Elodie

I am in love with the name [name]Elodie[/name] for our baby girl. My husband thinks it sounds made up and that she is going to spend her whole life explaining that her name isn’t [name]Melody[/name]. I can see his point but wonder how much of a problem you all think it really is. I’d love to try it out on people but I don’t like discussing names with family lest I get a lot of unwanted opinions. Thanks!

I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. I definitely don’t think it sounds made up. Historically there was a St. [name]Elodie[/name], and more recently there is a French actress by this name and there’s been a character on an MTV show (The Hills?) named [name]Elodie[/name]. [name]Melody[/name] isn’t that popular these days, and people are naming their children more unusual choices anyway. She might have to spell it occasionally for people who aren’t familiar with it, but I don’t think it’s going to be a headache at all.

I love it and think that the nickname [name]Edie[/name] works from it, which I also love. [name]Love[/name], love, love.

[name]Love[/name] it!! So pretty!! I wouldn’t be worried about explaining anything… some may ask, is it “[name]Melody[/name]” you just say nope, it’s [name]Elodie[/name] =0)

She’ll probably have to explain and correct people fairly frequently, but it’s not hard to read or pronounce based on the spelling. It’s a lovely name that seems worth the occasional inconvenience!

This is one of my favorite names! I also don’t think it will be a problem.

I think [name]Elodie[/name] is a lot more recognisable these days, and [name]Melody[/name] isn’t particularly common so I don’t think there will be much issue.

[name]Elodie[/name] is the name we have settled on for our baby girl arriving in [name]May[/name] So I obviously love the name! I thought about the whole [name]Melody[/name] thing too and can here myself having to say a few times in her life “Its like [name]Melody[/name] but without the M” but im fine with that b/c I love the name (we also havent told anyone for your same reasons.)

We will also use the nn [name]Elle[/name] for her.

I sort of agree with your husband, [name]Elodie[/name] (or Élodie) seems like a French name that should be easy to pronounce but I think people will just say it like [name]Melody[/name] without the M. If people can’t pronounce it with the “ay” type sound (and even “ay low dee” doesnt sound quite right imo, maybe “eh y loh dee or ey loh dee”) I think it loses it’s charm. :frowning:

Heres an audio link since my description wasnt that great Élodie Bouchez pronunciation: How to pronounce Élodie Bouchez in French

I agree with this. I adore [name]Elodie[/name]! I think you should use it.

Except its not the same unless this is like Eulalie and Ottilie which apparently have English pronunciation that are different? I only know this as a French name (like used in France, not just origins) and am confused on whether or not there is now a proper accepted way to pronounce it here in the states.

If so how do people say it here? I say it like the link I listed above or “ey lo dee” is the best way to describe it. Maybe Im wrong and its Melody without an M?

I feel like anyone in the US who sees the name written down will pronouce it [name]El[/name]-oh-dee like [name]Melody[/name] with no M, and I actually like the pronunciation. Without the accent on the E there is no indication it is pronounced Ay-lo-dee. But perhaps I’m wrong? Thoughts?

I don’t think the accent makes a big difference I’ve known elodies with and without it and they’re pronounced the same, sort of like “ey loh dee”

I had the name [name]Elodie[/name] on my list too! But my husband said the same thing, “too much like [name]Melody[/name] with a missing M!”. [name]Even[/name] though the men seem to think that way, I think it is beautiful and not something you see everyday! I believe most people will recognize it and have no problem with it as [name]Elodie[/name] all on its own!

A friend of mine used this and so far hasn’t been experiencing any unbearable difficulties. I think with the explosion of all [name]El[/name]- names there is going to be at least a small surge of Elodies, so, yeah, it seems like it won’t be that weird.
