Elsa

Hello,

I really love the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], but it is the same name as the main character on Frozen and we all know how popular that movie was (and is). I am wondering at what point do you think it is “safe” to use names that are popular due to celebrity/books/movies/etc without being attached to the child forever. At what point would [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] just become a beautiful name and not “like the girl from Frozen”?

I’d say just go for it if you really love the name. To be honest, there’s always going to be the association - I have a friend named [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] for instance and even now she gets comments about the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character despite the fact she was born before the first book was even published.

Another option would be to use a similar name such as [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] or [name_f]Isla[/name_f].

I say if you really love the name, use it. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]'s popularity may rise due to the snow queen, but it’s not one person (or character) name. Names like [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f] or [name_f]Rapunzel[/name_f] are “too Disney”, for example, but [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a well-established, commonly used name even without Frozen. So just like many parents nane their daughters [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] or [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f], you can use [name_f]Elsa[/name_f].

I’ve been wondering the same. Many of the names that I like (not necessarily ones in my signature) are those of characters or celebrities and I often wonder how much time has to pass before those associations would drift away enough for someone to tease my kid about having the same name as so-and-so.

With [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], I think there is a small measure of cause for concern. The movie was uber popular. I’ve heard that there is a sequel coming out within the next few years, which would put the name in the spotlight again. If it wouldn’t bother you to have to repeat, “no, not after [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] from Frozen…we just really liked the name!” or you feel your child wouldn’t be bother by the association, then I say go for it. Who knows…sometimes, little kids think stuff like that is cool!
