[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, first post here (although I’ve been on Nameberry for years). I’m going CRAZY trying to decide on a name for my first DD, I’m due [name_u]November[/name_u] 6th. DH and I are both stuck.
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] has been our name for years, we just love it (NOT a nickname for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]–its own name, the [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]). It’s adorable for a baby or a little girl but is sophisticated enough to grow with her into adulthood. However, I’ve read on other forums that people think of it as a nn, or that it seems more like a child’s name.
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] came to us a few years ago. I’ve long wanted to use [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] to honor my grandma, but didn’t love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] as much. I’m a huge fan of the TV show Lost, so when I “met” a character named [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]/[name_u]Eloise[/name_u], I loved it! We love the elegance of [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and the cuteness of [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], and that our DD will have several names to choose from (including [name_f]Elle[/name_f]). But I wonder if [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is too formal or fancy sounding…does it sound stuck up?
My main questions–is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] too cutesy? And is [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] too fancy (DD would be [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] most of the time but I do want to use [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] too). [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] seems more natural to me because I know several Sophies and DH and I have liked it for longer…but [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] seems like a better choice because of its versatility and the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is super cute, plus it honors my grandma.
The middle name for either is [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] if that helps (non-negotiable).
This is a long-awaited baby (we went through infertility) and I want her to have the perfect name…please help!!!
I prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] over [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. I don’t think it sounds too childish. As you said, it works on both children and adults.
I know adults and children named [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and the name suits them both. I don’t think it’s too cutesy, but the name is very popular where I live.
I prefer the name [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. I know a young [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and her name didn’t seem too fancy. I like all the nickname options the name offers ([name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_u]Lou[/name_u] [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Lola[/name_f]), although the [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] I know had a family nickname that wasn’t based on her name at all.
To be honest I find [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] to both be a bit cutesy sounding. I prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] because it seems like a more elegant name to me, but it is very popular (I know over 5 Sophies, all with different ages). Also, [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] flows better than [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] in my opinion… So if I had to choose it would probably be [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] nn [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. However, I’ve heard that it’s always a good idea to go in with two names in mind and then decide when you meet her?
I don’t think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] sounds too ‘cutesy’, nor do I think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] sounds too ‘fancy’.
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f], while very common nowadays, is quite a nice name, and I don’t tend to think of it as a nickname at all. That said, [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is very common nickname, and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] rising on the popularity charts too (well, here in Australia at least), so I imagine popularity and ubiquity isn’t so much an issue for you. I feel like while [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] & [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] have a very soft and gentle sound, somehow they feel quite different, and I think it’d be a good idea to take both names with you when she’s born and see which of the two ‘fits’ her better.
Personally, of the two, I prefer [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], however, as I am not overly keen on the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (I do like [name_f]Elle[/name_f] a lot though), I prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] overall.
It sort of sounds like you prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] but are trying to talk yourself into [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] because objectively it would be perfect. Both [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] are lovely names. If you don’t mind a second middle name, maybe you could do [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] or [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Elle[/name_f] to still honor [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]?
I love both names, they are both favourites of mine. Definitely not too cutesy or stuck up in my opinion. Given the middle name will be [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], I think I slightly prefer [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], but both are gorgeous
it sounds as though you have loved the name [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] for a long time and pictured your child with this name. It would be madness to name her anything else. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is a gorgeous name and I have 2 adult friends with the name and they both love it.
My daughter is named [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] but we call her lysie to get away from the [name_f]El[/name_f] nn.
Congratulations on your little girl!!! Both are wonderful names that sounds joyous, warm, and sweet. Your daughter will certainly encounter more Sophies going through life than Eloises, if classroom popularity is a concern for you, though it seems like [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and [name_f]Louise[/name_f] are rapidly gaining steam. You can’t go wrong here.
You’ve liked [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] for longer because you’ve heard it so frequently over the past decade (maybe, I guess this depends on where you live. I just moved from Maryland to [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], so allllll the children I knew WERE a sea of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], [name_f]Livvy[/name_f], and [name_f]Addie[/name_f], and now they’re all [name_u]Paisley[/name_u], [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], [name_m]Maddox[/name_m], [name_u]Colby[/name_u], and PickupTruck)
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is not too fancy, it’s perfectly darling. It will stand out more than [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. I also agree with a previous poster that [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] has a very slight edge over [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f].
Both are truly beautiful names that will age kindly. You can keep both in your pocket and decide after you see her sweet face for the first time. Let her tell you who she is. Good luck to you and your family!
Both are great names and you can’t really go wrong with either one!
I slightly prefer [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] personally. I definitely don’t think it’s too fancy or stuck up sounding. I’ve always felt it had a spunky feel, maybe due to my association of it to the “[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] at the Plaza” children’s books, which I love. That said, I don’t think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is too cutesy or too much of a nickname. It definitely can stand on it’s own! Maybe just wait until she is born and see which name fits her best.
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] are both super adorable, but I prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. This is my name, and I think it is spunky with a hint of class. Also, [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] flows better than [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] in my opinion. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] I helped, and congratulations on your beautiful daughter, whatever her name may be!
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]: [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] doesn’t sound like a nickname to me. I think it is a name that ages well, [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] could work both on children and on adults. I prefer [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] over [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] but [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is a wonderful name. The only drawback is that [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] doesn’t sound good to me, since the middle name option is non-negotiable, I wouldn’t choose [name_f]Sophie[/name_f].
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]: I don’t like [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] as much as I like [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] but I think that using a name you like which honours a family member is more important. I don’t think that it’s fancy. [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] flows better in my opinion.
[name_m]Even[/name_m] if I prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] over [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], I would definitely choose [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] with the middle name [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], because it honours a family member. However, dreamingoffireflies is right. You can just have [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] in mind and decide when your daughter is born.
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
[name_f]Leonora[/name_f]
I love [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] together and I just love [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and the fact that it is open to so many nicknames! With that said, I can see you love [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] more. I agree that you should take both names with you when she is born but go with your gut feeling. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] doesn’t sound like a nickname to me and if that’s what you want your daughter called you should go with it!
I personally prefer [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] to [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is too cutesy, and I don’t think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is too pretentious.
However, if [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] has been your name for years, and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is comparatively new, I’d stick with [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. If you still want to honor your family, I’d use [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] in the middle. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u].
Both are very lovely names!
I really like [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. It’s different but I’d say classic. [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is a lovely nickname! It ages beautifully, is elegant and rolls off the tongue, and is nice and rare without being obscure and silly. A very beautiful name!
As much as I love [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], for me [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is just so, so gorgeous. It’s been probably in my top 5 girls’ names since I was around 6, when I was first introduced to a [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. I just love love love love love the name!!! It’s DEFINITELY not too cutesy, it’s adorable for a little girl and is then very graceful and elegant on a adult. It could suit a variety of females too. It’s just sooooo beautiful. A very strong contender for my first child… I absolutely adore this name!
Good luck - and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is a nice middle for both too.
P.S. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is so much prettier than [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]!
Both are beautiful options and you can’t go wrong. I personally prefer [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], but it looks like your heart has been set on [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] for a while. That being said, I think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is probably the name for you. No matter what you pick, you’ll have a beautiful name. Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
