Which do you prefer and why? My husband think [name]Elspeth[/name] sounds like somebody lisping ‘[name]Elizabeth[/name]’. I think it is pretty. Comments?
Is [name]Elspeth[/name] prettier than [name]Ailsa[/name]?

Is [name]Elspeth[/name] prettier than [name]Ailsa[/name]?
I love [name]Elspeth[/name].
[name]How[/name] do you pronounce [name]Ailsa[/name]? My instinct would be ALE-sa.
I agree with your husband. I’ve never liked the name because the pronunciation reminds me of a toddler who can’t quite say the name [name]Elizabeth[/name].
I’ve never heard [name]Ailsa[/name] before. [name]How[/name] do you pronounce it?
Yes, AIL-sah or ALE-sa, as you wrote.
[name]Ah[/name]! Interesting!
I love [name]Elspeth[/name] & find it very sophisticated…like [name]Ingrid[/name], [name]Sidonie[/name], [name]Simone[/name], [name]Bianca[/name], [name]Blanca[/name]- soft & elegant, jet set-ish, intelligent sounding imo. I knew one [name]Elspeth[/name] & she was a very well dressed older woman & a librarian. I don’t find it child-like or lispy at all. I like it miles above [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I like [name]Elisabetta[/name] & [name]Elspeth[/name] reminds me more of that. Good luck! I hope you convince your husband!
I love both! They’ve both been on my list since I was a kid, actually.
I’d use [name]Ailsa[/name] before I’d use [name]Elspeth[/name], but I think both are great.
I really like [name]Elspeth[/name]. It is probably because growing up the library had a librarian named [name]Elspeth[/name] and she was such a lovely lady and I loved going to the library- still do actually.
I’d go with [name]Elspeth[/name].
I adore -th ending girls names, [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Lilith[/name], [name]Judith[/name], etc. I find them refreshingly trim in a sea of -ana/-ella/-bella/-a names. [name]Elspeth[/name] reminds me of a sort of “pioneer strength” - a little bit old-fashioned buttoned boots, but not wishy-washy at all.
With that said, no offense, not digging on [name]Ailsa[/name]. Would prefer simple [name]Alice[/name], but I’m boring like that maybe.
I love [name]Elspeth[/name]. It’s something different from the usual [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Eliza[/name]. It is classy and refreshing.
I like [name]Elspeth[/name] too. And it’s not lisping ‘[name]Elizabeth[/name]’, it’s a variation.
I love [name]Elspeth[/name]. I knew a girl at uni with that name and she went by [name]Eppy[/name] as a nickname. So cute!
Interesting. I haven’t heard it before, but I like it.
I know an adorable [name]Elspeth[/name] so yes it does work here. We called her [name]El[/name] or Pep
Not liking [name]Ailsa[/name], [name]Elsa[/name] sounds better [name]IMO[/name]
I love [name]Elspeth[/name], does not sound lispy at all to me & the sound is very different from [name]Elisabeth[/name]! Seems very classy and intelligent, to me.
[name]Ailsa[/name] is nice, too, I used to know a sweet woman with the name. It gives off more of a spunky vibe than [name]Elspeth[/name], slightly less sophisticated.
[name]Elsa[/name] seems like an obvious suggestion for you, but I’m guessing you’ve ruled it out?
I actually know 2 adults with the name [name]Elspeth[/name], and they seem to get by alright. I’m honestly not a fan of the name though, I agree with PP’s who said it sounded lispy. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ailsa[/name] though, I’ve never understood why people have a hard time pronouncing it. It’s always seemed easy to me.
Never cared for [name]Elspeth[/name] and I will second the suggestion of [name]Elsa[/name].
I agree with your husband- [name]Elspeth[/name] does sound like someone with a lisp trying to say [name]Elizabeth[/name]. If you want an exotice [name]Elizabeth[/name] variation, [name]Lisette[/name] is beautiful, and Nameberry has a whole blog post on the [name]Elizabeth[/name] nicknames and names.
I like [name]Ailsa[/name], but I pronounce it like I’ll-suh
I love [name]Elspeth[/name]!
Loving [name]Elspeth[/name] at the moment- I love the fresh spin on [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I tihnk it’d be difficult in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name], but if you can look past it I say go for it.
Not caring for [name]Ailsa[/name], I’d say it as “Ail-Suh”. Something about it isn’t appealing to me.
I’d also like to suggest [name]Elsa[/name], it seems like the best of both worlds.
