Ellen nn Elle

[name]Hi[/name]! I really want to name my daughter [name]Ellen[/name] [name]Marie[/name] with the nickname [name]Elle[/name]. I was wondering if this was too close to my son’s middle name [name]Allen[/name]?

Thanks so much!

Personally, I wouldn’t do [name]Ellen[/name] and [name]Allen[/name], even if [name]Allen[/name] is just his middle name. I suppose since you won’t be saying “[name]Ellen[/name] and [name]Allen[/name]” outloud together…so it could work, but for me they’re a little too close for comfort. There are lots of girl’s names that you could use the nn [name]Elle[/name] for though:

[name]Ellis[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Elsie[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Giselle[/name]
[name]Danielle[/name]
[name]Michelle[/name]
[name]Delaney[/name]
Ellsion

We also considered [name]Elaine[/name] nn [name]Elle[/name].

I love the idea of [name]Ellen[/name] nn [name]Elle[/name] but not if her brother’s name is [name]Allen[/name]. Sorry!

I think this would be the better choice. You could also call her [name]Laine/name, which would be even farther from [name]Allen[/name]

If [name]Allen[/name] is her brother’s middle name, I don’t think it should be any trouble at all.

[name]Ellen[/name] is a fantastic name, by the way- I can’t believe how rarely it’s used these days! The two I know (one Canadian, one Danish) are two of the most brilliant women i’ve met (and are still lovely, friendly, down-to-earth people).

It all comes down to how often you use your son’s middle name. Personally, as much as I love [name]Ellen[/name], I wouldn’t do it in case your son decided to go by his middle one day, it would be very problematic.
