As someone who is a fan of “grandparent” names that haven’t become overly popular yet with the vintage trend, I’ve found myself coming back to a few of these names, but can’t decide if I could picture actually using them on a child or if I really love the sound of them.
I dig Velma, but for some reason it doesn’t sound awesome said out loud?
Not sure if I love or just like Thelma? I think I really like it?
I LOVE the name Elmer for a boy, but it does remind me of school glue and Elmer Fudd. I don’t know why I hadn’t really consider Elma for a girl before, but I think I slightly prefer the sound of it to the other options? I really like the name Alma, but it always makes my brain think of Almond milk , and there is a place near us named Alma. Elma avoids the location (and almond:crazy_face:) association but retains some of the charm. Might sound to similar to Elmo though?
What are your thoughts? Do you find any of them usable? Any favorites or definite no’s? Any strong vibes for any of them or how you would picture a little Elma, Velma, Thelma today?
PS, you guys have me great feedback on my last girls post… weeks… ago. Going to finally get back to that one! Thank you!

I haven’t considered [name_f]Elma[/name_f] before, but I like it! I think since is shares the [name_f]El[/name_f]- beginning with other vintage/classic names (Elizabeth, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] etc.) it feels more wearable to me than [name_f]Velma[/name_f] and [name_f]Thelma[/name_f]. I still associate [name_f]Velma[/name_f] with [name_m]Scooby[/name_m] Doo, though I do think the “V” looks cool. [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] feels the most clunky to me, though I’m not sure I can explain why lol.
I think generally Elma/Velma/Thelma give similar sweater-wearing, bespecled vibes. I feel like [name_f]Elma[/name_f] is more of an artsy child who writes stories, whereas [name_f]Velma[/name_f] and [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] are in the library reading.
I love [name_f]Elma[/name_f]. She sounds so naturey, via the association with elm trees, I suppose. [name_f]Elma[/name_f] is more gentle than [name_f]Velma[/name_f] and less clunky than [name_f]Thelma[/name_f]. She’s rising to the top with these three.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] is my favourite out of these three, but I’m not a huge fan of any of them. I knew a lady named [name_f]Delma[/name_f] once, which I prefer over these, but it’s still not my favourite.
Of your middle name options the ones I like most are: [name_f]Elma[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], [name_f]Elma[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Velma[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], and [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
I quite like [name_f]Elma[/name_f] - gentle and warm but with that clunkiness of [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] and [name_f]Doris[/name_f]. I think its similarity to [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], and [name_f]Alma[/name_f] makes it feel very wearable.
[name_f]Velma[/name_f] is kind of clunky cool - the [name_m]Scooby[/name_m] Doo association is strong to me - and I admit I do go back and forth on whether I like the ‘velm’ sound or not.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] I find easier to say and I like the softer quality it has while still feeling strong and substantial. I am endeared more to this than [name_f]Velma[/name_f]. (but then, it was my great. nan’s name so that could just be I’m more familiar/attached to it in that way )
[name_f]Elma[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] is getting my vote I feel like you don’t run into many Elmas or Velmas (not that I don’t love the rarity, I do, believe me) but I feel like when it comes to older more vintage names, you have to be a little careful with what you choose. Of course at the end of the day it’s your decision
