I would like to hear honest opinions on why you think or do not think [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] makes a sweet girls name.
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is just a surname to me, but when used as a first name I prefer it on a boy. There are so many beautiful other [name_f]El[/name_f]- names just for girls.
I had a student who was a female [name_u]Eliot[/name_u]. Only spelled with one “l”. She was a darling , sweet, kind child.
I think [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is and adorable name for a girl but I’m not sure why I think it is.
Let’s turn this around.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] makes a sweet boy’s name? What about [name_f]Ellen[/name_f]? After all, [name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] begin with the same two letters. The “en” ending is almost exclusively masculine. But I’m pretty sure that if I posted on NB announcing that I was going to name my son [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], people would treat it as a joke at best, an aberration at worst.
So how is naming a girl [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] any different?
To me, it’s a boy’s name and doesn’t sound remotely cute or girly on a girl.
To me it’s definitely a boys name.
I think [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is insanely cute for a boy. I can see why people would like it for a girl (the nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Elle[/name_f]) but to me it’s a boys name. My mom told me once she likes it for a girl, but I just can’t get on board.
It’s definitely a boys’ name to me. It doesn’t sound good on a girl at all, in my opinion.
I think it’s adorable on a girl! You could even add an “e” on the end to make it more feminine:Eliotte
Also, nickname [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]! [name_m]How[/name_m] cute is that.
So, wait, let me get this straight: adding ‘e’ to the end of any name automatically makes it feminine? I guess Petere, Thomase, and [name_m]Jacobe[/name_m] are all viable girl’s names, in that case.
And back to my earlier example…[name_f]Ellen[/name_f] shortens to [name_m]Lenny[/name_m], another vintage nickname. Does that make [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] a viable boy’s name?
It has a very masculine sound to me. Perhaps [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] would work instead. Although, I prefer [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] on a boy, I do think it works for a girl. The sound is so much softer.
Definitely a boy’s name. I can’t even imagine it on a girl.
Is no name safe from becoming team pink? Is there not enough wonderful female names ? Let alone that begin with [name_f]El[/name_f]???
No, please no. I could list tons of great E names for girls that are GIRL NAMES. I’m sorry, but traditional male names should be left to the boys. But if you really have to use it, please don’t spell it Elliette.
I think [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is adorable for a girl, with the built-in nickname [name_f]Elli[/name_f] which is nice. I don’t get why people are so committed to names being one way or another in terms of gender. There is a long (growing) list of gender-neutral names that work for people. I can’t see why [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] can’t be one of them… it’s not distinctly masculine or feminine.
Of course… it’s just [name_m]Allen[/name_m] with an E
I dislike it on a girl. To me, [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is a boys name. When I think of someone named [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], I think of a 19 century hero roaming some English estate. When there are already so many girls names that give the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] ([name_f]Elanor[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f]), I feel that [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] should be left to the boys.
And @augusta_lee makes an excellent point.
I don’t think [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] (or any variant spelling) makes a sweet girls name. [name_f]Nor[/name_f] do i think [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] or [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] makes a sweet boy’s name.
If you disagree with my first sentence i fully expect you to disagree to the second sentence as well.
I love [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] on a boy, on a girl I would prefer more traditionally feminine [name_f]El[/name_f]- names like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], or -ette names if that the part of the name you prefer, or a -lotte name like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] would be a gorgeous name. Maybe you like the sound of that since it contains similar sounds to [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]?
