Elspeth

I’ve always wanted to find a name that honors my grandmother, [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], but honestly, in itself, it’s a hard name to love. At the same time, I’ve been loving -eth names lately (without consciously making the [name_f]ETHel[/name_f] connection) and particularly [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]. It only just occurred to me that [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] could indeed work very well as a namesake for [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] (furthermore, [name_f]Ethel[/name_f]'s grandfather was Scottish). My partner’s mother’s name was [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] too, so that adds even more meaning.

What are your thoughts on [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]? Also, how do you feel about Freyja [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]?

I am not the biggest fan of [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], but it does have a unique charm about it that somehow makes me want to love it. It would be a great honour name for [name_f]Ethel[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Freja[/name_f] [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is just gorgeous actually. Very beautiful combination.

[name_f]Freja[/name_f] [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is lovely and a nice way to honour [name_f]Ethel[/name_f]!!

My daughters middle name is [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], so I am biased - but I think for you, it really is perfect due to how much honor it brings in one name. Freyja [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is stunning, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

Thank you for your reviews. [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] feels to have this great strong, old-world, elvish charm to it to me, which I like a lot (many -th ending names have that powerful and whimsical quality, I think).

Anyone else have any thoughts?

I adore [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]! It definitely does have that whimsical elfin vibe, while still feeling sweetly old-fashioned. I know a gorgeous little one, which helps (and it really does wear well).

It’s a clever honour name for [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], and I love it in combination with Freyja (though I might prefer the simpler, more streamlined [name_f]Freya[/name_f] here, personally). A big thumbs up from me!

I love [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] and I definitely think it makes a great honor name here!

I definitely concur on your feelings about -eth/-ith names. There’s something almost mystical feeling about them.

I think it’s lovely with [name_f]Freya[/name_f] and works beautifully to honor [name_f]Ethel[/name_f].

[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is whimsy and beautiful, a great way to honor [name_f]Ethel[/name_f]. I love it.

Another vote for [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]!

Freyja [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is beautiful! [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is not a favorite of mine and I read a book in which the name [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] was described as sounding like someone spitting hair out of their mouth, and now every time I see it that’s all I can think of. But with Freyja, I think it sounds beautiful.

The average person won’t say this, but the name snob in me doesn’t like the double vowels in between “ya” and “el”. Could just be my particular accent.
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] might be easier for people to spell.
I’m tempted to say [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] Freyja? Because I like the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
And the name Freyja is great. So is [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]. Go you.
