Elvira?

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the name [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] (pr. [name_f]Ell[/name_f]-vee-ra).
It’s not a name I’ve ever dreamed of liking but here I am.
Plus, it’s wasn’t a name that been growing on me for a longer time period but rather one I liked after looking at it twice.

I know there is a bad connection, which I didn’t know of until I looked the name up, and I wonder how many people actually know about it. Did you?

What are your thought on [name_f]Elvira[/name_f]?
Which middle and sibling names would you pair with [name_f]Elvira[/name_f]?

I pronounce the name [name_f]Ell[/name_f]-vee-ra and the spelling would not change.

[name_f]Ell[/name_f]-vy-ra, the goth woman with the huge boobs was my very first thought upon reading the title of this thread. I much prefer your pronunciation.

I love the name [name_f]Elvira[/name_f]; it is an elven name and reminds me of an elven princess. I am not familiar with any of the negative connotations associated with it.

I like [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Elvira[/name_f]!! It does have a vampire, Elf, or [name_m]Elvis[/name_m] feel. But also has a beautiful, elegant, classy feel. I didn’t know one name could have so many different feels to it. Such an interesting name!! I didn’t know the bad connection until I looked it up. Nn I could see if that is what you are into are [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Vira[/name_f] ([name_m]Veer[/name_m]-rah).

Madita
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]

I’ve never heard about her, so definitely not an association for me

The association is very strong to the goth woman, her real name is [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] [name_m]Peterson[/name_m]. And I immediately started singing this…

I personally could never take this name seriously. Sorry.

When I saw the name of this thread, my first thought was the “goth woman with huge boobs” (haha!). I don’t know that it’s a “bad” connotation, but it definitely feels like a one woman name to me. I would think the same would be true for most people, although this thread has me doubting that. I was born in the US just shortly after the movie came out (1988) so maybe it’s an age/location thing.

Also, in the movie it was pronounced el-vi-ra so you may have a bit of a fight combating that pronunciation.

I always think vampire when I see [name_f]Elvira[/name_f]. I get tongue twisty with the pronunciation, but it might just be me. [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] and [name_f]Leonor[/name_f] from your signature would work for siblings.

I really like [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], always have.

[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Leonor[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]

I can see [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and [name_u]August[/name_u] as potential siblings:)

Personally I really like [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], and have no strong connections to it. I actually really like [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] as a sibling name with just about every name in your signature. She fits your style perfectly!
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it is an American association or an english-speaking-part-of-the-world association?

I really like the combos of [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] and [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Leonor[/name_f]!

This is my great-grandmother’s name, with that same pronunciation. She was from [name_f]Italy[/name_f]. She was called [name_f]Vera[/name_f] mostly.

Here in the states it would likely get the [name_f]Ell[/name_f]-vy-ruh pronunciation with a strong association to the campy/sexy Halloween character. The name also has some usage among the Spanish speaking community, but I don’t know much about what country of origin or anything, I’ve just heard it a few times on kids.

I like the name and I think it has an elegant vibe, like [name_f]Viola[/name_f] or [name_f]Leonore[/name_f], kind of vintage with a bit of primness, maybe a teeny bit sinister even, but certainly beautiful. For me it is a woman’s name, not one I could imagine on a baby.

[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] is definitely not a baby’s name. I don’t think many on my girls list are though. They’re all names a child had to grow into (I can totally imagine a baby called [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], etc. but everything beyond that seems too much for an infant).
Interestingly enough, [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] is a popular name in Norway and [name_u]Sweden[/name_u], it’s in the top 100 and top 50 respectively, which really surprised me.

I love it! I am 100% in favour of names for girls to grow into - hopefully they’ll be women for a lot lot longer than they were babies!

[name_m]Even[/name_m] a Google search for just ‘[name_f]Elvira[/name_f]’ pulls up the goth woman automatically. I’m not trying to put you off the name at all, but you should be aware of this relatively strong connection. Since you don’t live in [name_u]America[/name_u] then it might not be a big deal (unless you plan on moving here in the future or something.) Also, I’ve come up with some combos.

[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Ofelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Violetta[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]

I don’t plan on living in [name_u]America[/name_u] however I do have plans to stay in several European countries over the years (that might not work out of course but one can dream, right?).
I thought it might be an American connotation since the name is quite popular in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u] and Norway.
I think the combos of [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are very lovely, thanks!

Really? That’s great to hear. What is your favourite sibling name for [name_f]Elvira[/name_f]?
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] is stunning. Thank You!

No one has mentioned the 80’s country song. That with the goth makes this name truly dreadful for me.

I adore [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] pronounced as you prefer, el-vera.

[name_f]Elvira[/name_f] said the other way is ugly.

I would name her [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] and correct mispronunciations. Many of us do this with our last names constantly and it is not the end of the world.
