Elizabeth vs Isabella & nicknames

My husband and I are trying to choose a name for our daughter. We both love both the names…although I am leaning toward [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and he leans toward [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. What I love about [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is that it’s so classic and timeless. It can sound Victorian or very modern also…it’s biblical and literary. I also love [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. It is also classic, romantic, Victorian and has so much history behind! [name_m]Just[/name_m] a beautiful name…really both are and that’s our problem! Hubby likes [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] nn [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. I like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] but I don’t need a nickname. He would want the nn [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]. I would like to know what your opinions are between the two. Yes, I know that [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is very popular…putting aside, I’m asking just about the name itself, not it’s “trendiness”. Also, I am not a huge fan of the nicknames [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] or [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]…do you have any suggestions? For [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I like [name_f]Beth[/name_f], Bethy, [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Liza[/name_f], [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]…[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is harder. Bells/[name_f]Bella[/name_f] is ok but [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] seems more natural. I like [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as a nn, would that work? Ugh, decisions… Thanks for all your input! I appreciate it!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I love both [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], but I am with you in liking [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] just a little bit more! Nicknames can include: [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. For [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], I do like the nn [name_f]Ella[/name_f], but [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] is more of a natural nn.

[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is very overused, or maybe it is just far too popular for my taste. I think it is a very pretty name if I look at it objectively, but its popularity spike scared me away. However, if it is your only choice:
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] Nicknames:
[name_f]Izzie[/name_f], [name_f]Sally[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], Bizzie, [name_f]Bessie[/name_f]

I prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] over [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] for more than one reason. Although it is popular, it is not as popular as [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. There seem to be even more nn options for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] than [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is classically beautiful without the concern of trends.

[name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f], Eliet (elliott)

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u], [name_f]Elisa[/name_f], [name_f]Bizzy[/name_f] and probably a dozen more I don’t know of…

I adore [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but I cannot stand [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. There isn’t anything wrong with it, it just doesn’t win any points with me.

I know [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is an old name, but it’s so uber-popular right now, that I think it will date on Isabellas born today.

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] however, is a timeless classic, and won’t date.

Therefore, it won’t surprise you to learn, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] wins this one hands down for me. (Plus it has the better nickname options).

Popularity completely aside, I much prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. It’s funny, because the two names are similar in style and feel as well as sound (vowel, zuh, and the “be” in beth and bella. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] somehow seems a more well-rounded name to me, and I have always been partial to “el” names (so pretty) as well as the name [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. I think it is more capable of being grown-up/serious or girly/fun, whereas [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] stays more girly to me, although it is certainly a lovely name as well. I probably prefer [name_f]Isabel[/name_f].
I really love [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], because it is a popular name, and most of the [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]'s on the playground end up being [name_f]Bella[/name_f]'s. izzy is spunkier and more unique. I think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] would definitely work as a nickname as well.
My favorite nicknames for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] are [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. [name_f]Beth[/name_f] is so so so sweet and classic, and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is kinda fun and spunky. I don’t care for [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f] very much at all, but that’s just me-I never have liked it. [name_f]Liza[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] are just ok. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is absolutely adorable, but doesn’t seem wearable for an older girl (middle or high school), but then again, that what her full would name is for! Haha. There’s also [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], which are very vintage cute.

I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I find it to be the little black dress of names. Never out of style. Always perfect. Classic. Ageless. Timeless. An [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] could be 90 or she could be 9. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is very popular right now, and therefore seems more tied to little ones than to adults. However, it is still a gorgeous name. I slightly prefer [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], though.

Hmm…
[name_m]Both[/name_m] are gorgeous!! But I prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is lovely and if she wasn’t so popular I would choose [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. But I dislike the fact that when your [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is 50 people will know she’s 50 and will put her birth to around this time period. It will date her. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like most people assume people named [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] are 50+ because fifty or so years ago there were a craze of [name_f]Shirley[/name_f]'s born. If I was to use [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] I would worry that in 10 years time my daughter’s name felt boring and dated - she’d become the new [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] - and I wouldn’t want that. Whereas even though [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is popular, unlike [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] she hasn’t just spiked in popularity, she’s always been lingering around and always been a reliable name to go too. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has a regal sound, feels very classy, has a gorgeous history, and lovely connotations. I adore the range of nicknames surrounding [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] including the choice you’ll most likely use ‘[name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]’ but my favourites are [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is just a brilliant choice.

: )

My name is [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], nn [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] and everyone always automatically leaned towards calling me it even before I went by it on a permanent basis. I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] better though, and I agree with the other opinions of it wholeheartedly.

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is one of my favorites! She needs no nickname, but there are so many great options. I love [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is pretty, but I am soooo tired of hearing it.

I like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (prefer the [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] spelling, though), but I love [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. Or, rather, I love the idea of frilly, beautiful, [name_u]Austen[/name_u]-ian [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. It’s gorgeous, and frilly, and princessy, and I would love to have a little [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] in my life (except for the fact that it would essentially keep me from my beloved [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], which would be heart-wrenching on my end!). I feel like I like [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] so much because I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], though. My favorite nns for it are [name_f]Bella[/name_f] and [name_u]Issy[/name_u]/[name_u]Izzy[/name_u], but I think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is totally adorable, and usable. There’s also [name_u]Abby[/name_u], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Sable[/name_f], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], [name_u]Isa[/name_u], [name_f]Ibby[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], etc. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is gorgeous, though–I love the nns [name_f]Elise[/name_f]/[name_u]Elisee[/name_u] (a rare [name_m]French[/name_m] form of [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]–pronounced el-ee-say), [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lilibet[/name_f], [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], etc. I really love [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Lilibet[/name_f], and [name_f]Ella[/name_f]!

They are both beautiful names. I would pick [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] over [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], but might be swayed by [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. I just love the streamlined version; it sounds classy.
My favorite [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nicknames are [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Bette[/name_f]. I’m also not a fan of [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] or [name_f]Bella[/name_f]. Although [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] needs no nickname :).

My vote goes with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], both are gorgeous with lots of history (after all [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is a form of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. . .) but while I really like [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. If you went with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] your husband could still call her [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] if he wanted too or you could call her [name_f]Ella[/name_f] or you guys could pick another nn, there are plenty to choose from! Currently my favorite [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nicknames are [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elza[/name_f], but [name_f]Liza[/name_f] and [name_f]Betsy[/name_f] are awesome too
