Elliot, Eliot?

My husband and I have both agreed we like the name [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. My husband, [name_m]Eli[/name_m], and I have a son named [name_m]Joel[/name_m]. I had suggested [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] for our first, but hubs wasn’t too keen on it, and has since warmed up to it.

Couple questions:

  1. [name_m]How[/name_m] does [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] sound/look together? Hubs wants [name_u]Elliot[/name_u].
  2. I was thinking we could go with the spelling [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] since hubby is [name_m]Eli[/name_m]…but would that be an insult to our first? Usually the first son would reflect more of Father’s name, right? And do you think [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] may be mispronounced?
  3. Does the name [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] seem feminine to anyone? The [name_f]Elli[/name_f] sound sort of rings out to me, but I still love it. Some girls have been named [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] recently too.

[name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

I would use [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. To me it’s a boy’s name. For some reason, [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] looks more feminine to me - maybe it reminds me of other girls’ names like [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], etc…

I love that name! My preferred spelling is [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] with two Ls and two Ts, but if I had to choose from the two you listed, definitely [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] with two Ls. The other, [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] looks like it would be pronounced EE-liot.

And definitely not too feminine! It can be used for a boy or a girl but the VAST majority are boys. It’s first a boy’s name. Some girls are also being named [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]Michael[/name_u], it just happens.

Definitely [name_u]Elliot[/name_u].

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]! I’ve never met an [name_u]Eliot[/name_u], only Elliots and Elliotts so I feel like [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] would get misspelled a lot

I prefer [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. I know a lot of families where the second son has an honor name for the father. I think with a lot of people, they use their first choice for their first boy, in case they don’t ever have a second son. Then when they end up with a second one, they use an honor name.

Definitely [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. It seems more complete to me.

I prefer [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. Also, I don’t see this being an insult to your first son unless you are making it a true honor name after your husband? A friend of mine has three daughters. They always said they’d name the first son after the father, but after deciding their third child was their last, they used the female version of one of his names for their third daughter. I doubt it’ll cause a major uproar to the other daughters. The meaning of one’s name is only as important as you stress it to be.

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is the more common spelling in the US so that is going to be the clear winner here. The only place where [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] is popular ATM (more popular than [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]) is [name_f]France[/name_f]. I prefer [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] to [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] personally. I’ve never liked the double L which always reminded me of the nickname “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” or something similar. So, to answer you question [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] actually reads more feminine to me than [name_u]Eliot[/name_u].

It’s a lovely name no matter which spelling you choose, however.

[name_u]Eliot[/name_u] looks like it is missing something. For this reason, I prefer [name_u]Elliot[/name_u].

I think they are fine together, they feel similar and definitely sound like they could be brothers. personally, I like the double L spelling. two t’s feel clunky and one L doesn’t look right, like its a different name. I could see it being said wrong.

I prefer the spelling [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] for the literary connections - [name_m]George[/name_m] [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] and T. S. [name_u]Eliot[/name_u].

I think [name_m]Joel[/name_m] & [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] would make a very handsome sibset, and it’s definitely not a problem to name your second son after his dad, at least where I come from.

My son’s name is [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u].
