[name]Eliza[/name] would still be a great way to honour my great grandmother and her name would be the one I intend to call her if I used [name]Elizabeth[/name].

Which do you prefer? [name]Elizabeth[/name] with the nickname [name]Eliza[/name] or just [name]Eliza[/name]?

I prefer just [name]Eliza[/name].

I prefer just [name]Eliza[/name]. Its a lot more spunky than the very classic [name]Elizabeth[/name].
[name]Bree[/name]

I like just [name]Eliza[/name].

I am also a big fan of [name]Eliza[/name]… In fact, my second daughter is [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Morgan[/name]! She didn’t seem like an [name]Elizabeth[/name]. Also, my mom always loved the name [name]Elizabeth[/name], wanted to name me [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and call me [name]Beth[/name], but instead we had not one but two dogs over the years named [name]Beth[/name] when I was a kid… I guess I left the part that felt over-used to me behind. My [name]Eliza[/name] is spunky and gorgeous and funny, and I have no regrets on going straight to [name]Eliza[/name] over [name]Elizabeth[/name].

I would go with [name]Elizabeth[/name] nickname [name]Eliza[/name]. That way you get both the classic feel of [name]Elizabeth[/name] and the more modern spunk of [name]Eliza[/name]. Plus, it gives your daughter more options in the future for what name she wants to go by (Speaking as someone with a longer, classic full name and a shorter, less formal nickname, I’ve always been glad to have the option to go by either).

[name]Elizabeth[/name] is a beautiful classic, but [name]Eliza[/name] has so much modern spunk!

I think [name]Eliza[/name] stands beautifully on its own, and I would pick [name]Eliza[/name] over [name]Elizabeth[/name] (especially if I intended to call [name]Elizabeth[/name] “[name]Eliza[/name]” anyway).

I would choose [name]Eliza[/name] myself.

Since [name]Elizabeth[/name] is the family name in your case I vote for that one. I think you can’t go wrong either way though (and [name]Eliza[/name] is 100% usable on its own [name]IMO[/name], although as has been said the nickname route gives you both the classic [name]Elizabeth[/name] and the more spunky [name]Eliza[/name]).

I like [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Eliza[/name]. But then I don’t really like [name]Eliza[/name]. And I like that [name]Elizabeth[/name] is more traditional and has so many nn possibilities. She may start out with [name]Eliza[/name], but can choose from many other nn’s should she not like [name]Eliza[/name] later.

I’m one who will almost always go for the longer version, because I seem to nickname everything by default. Like [name]William[/name] for instance. If liam is my ‘goal’ i better choose [name]William[/name] as a full name, because if [name]Liam[/name] is the official name, he’ll become a ‘[name]Lee[/name]’ in my house! Funny how i am that way. I’m the same for [name]Ellie[/name]. I better pick a longer name with that as a possible nickname, because [name]Ellie[/name] on its own would be automatically nicknamed [name]Elle[/name]!
So I personally would choose [name]Elizabeth[/name], but I do think [name]Eliza[/name] is fine/nice enough to stand on its own (i don’t feel that way with many shorter names, so that means a lot in my mind, lol).

I agree with [name]Pansy[/name] 100%. There are so many options with the full [name]Elizabeth[/name] and you get to call her [name]Eliza[/name] either way!

I prefer the name [name]Elizabeth[/name] with the nickname [name]Eliza[/name]. That way you have a nice traditional name, with a more modern version for a nickname. A great combination!

I prefer [name]Elizabeth[/name] - so many more options. But if you are sure you will call her [name]Eliza[/name] anyway, and if you don’t want her to end up with another nickname, then I would go with [name]Eliza[/name]. [name]Eliza[/name] sounds like a complete name to me, not too nicknamey.

I would go with [name]Eliza[/name], since you want to shorten [name]Elizabeth[/name] to [name]Eliza[/name] anyway. [name]Eliza[/name] feels like a full name to me, not just a nickname.

Two gorgeous names! Personally, I would go with [name]Eliza[/name]. It is a bit more uncommon. Because it is beautiful, there are tons of Elizabeths. Not so many Elizas.

You can’t go wrong with either name, but I prefer [name]Eliza[/name]. [name]Eliza[/name] is beautiful!

But I agree with previous posters, that you could always name her [name]Elizabeth[/name] and use the nickname [name]Eliza[/name].

Definitely [name]Elizabeth[/name], just like [name]Austen[/name]'s [name]Bennet[/name]. [name]Eliza[/name] by itself does not have the same level of class.

We just named our baby girl [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Rose[/name]. My hubby’s grandmothers were [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Rose[/name] and my great-grandmother and great aunt were Elizabeths. So we liked that it’s a family name. However, for [name]Elizabeth[/name] I [name]LOVE[/name] the nn [name]Betsy[/name] and DH hates it- wanted [name]Lizzy[/name] which I hate. Decided to not argue about it and go with [name]Eliza[/name]. Still has family ties but is a little different and not quite as common (although getting to be). And personally I love the connection to [name]Eliza[/name] Doolittle in My Fair Lady- my first choice name was [name]Audrey[/name] (as in Hepburn) but DH’s brother had a baby girl named [name]Aubrie[/name] about 5 weeks before our girl arrived… Anyway, I’m partial to [name]Eliza[/name]!

[name]Both[/name] names are wonderful. It’s kind of tough to choose, but I’d go with [name]Elizabeth[/name].
