Elowen, Rowan and Arwen

Thinking about these three lovely names today. I love the wen sound they all share. Any thoughts or impressions you can share? Which is your favorite?

Thanks!

I love them. [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is my favourite. I think [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] ans [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] are the nicer of the three - very sweet sounding and feminine. The only [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] I know is a guy, so I find it a little hard imagine it on a little girl.

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - it’s a boy name. Yes, I am aware that it’s recently be claimed as a ‘unisex’ choice, but that doesn’t alter the fact that its roots are male and, with the legitimate feminine version, [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], ready and waiting to be used, I have a very hard time accepting [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] as a viable choice for girls.

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] - beautiful, but everyone is pronouncing it incorrectly. As a Welsh word name, it is correctly said as “eh-LOH-en”, not ‘ello-win’. Still, it is quite a lovely name, but I fear it is becoming quite a trendy choice and will soon be deadly popular.

[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] - definitely my favourite. Easy to pronounce, a gorgeous namesake ([name_f]Arwen[/name_f] Evenstar). It’s fresh and elegant, irrevocably feminine and completely neglected in terms of usage. Which is a bit of a shame since I’d personally love to see a few Arwens running around.

I like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] the best. To me, it is green, pink and taupe, dainty, soft and elegant, like a little fairy in a flower crown and a tulle skirt.

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is my favorite, as well as the one I’d most likely consider for an actual daughter. Being such an LOTR fan, I adore [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], too! [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is sweet, but it is unisex, so I consider it a bit less feminine.

[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] is beautiful too. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and Areen both have a stronger sound to me while [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] sounds more dainty. [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] does get mentioned here quite a bit. I think it has what I would consider a cult following. I think it will get more popular but I can’t see it being in the top 100. I think it’s a little too quirky or unique for most. I think the LOTR may keep parents from using [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] but I love the association myself.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] your description. Beautiful imagery

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] - My least favorite of the three. It’s a pretty name and I understand why it’s popular here, but for some reason it doesn’t appeal to me.

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - Spunky and feisty. I do prefer the spelling [name_u]Rowen[/name_u] for a girl, as it is reminiscent of other Welsh feminine endings, and of the magnificent [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] <3 It’s a lovely name and my favorite of the three (today).

Arwen - Gorgeous. I love that Tolkien (seemingly) created it using Welsh roots. It’s alluring but strong. One thing that ever so slightly bothers me is that the Ar- prefix reminds me of several masculine names.

When I see [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] I want to put the stress on the first syllable, which is not correct. So it confuses me a bit and I’d never heard of it before nameberry. It’s nice. I like the Welsh vibe.

I much prefer [name_f]Anwen[/name_f] to [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]. “real” name vs. “Tolkien fangirl”

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - It sounds nice. I prefer more decidedly feminine names.

I agree with you - ‘wen’ names are gorgeous! I didn’t really realise until quite recently how unusual they are. My grandma is called ‘Wenna’ so I’m quite familiar with the sound.

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] - pretty, but not personally appealing to me. I can see why people here love it though, and seeing Welsh names gain popularity is great!

[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u], love, love it. I’m a huge Tolkien fan but again wouldn’t personally use it because I have a great-uncle called Arwyn (my gran’s brother - the great-grandparents clearly has a theme!)

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - I’m growing to love this name. Until about five years ago I thought this was a girls name (I went to school with a lovely girl called [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]/[name_u]Rowen[/name_u] (not totally sure how she spelled it)), no idea it was unisex until a teacher of mine used it for her son.

I love [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and it was on the long list for my darling until someone mentioned to me that it sounded like alone with a w. I still love the name but can’t unhear the resemblance. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is super sweet for a girl and I like it a lot! [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is SO FLIPPING CUTE! It reminds me too much of [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] from Suite Life on Deck but it is so so cute and [name_u]Ari[/name_u] and [name_u]Wren[/name_u] both make the cutest nicknames

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is my favourite.

I love them but I feel they are too made up for a real human so I personally wouldn’t be brave enough. I do think elowen is lovely

Not crazy about [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], but I like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] slightly more, though I do prefer [name_f]Anwen[/name_f], or even better: [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f]!

I like the -wen ending; it feels strong, mysterious and refreshingly different in the age of -a and -ee.

My favorites are [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. I have loved the name [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] for years. The only [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] I know is a girl, so I was surprised to learn on nameberry that it’s originally a boy’s names. I do like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] but I immediately think of LOTR. Also, to me it is the least appealing sound-wise.

The names remind me of others I like: [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f], [name_f]Anwen[/name_f], and [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]!
I have no opinion about [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], and I prefer [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] on a boy.

What about:
Ariawenn
Lilwenn
Maiwenn
[name_f]Arianell[/name_f]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
Elwenn - Elwyne

@handsallover described my feelings about [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] perfectly. I do have to agree with PP that while [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is a beautiful name, it is very connected to [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] Evenstar and as long as you are a LotR fan and/or fine with people assuming you are, it should be fine.

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]/[name_u]Rowen[/name_u] is all male to me.

My favorite is [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], even though I know a lot people dislike it because it’s a “boy’s name”. My second favorite would have to be [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], although [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is also pretty.

Since we’re talking about [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] (beautiful name), might I suggest [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]? Another LOTR name, but it sounds like the perfect blend between [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] to me. Plus her character was a beautiful princess who ran into battle and destroyed the Nazgul(?) and avenged her father, pretty bad a** name imo.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is pretty, but it does sound a bit more ‘masculine’ which is not necessarily a negative thing; just a different feel than [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f].

double post so sorry!
