Definitely not.
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is it’s own standalone name, [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] is also a standalone choice. I’m really against the thought of using a perfectly acceptable standalone name (ie; a flower name, or a variant of a name/[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]), not to mention, all they share is a meaning, so to anyone who doesn’t know the meanings - it would look a bit ridiculous. It’s a bit like taking the name [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] and shortening it to [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
While I appreciate your stance, your tone was a tad off, it was merely a question. Primarily, because I’d noticed both being brought up quite frequently on Nameberry, I never said or implied I’d use it either. Especially since I have a close cousin named [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. However, they do share virtually the same letters, so while it may not appear ideal or even a stretch, I doubt it truly deems “Ridiculous.”
You asked for opinions, so forgive me for giving mine. [name_f]My[/name_f] tone was not off, its an opinion. Something you asked for. Its too much like a word scramble for me to make sense, there fore IN [name_f]MY[/name_f] OPINION it seems ridiculous.
I think [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] for [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] is a stretch. The letters for [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] are in [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] but I think it’s the fact that they’re out of order that makes it not work for me.
I agree with [name_u]Haley[/name_u].
Yes, I did ask the opinion of those on the board, I understand why you don’t like it and respect that point of view. However, I am respectful of your naming threads also. Of course you don’t have to like it, as you said it’s your opinion, I just didn’t understand why the suggestion was met with such a disgruntled tone. Which I’ll admit could be the result of reading things on the internet, versus hearing them first-hand. Thank you for clarifying what you meant with “Word scramble” and thank you for commenting.
It might be a bit of a stretch, but I do think it could work if you really wanted it to! The sounds aren’t too off, all the letters are there, and they do share the same meaning. People up here make a big deal over nicknames, but they really aren’t that serious. They don’t have to be exact. I’m a big fan of [name_f]Lux[/name_f] and I also love it as a nickname for [name_f]Luciana[/name_f]. That might not make sense to someone who doesn’t know that they have the same meaning, but I love it! If I ever used the name or met a [name_f]Luciana[/name_f] I would call her [name_f]Lux[/name_f] for short, at least 40% of the time.
I agree with [name_u]Haley[/name_u] here - I’d definitely stick to one or the other.
There’s loads of really sweet nns for [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] anyway - [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], Sabby - and the wonderful [name_f]Ibby[/name_f].
Doesn’t really work for me either, though I think both are really pretty names on their own!
This is a good question, albeit one that I never thought of, as [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] are my favorite [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] variants.
I think if you really want to make it work, it could work but it would be a massive stretch. Despite being a stretch, the reason I think it can work is because quite frankly many nicknames do not make sense to me but people still use them anyway. If you want to nickname your kid [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] as the names are related and all the letters are there, why not? Go ahead.
Personally I’d much rather see [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] than [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] in a sibset together. They are distinct names, but as they are variants of each other I personally wouldn’t want to see them in the same sibset. To me, it’s the same as having [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] as siblings.
I would never connect [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] they are streets apart but with nn’s anything goes so it would be up to you.
I don’t see it myself but who cares, with nn’s anything goes! It’s entirely down to the family.
Since [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] contains all of the letters of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], I don’t see any big issue about choosing it as a nickname. Yes, both are standalone names but [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] works as a nn for [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and its variant [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f].
I think it’s odd, for sure. I like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] but I tend to hate the nicknames for it. I would opt for [name_f]Ilsa[/name_f] (not that that’s a name but with nicknames that doesn’t matter), which I think would work better, since it’s closer to the original [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and has almost the same sound as [name_f]Elsa[/name_f].
