[name_f]My[/name_f] husband announced he liked this yesterday. I started thinking about it and decided I am potentially in love with it. I would very much want to use [name_f]Betty[/name_f] as a day to day name and I am generally not keen on “forced” nn’s, should they just occur naturally? I would not want to use the name if [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]/[name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] would be used as a nn - as lovely as those names are I do know too many of them to want to use them. I can’t find much about the name - it occasionally pops up as a [name_m]German[/name_m] version of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], which would work wonderfully for me as I am half [name_m]German[/name_m] and my grandmother was named [name_f]Elisabeta[/name_f].
Would be sister to [name_m]Silas[/name_m].
Any thoughts Berries?
Thanks.
Elsabet sounds very old and dated to me, especially next to handsome [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. It will also have a rise in popularity due to Frozen-inspired names. I much prefer [name_f]Elisabeta[/name_f] if you want to honor your grandmother (and [name_f]Betty[/name_f] still works).
Elsabet looks misspelled to me. It looks like a bit made-up. I’d go with the classic [name_f]Elisabeta[/name_f] (or [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f]) to honor your grandmother. You can still call her [name_f]Betty[/name_f].
I’ve never heard of Elsabet and it looks a bit made-up to me as well. [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] is an actual Dutch/[name_m]German[/name_m] form of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] though, maybe you’d like that?
Or you could go for [name_f]Lilibeth[/name_f], that’s one of the sweetest forms of the name in my opinion.
I adore Elsabet, it’s so quirky and goes well with [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. But [name_m]German[/name_m] names are my favourite. I actually like [name_f]Beta[/name_f] as a nickname, like your grandma. [name_f]Betty[/name_f] definitely works though, as does [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
I kind of like Elsabet. I’ve never heard it before. It sounds kind a like [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] which I also like so it doesn’t surprise me that I like this. I think [name_f]Betty[/name_f] is an easy to get nickname for Elsabet, so you don’t have to worry about it being forced. And if you, your husband, and your son all call her [name_f]Betty[/name_f] everyone will too.
[name_m]Silas[/name_m] and Elsabet sound so cute together as siblings. I think they work perfectly.
I like it but, if you dislike [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] you never know what she will chose to go by in the future so its a posibility!
Thanks all. It is definitely not made up and it being so unusual that people have not heard of it doesn’t concern me, it does seem though that this spelling and also Elsebet are used, albeit rarely, in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u].
Thanks for the suggestions - I want to stay away from beth endings and as much as I adore [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] it doesn’t logically get me to [name_f]Betty[/name_f]…
I will keep pondering it, but for now I’m seriously considering it - further opinions more than welcome!
I like Elsabet a lot. It did not remind me of Frozen. [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was that it sounded very [name_m]German[/name_m]. As it turns out I was right. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and Elsabet go well together, [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. And [name_f]Betty[/name_f] is great. Best of all you come by this name through your family and heritage, so even if others think it’s a Frozen reference or a made up name, they are just wrong! I think you should go for it.
