Eloise

[name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I was little, I’ve known this to be el-oy-s, and everyone I’ve known to say this name, has said it that way. Now that I’ve joined Nameberry, I’m seeing things about it being said as el-oo-eez. ([name_f]Louise[/name_f] with an Eh sound out front). Which one’s the right way?

I say [name_f]El[/name_f]-oo-eez. Its one of my favourite names as its almost like a smoosh of my sisters middle name [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and my mums first name [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f].

[name_f]El[/name_f]-oo-eez. You say it like a “noise” with an “elle” sound instead of the “N”?

yes! oh my god, to think, for about 13 years, I’ve been saying it wrong and NO [name_f]ONE[/name_f]'s ever thought to correct me. well then.

I feel your pain. Turns out my mum wanted to call my sister [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] said [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] not actually [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] thats my experience she never corrected me until I blogged about it. Thanks Mum.

ugh, mums! Although, the conversation between my 14 year old sister and I just now;

me: “did you know, I’ve said [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] incorrectly for the past 13 years?”
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]: “you thought it was [name_f]El[/name_f]-oy-se?”
me: “yep”
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]: “you know the movies…[name_f]Eloise[/name_f], kid who lives in the Plaza?”
me: “yep…see, I never saw the name while I was hearing it, so I never really put two and two together, and no one’s ever corrected me”
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]:“…oops, sorry dude”

So, this entire time, [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]'s been letting me go about saying it the wrong way. My sister’s a lovely child.

My sisters 12 and despite me giving her the nickname [name_u]Dell[/name_u] [name_u]Bell[/name_u] she says I can’t use it, thanks [name_f]Adele[/name_f].

When i was talking to my mum about the [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] thing she said that she thought [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] was said mad-el-yn no mum its Mad-el-ine kind of happy a Madisons and a [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] put my mum of using it my poor sister would have had pronunciation issues her whole life.

Mine changed the pronunciation of my middle name. It’s [name_f]Alannah[/name_f] and the Irish/traditional pronunciation is [name_m]Al[/name_m]-LAN-ah. My mother went for the English/Scottish pronunciation (aka the lesser known), which is [name_m]Al[/name_m]-ON-ah. As a kid, I had a medical alert bracelet due to an allergy, and teachers would always look at it to remember what I was allergic to, and, as soon as they saw [name_f]Alannah[/name_f], they went for the Irish way.

[name_u]Lucky[/name_u] for me, now [name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_u]Boo[/name_u] [name_u]Boo[/name_u], the adorable, and famous pageant girl, is well known, (her name is [name_f]Alana[/name_f], pronounced the way my mum says my middle name), I just go ‘it’s [name_m]Al[/name_m]-on-nah, just think of [name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_u]Boo[/name_u] [name_u]Boo[/name_u].’ Worked so far!

I watched the [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] at the Plaza movies about a decade ago so that is the only reason I learned this name or how to pronounce it.
They said [name_f]Elle[/name_f]-oo-eez

My cousin’s name is [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]; pronounced [name_f]Ell[/name_f]-oh-weez
I think it’s a gorgeous name!
