Elowen?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] again Berries!
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce this name? I find myself saying el-oh-win. I know the meaning is “elm tree”, which I find darling. Also any nicknames possible for this name, beside [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]?
Thank you!

I’ve always heard eel-oh-win.
A nickname could be [name_f]Lolo[/name_f].

[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]? I say EH-lo-win which sort of turns into an “ooh” sound in the middle. This name is on my list

The correct pronunciation is el-O-ən, which rhymes with [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. Emphasis on the middle syllable. The ending definitely isn’t ‘win’ so [name_u]Win[/name_u]/[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is a bit of a stretch- imagine calling a [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] ‘[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]’ for short. [name_f]Elle[/name_f], Ello or Low could also be nicknames.

Thanks all! I’m still confused about pronunciation but I guess it depends on where you live or? Thanks for the nickname ideas!

I say [name_f]Elle[/name_f]-oh-when. It’s a very pretty name. I prefer [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] as a nn.

It’s a Cornish word and that’s the Cornish pronunciation. It shouldn’t have anything to do with area. Pronouncing it differently would be similar to someone taking an English word name like ‘[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]’ and pronoucning it mag-no-LIE-uh. Wrong, in other words. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh but I’m not that keen on people nicking words from other languages and doing what they want with them.

That’s interesting… It was was on my list, but I always thought it was [name_f]ELLE[/name_f]-o-when… Not el-O-an.
Not sure I like it as much now! (sounds like you’re kinda/sorta saying [name_u]Owen[/name_u] with ‘el’ in front of it.) bummer because [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] pronounced the way I thought it was, was kinda cute. :-/

Um, thank you. I was just trying to find the correct pronunciation. Honestly, though, I’ve only heard el-oh-win. So everyone I heard say must be pronouncing it wrong. I’ll try to pronounce it correctly if I use it. Take care

I know, me too :frowning: But maybe it’ll grow on me or you after hearing it.

Yes. This is how we pronounce our daughter’s name, and we call her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] on occasion but mostly [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] since it is such a beautiful name. We are in the U.S. and that pronunciation works best for us. In Cornwall it would be incorrect, but there are lots of names pronounced differently in different areas. The Spanish [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], the [name_m]German[/name_m] [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], the floral name [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] all have different pronunciations. [name_m]Even[/name_m] our first daughter’s name, [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] has different pronounciations! I love the name [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and it’s meaning and origin. It fits our daughter wonderfully!

could be [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], etc.

Or I suppose Wen or [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] or [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Eluned[/name_f], though it is pronounced strangely.

I say it “[name_f]El[/name_f]-oh-wen” I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] IT! Lo or [name_f]Lolo[/name_f]… although I think [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] are adorable.

It’s a Cornish name and in Cornish the emphasis falls on the penultimate syllable. Thus it’s “eh LOW en” and not “[name_f]ELL[/name_f] oh wen.” It could be a bit of a stumbling block in English speaking countries, but not an insurmountable problem.

I’ve always pronounced it Eh-low-en
