Elsi

Hi all! As some of you know I try to have Amharic names on my list. In Ethiopia, Elsi is used both as a full name and a nickname (mainly for Elsabet). Elsabet is gorgeous but doesn’t really go with the other names on my list (Indie, Noa, Lulit, Fern).

What are your thoughts on Elsi in the US? Would people assume it is a trendy spelling of Elsi? I definitely prefer the Elsie spelling but would use the Elsi spelling to be more culturally accurate.

  • I would assume Elsi is a creative spelling
  • I wouldn’t assume Elsi is a creative spelling

I wouldn’t think it’s a creative spelling – on first sight, I actually assumed it was a [name_m]German[/name_m] or Scandinavian variant of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. I think it’s a lovely choice!

[name_f]My[/name_f] great-grandmother’s name was [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], the other was [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. I’m not even joking

On first sight, I would just think it’s a variation of [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], or a shortened version of a longer name. I think it’s lovely!

I’ve known an [name_f]Elsi[/name_f]! I think in her case it was a creative spelling, but I certainly wouldn’t assume that! It’s a lovely name and perfect for your list :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: (though Elsabet would be a gorgeous middle too)

I like it especially with [name_f]Lulit[/name_f] (which is gorgeous)
