[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone.
Lately I’ve been loving [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and I think the nickname [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is so cute. However, while it’s accepted for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] it is not overly common, and with [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], it is generally spelt with two Ls - like [name_f]Lilly[/name_f], which is slightly infuriating for me
Which do you think is better for the nickname [name_f]Lily[/name_f], spelt this way?
I think if you’d hope to call her by [name_f]Lily[/name_f], it doesn’t matter how you spell it, regardless of which full name you choose.
The [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I am named after went by [name_f]Lily[/name_f] / [name_f]Lil[/name_f]. I adore [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]! I’m pretty indifferent to [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], even if it is the more standard or popular long form of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a nickname.
That’s lovely! Would you say it’s used enough as a nickname to be accepted as such? I much prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] to [name_f]Lillian[/name_f].
I definitely think so! I, too, much prefer Elizabeth to Lillian, and I think people would catch onto the nickname very easily. Lily is a well-established nickname for many names (I’m thinking Liliana, Lilith, Tigerlily even, I’d suppose), and I think… Elizabeth is her best long form.
I’ve got a cousin Margaret who goes by Daisy, and she has to explain her nickname much more than I think an Elizabeth nicknamed Lily would. It’s intuitive, and it also happens to be similar to Libby and Lizzy sound-wise, which totally work in its ease-of-access favor! I’m all for it.
Yeah I prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] in this case.
I knew an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and she wore it well, however, [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] ‘Lily’ does feel more intuitive. I would probably spell [name_f]Lily[/name_f] that way, even with the double ‘L’ of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. (There’s always [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] too?)
i prefer [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a nn for it can definitely be spelled with just the one L. I like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] too.
Both names are gorgeous
[name_f]My[/name_f] paternal Grandma was [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] as a child but as she went into teenage hood this turned into [name_f]Liz[/name_f] as that was more intuitive for people. I think due to how popular [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is and how [name_f]Lily[/name_f] variants are used commonly it would more intuitive for a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] to be known as [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. Personally I would be surprised to find an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] known as ‘Lily’ so for me I would be more inclined to go with [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] to get that desired nickname. Regarding spelling of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] with either name I would use this spelling.
You can totally spell the nickname how ever you want regardless of the full name. A few people might assume a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Lily[/name_f] spells it with two Ls but its an easy correction and she’ll likely be introducing herself as [name_f]Lily[/name_f] most of the time anyways. I like both full names pretty equally. I’m leaning a little towards [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] because it feels a little more unexpected since [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has a been an extremely popular name for hundreds of years and an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has a billion other nicknames she might choose to go by later in life so if you want to ensure [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is the chosen nickname [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] might be the safer bet.
